  1. Isn't this effectively dead with the new administration?
  2. I drove that same route yesterday. For decades I've been used to the the one-way pairs. The two-way makes the city look new and different for this motorist since I've never experienced this vantage point from my car (of course I've walked over the years but this is a new experience). Kinda like when the two-way bike lane was installed on Summit - I was unfamiliar with the views heading north on my bike.
  3. I'll bet those are vents - dryers, bathrooms and kitchen exhaust.
  4. The renovation of the building, specifically the exterior wall panels, ultimately led to the quick deterioration of the original brick and there was no choice but to tear down the building. Covering up old brick buildings with panels in the 60s and 70s was a horrible idea. Some survived (northeast corner of 4th and Long) and some didn't. https://gilfillenarchitect.wordpress.com/marconi-building-renovated-offices-for-city-of-columbus-ohio/

This was passed to leverage federal funding in addition to the tax. Will any federal transit funding exist once Elon is done gutting the government?
  6. The southern 1/4 of that parking lot was the location of the Marconi Building. It started out as a shoe factory in 1913, then IRS offices and finally City offices. It was demolished in 1989. It's been a City owned parking lot ever since. https://digital-collections.columbuslibrary.org/digital/collection/p16802coll19/id/489
  7. I agree with the comment about commercial space along High. Also about the overall composition - it does look like three separate buildings, like a tiered cake. I don't know why they would ask for a shade study of comment on the height. That was taken out of the commissions hands by Zone-In. Per the Urban Core zoning in this area 12 stories are allowed - it can go to 16 with affordable units.
  8. There's a fence around the site - I imagine demo is on the horizon.

  10. Did someone mismeasure and locate the bridge abutment in the new roadway?
  11. Sinclair is such a dump from Morse to Lincoln. Any improvement is a plus.
  12. Might be. The formwork here is level compared to the ramping below.

  14. There's space for so much infill on E Main. Hope this type of development continues!
  15. I believe that's scheduled for 2025. It'll be interesting to see how the bike lanes work out.
  16. ^Gotta get it done before the asphalt plants close in November!

And that's unfortunate. University districts have so much to offer with shows, lectures, exhibitions that are often free to the public. Evanston IL is a great example. Yes, it's a college town but it's not the exclusive domain of college students. High St. used to be like that - maybe it can come back sometime. Why would anyone go there when it's just as easy to drive to Polaris or Stringtown Rd. Maybe it has to do with the size of OSU. The neighborhood is overwhelmingly home to students but there are pockets of owner/occupants.
  18. Yeah, I don't get the "traffic is a nightmare" comments. I guess if you have more than two cars at a traffic light it's a nightmare....

High and 18th in 1980 and 2024. The shops in 1980 were patronized by folks from all over the city. There was a dip in pedestrian traffic in the summer but it was never dead. Discount Records (where Qdoba is now) had one of the best classical music selections. Now, when OSU is on break, High St. is dead. Probably because there's nothing unique about the stores (with the exception of Buckeye Donuts which is always busy!).
  20. Meanwhile in Chicago....look how good the podium looks on this building. https://chicagoyimby.com/2024/10/plan-commission-approves-1200-w-fulton-street-in-fulton-market-district.html
  21. I thought this might be a good place to mark the passing of Curt Moody. A Columbus native who founded his firm in 1982, he grew it into the largest African American architectural firm in the country. Former Mayor Colman noted "Curt Moody was a great American architect, a good person, a visionary, and we have lost an icon in the minority business space and an icon in the architectural design space as well." On a personal note, I first met Curt in the mid 1990s as a young draftsman. He treated everyone in the room as equal collaborators all working together to produce a great product for the client. His personality permeated the culture of Moody Nolan and it is always a joy to work with them on a variety of projects throughout the years. https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2024/10/14/curt-moody-moody-nolan-inc-architecture-firm-dies/75678171007/ https://moodynolan.com/
  22. I drove through the airport a few days ago - lots of construction underway. Not the terminal, but all the enabling stuff that needs to be done before such a huge project gets underway. Lots of temporary roads being built, utility work, the McDonalds is demolished and gone, portions of the blue lot are closed and a massive parking lot is being constructed south of the red lot along Stelzer Rd. Just a precursor to what lies ahead!
  23. I love how the angle of the photo makes the city look so dense! All the surface parking lots in this area are hidden.
  24. I don't mind a hotel (I live in South Clintonville - I could see my out-of-town visitors using it) and now there's retail on the first floor. I just hope the gated parking gets shifted to the back.
