You can take a driverless taxi ride in many places - parts of China, San Francisco, Phoenix, I think Lyft or Ford started offering them in Miami. None of those rides will be in a Tesla, of course. But autonomous, driverless taxi rides do exist now.- Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering

DarkandStormy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI know a lot of Dispatch articles end up on a non-paywalled site (This Week News or something?) but here's a free one from Yahoo - https://news.yahoo.com/judge-dismisses-residents-appeal-over-174215135.html Emphasis mine. Also... This guy definitely has visited the census thread here, right? To the comments! A lot of amateur lawyers coming out of the woodwork. Now that it appears the units are going in, residents are suddenly concerned there will be no low income units. Sure, sure. Ah, now your opinion only counts if your yard will no longer receive sunlight because of The Whale going in. When they want it to serve them, those complaining ignore that the proposed plan is for 4.5 stories (often exaggerating to 5 or 6 stories). If someone chimes in who lives in Merion Village but agrees with them, that's ok. If they're from Merion Village but disagrees with them...suddenly, they can't have an opinion because they don't live close enough. Hope you enjoyed this comedy series. I redacted names because I guess technically they're not posting on a fully public site. EDIT - I present to you 3rd and Whittier, a mere couple blocks from The Whale. Note that there are *TWO* three-story buildings at this intersection, dwarfing the poor 2/2.5 story homes nearby, depriving their yards of sunlight. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.944333,-82.9944347,3a,75y,179.13h,94.81t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sKbNkl8M8xWtrVR85FEGJIQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en- Personal Finance / Investing Thread
I wouldn't advise anyone to invest with ARK. I don't think Cathie has any idea what she's doing. All of the ARK funds are down 50+% in the last year (S&P 500 is +5-6% in that time). There's a podcast interview from a couple interviews and basically she says she picks her stocks based on what Jesus tells her. https://www.getreligion.org/getreligion/2021/8/29/reporting-on-faith-based-investment-guru-cathie-wood-do-your-homework-better She essentially got lucky, riding the TSLA train for awhile. Now that TSLA isn't appreciating 500% every few months, her funds are doing hilariously bad. Weird...almost like a 60-year old didn't develop some new way to pick the best stocks and rather just got luck on a very large position.- 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
We use YoutubeTV, and wait about 30-40 minutes until after 8:00 to start watching. There's already a lot of fast-forwarding through the commercials, but we mostly skip the puff pieces as well. Feels like half the time could be cut.- 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
12+ million people a night in the U.S. are watching. Probably a few things... -China (some might be boycotting over human rights abuses and tuning it out entirely) -pandemic (a lot of sports TV ratings have been down the last couple years) -we just had the Summer Olympics ~7-8 months ago -Not sure how they do the ratings, but there are a lot more options to watch now - Peacock (which has only been around a few years), YouTubeTV, various streaming apps, etc. -The sports in Winter Olympics in general are much more niche and don't appeal as globally - everything seems to be done on a ski, blade, or skate. Compare that to the sports in the Summer Olympics. -Very few U.S. stars, relative to some of the hype that goes into the Summer Olympics. -Time difference - not sure how much people care, but a lot of the stuff in prime time (in the U.S.) isn't live and already aired. So the hardcore [insert random event here] fans probably already watched on Peacock when it aired live.- 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
We mostly just watch the condensed prime time coverage, so very little curling lol. It's basically life shuffle board on ice. Or bocce ball if you've played that. Closest to the center of the target wins that end. If they have the two closest "stones" they get two points. If they have the three closest, three points. The person throwing has to release it by a certain line on the sheet of ice. Their teammate or teammates can sweep in front of the stone, reducing friction on the ice (if they want it to go faster/farther or stay on a certain trajectory longer). The opposing team can sweep in "the house" (basically near the target) - essentially trying to reduce friction to get one to slide out of the back, for example. Teams alternate turns throwing.- 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
Here's my quick summary so far: U.S. = diplomatic boycott Mikaela Shiffrin = disastrous start Nathan Chen = redemption Lindsey Jacobellis = also redemption Chloe Kim = still incredible Elaine Gu = perhaps the most interesting (high profile) athlete at these Games Kamila Valieva = the best ever? now marred in a doping scandal Alpine skiing conditions = crap Probably plenty that I'm missing.- Figure Skating
More doping issues from Russia? Who could have seen this coming except literally everyone. I don't think Valieva is to blame as she's only 15, but rather her coach(es) and the Russian Federation who don't seem to care about punishments like "Olympics Athletes of Russia" and "Russian Olympic Committee." Anyway, hope Valieva can get away from her monster of a coach, Marina Kudriavtseva. She has a track record of coaching girls who seem to retire before they're 21. EDIT - mixing up the names of the coaches, possible. Eteri Tutberidze is the head coach at the Sambo 70 club in Moscow. She coached Evgenia Medvedeva, who retired before she turned 22 due to a chronic back injury. She coached Alina Zagitova, who effectively retired at the age of 18 (she was suspended in 2020 and then was not included on the Russian national team for the '21-'22 season. She hasn't competed since 2020. Tutberidze coached Yulia Lipnitskaya, the gold medalist in 2014, who retired at the age of 19 in 2017. So there's a bit of a track record in Russia of burning these girls out before they even hit adulthood. Several former skaters have said their coaches deprived them of food during practices, skating them starved. 2nd EDIT - Tutberidze had Anna Shcherbakova compete with covid last year.- Ohio GOP / Republican Party

I mean, the legislature is just going to keep gerrymandering until we get to the point of no return and then LaRose will just enforce unconstitutional maps, right? Fav this tweet.- Electric Cars
Tesla doesn't care about quality. To "solve" the chip crisis over the last year or so they have: -not used auto grade chips (this could be a problem in the long run - chips used in automobiles go through more rigorous testing than chips used for other things) -cut out lumbar support -recent report last night that they are shipping cars without a second steering rack (needed for full autonomy) in tens of thousands of cars made in their China factory (https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/07/tesla-cut-a-steering-component-to-deal-with-chip-shortage.html) Tesla consistently ranks in the bottom two in quality by JD Power and Consumer Reports. There's plenty of evidence now that they cut corners in order to hit their delivery goals. If you care about accelerating the fastest you can in a straight line or value the supercharger network or your car farting (or you're buying Elon's lies about robotaxis), buy a Tesla. If you just want a solidly built, quality EV with nearly the same range as a Tesla, you have a much wider range of options. Not that all other EVs are perfect by any means, but they seem to put the work in to make their vehicles reliable. - Driverless Cars
