  1. Insight 2050 has revised their population estimates for 2050 to 1 million new residents in the metro. The projection from 2010 to 2050 was 500,000 but we have already seen an increase of 150,000 since 2010. Check out the graph here: http://getinsight2050.org/ Shouldn't this info open up lenders' purses?
  2. That plaza is capped on two sides by large blank windowless walls and big blank windowless walls on either side of it on High as well. It is uninspiring and lacks any real creativity IMO even if it is an improvement. They could do much better than just "nice" or better than before, or worst of all, "it's ok-at least for Columbus. That mass of the convention center wall is a blank canvas waiting for something. Windows(even fake ones), art, murals, anything depicting the history of the city or what was once there (going along with the design reflecting the tracks), living green walls or planters embedded in some of those blocks, etc. Anything to break up the spaces more and humanize it a bit. If they did the artwork/etc right, that alone could possibly (a stretch here I will admit) make it a showpiece and something to be admired even. An endless parade of pastel trapezoids just does not cut it for me. It could be better than that-even if the streetscape along it has improved a bit. I've always liked the building and I do think the streetscape upgrades help enliven the street. My understanding is that punching windows into the walls would interfere with some of the functionality of the meeting rooms and back of house operations. I do agree that the overall design is inward focused and attention to the street would have helped. FWIW, this portion of the convention center came online in the early 1990's, not the 1980's.
  3. ^I think the new streetscape and redesigned "Arnold" plaza look nice along High St.
  4. Per the AIA - Architects: George J. Kontogiannis & Associates, Columbus http://archallenge.aiacolumbus.org/project/annunciation-greek-orthodox-cathedral/
  5. There was an older church on the site that faced Park St. That was replaced in 2008 or so. Had to be earlier than that; I've been here since 2006 and I don't remember it being built. The cathedral on High St. was built in the late 80s or early 90s. The original smaller church (which faced Park St) was torn down around 2008 and replaced with a larger building. You can see the change on google streetview.
  6. Well, all of that + Summit and 4th Streets infill. 4th St. is seeing more of the higher density development.
  7. Thant's a good question. On the north side I think 5th Ave. has potential from Neil Ave. heading east to 71.
  8. Those were public housing towers at 2nd and Summit. I think they were demolished around 2000 or so.
  9. There was an older church on the site that faced Park St. That was replaced in 2008 or so.
  10. ^^Yeah, thanks for the photos. Nice view from Rhodes! A lot has changed since I snapped this photo from the One Nation elevator in 1985
  11. Pics or it didn't happen. It's up and running.
  12. ^That's probably the final color. ^^^The view above will change dramatically when the 15 story building goes up at Rich and 4th.
  13. Interesting as I haven't heard anything about that. And what do they mean by "through COSI"? It makes it sound like it will be built through the building going from the Scioto to the new park, but that doesn't sound right. That would be quite an undertaking. The east side is 1 story higher than the west side. The connector would need a grand set of stairs, elevator and perhaps escalators. COSI would need to rework the ticket lobby to separate it from the connector.
  14. ^Looks like it was well received by the Commission. It will be back in 2 months for final approval. A few neighbors didn't like the parking garage extension blocking their views. I'll bet we'll here more of these complaints as Downtown continues to fill out. The building is 173' tall. https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2018/02/27/developer-of-proposed-15-story-tower-says-it-will.html
  15. ^^The Moxy crane installation is underway.
  16. I took a walk around Hubbard Park Place today. Crews are starting to install exterior finishes. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together. From the park. The tile looks nice. You can catch a glimpse of the brick veneer from Park St. View from High St.
  17. Foundation work is moving right along at the Pavey Square project. Tower crane base is installed and it looks like ALL is staging for tower crane installation - perhaps this week?
  18. I think it's interesting that the developer is from out-of-state. Our local developer's good old boy club is going to have a bit more competition. :)
  19. Is it truly a part of the Red Brick district when it's not constructed with red brick? :)

  22. I spoke to someone with knowledge of the Downtown Commission agenda for 2/27. There is a project proposed on E. Long near 6th (8 stories) and another at Town and 4th (15 stories). Interestingly, both are by out of state developers.
  23. FYI - The tower crane base has been installed in the basement of the Moxy Hotel site.
