  1. This. I wish Edwards had restored the Wellington and incorporated it into the 16th and High project. I like seeing older buildings mixed in with new. I can certainly understand why some call this the "Eastonification" of High St. - a mono culture of block sized projects that all look about the same. Demolition has begun on the block between 16th and 15th. The old Kinkos has been torn down along with apartments along 16th.
  2. I noticed the parking meters have been removed from the parking lot at 711 N. High. I wonder if construction is imminent?
  3. Day two of the crane installation - check out the three workers at the very tip of the partially assembled crane - you couldn't pay me enough to go up there....
  4. Tower crane being erected at Lane and High. My commute to work on High St. is a gauntlet of construction barriers (I'm not complaining). Maybe someday Columbus contractors will learn to build a structure without taking a lane.
  5. Cols. Commons was designed by EDGE, not MKSK. Correct. But MKSK (or MSI at the time) did the original plan, which was much stronger. It was a pretty picture not based in reality or budget. Their plan didn't take into account keeping the parking garage below fully functional. It would have been physically impossible to bring Town St. through the park as MSI suggested and keep the garage below as CDDC required and within the budget. I agree that the Carter project is awful.

  8. The Garden building replacement proposal - three options will be presented to the IV Commission tonight. “We want the building to appear transparent,” said James Brennan, Design Principal with the architecture firm Gresham, Smith and Partners. “Our client is committed to building a high quality building, which seems lacking in Columbus at the moment… making things look the same with new materials doesn’t usually create the desired aesthetic.” The three options: http://www.columbusunderground.com/three-options-for-replacing-short-north-building-to-be-presented-bw1
  9. The Yoga on High used to be a Kroger and the Dollar store was a Big Bear. Two groceries right next to each other. http://digital-collections.columbuslibrary.org/cdm/compoundobject/collection/ohio/id/18880/rec/5
  10. Five-Story Building Proposed for Yoga on High Site in Short North "A proposal to build a five-story mixed-use development on the current site of Yoga on High in the Short North was submitted to the city today. The plans, which will be reviewed by the Victorian Village Commission on February 9th, call for about 9,500 square feet of ground-floor retail with 116 apartments above. About 140 parking spaces would be provided in a parking garage with a both a first-floor and basement level." http://www.columbusunderground.com/five-story-building-proposed-for-yoga-on-high-site-in-short-north-bw1
  11. The building was being demolished when I drove by at 9:00AM.
  12. Owned by Casto. I've always thought that Giant Eagle strip mall is the last massive redevelopment site in the Short North, and it's also unique bc you can clearly get away with high-rise next to the Thurber Village and Neil/670 exit. The site is outside the Victorian Village Area Commission boundaries so the sky's the limit.
  13. The site is fenced off and cleared. Looks like construction will start soon.
  14. The Dollar Tree site has been fenced off for a month and utility work is underway. The buildings were demolished today.
  15. ^I've noticed preliminary site work for the second building for a couple of weeks now.
  16. I found this humorous: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2016/12/11/1-commentary-let-browns-pay-us-to-stink-up-city-park.html It is admirable that the Browns remain committed to learning how to play the game of football. But it is awfully presumptuous that they would think local taxpayers would be eager to underwrite even a portion of that Sisyphean effort.
  17. The White Castle project tower crane was erected over the weekend.

  20. Glad that this is moving forward but 5 story buildings with some free standing commercial seems weak and non-ambitious. Taller structures would take advantage of the view over COSI towards the Scioto Mile and downtown.
  21. Noticed a drill rig performing a subsurface investigation at Starr and High. Could this be the next suburban outparcel to bite the dust in the Short North? <iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1480603162375!6m8!1m7!1sC8_CPRpOAPuZcH37JlZSjw!2m2!1d39.9829337632378!2d-83.0047404428445!3f309.01015095581806!4f-6.64182482847734!5f0.7820865974627469" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0" style="border:0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  22. Well, this is unexpected: 8 story hotel proposed for 8th and High. http://www.columbusunderground.com/eight-story-hotel-proposed-for-eighth-and-high

  24. I commute to work on High St from Clintonville to the Arena District - there's a lot of activity to check out every day spanning several threads so I wasn't sure where to post this. What I saw today, north to south: Wellington: Sheet piling is in and excavation is underway for the lower level parking. 15th and High: Longs and Hennicks are long gone and the basements are being filled. Taco Bell: Closed for about 6 months now - wonder when this will move forward? 9th and High Rehab: This project is complete and looks great. Highline and Nine: The north and south ends have reached full height giving a real sense of how the scale of the street is changing. North Side Library: Coming together nicely - looks like the windows will be installed on the 2nd floor soon. I didn't realize the building had white brick - looks good. 7th and High: Dollar Tree and the laundry are gone, the site is fenced off awaiting demolition. Stonehenge 3rd and High: Footings are poured, should see something vertical soon. White Castle: Tower crane base is in and first level columns are being poured. Brunner Building: Basement foundations are poured, looks like it may go vertical soon. UDF 1st and High: Two drill rigs were working this morning performing subsurface investigations.
