  1. Doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose of the "design competition?" They picked a winner....and now they completely changed the design lol. I mean, I like it, probably better than the original. But if I'm one of the firms that lost, I'm probably thinking, "wtf? They didn't actually care about sticking to the designs we submitted?" Just a little odd is all, given the "submit us your best proposals" mindset. Design changes happen, of course, but if it's going to change that drastically, why have a pseudo-competition at all?
  2. Give their money to the women.
  3. Not sure where to put this, but why are Republican lawmakers over a week late on passing a budget?
  4. Clippers completely punting on drafting for the next half decade is hilarious. Is Paul George worth that? I guess most draft picks miss, so...maybe? With all the hype around Westbrook, I didn't even realize Paul George was All-NBA First Team this last season. It seems the era of "Big 3" and "super teams" may be over, intentionally or not, for now. The Lakers have LeBron and Anthony Davis. The Clippers will counter that with Kawhi and Paul George. The Warriors still have Curry & Thompson (when he gets back), to say nothing of Draymond Green. The Nets will have Kyrie and Durant (at some point). To the extent that it's another top duo, Houston has Harden and Chris Paul. It looks like a lot of guys are opting for a "Big 2" era, and using the rest of the cap space on better talent around them vs. "Big 3's" and league-minimum talent to fill out the roster. I'm not really sure who the favorite is of the California teams (the Clippers, maybe?). Should hopefully make for a more competitive season after the Warriors' dominance the last 4-5 years.

  6. Who or what is the arbiter of a "legit city?"
  7. Yeah, this team is drastically worse than it was two months, with no real plan in sight to improve much beyond hoping some prospects pan out. This is going to be a ~30 win type of season.
  8. ^They all look like high school kids who don't have summer jobs and nothing better to do.

Don't really care (knew about it from Gramarye several months ago, actually - it only recently escalated him to asking others to not quote me or jonoh81). But it seems a bit hypocritical to allow a mod to block users (which, fine, again it doesn't really matter) but not allow those users to block said mod or mods. If that's how it is, how the admins want it be, fine. It just seems like that perhaps it's a flaw in the new system that hasn't been brought up before because no one has come across it.

If moderators are free to block ("ignore" is probably the action taken within one's profile) as well as to request others not quote those forumers simply because they dislike their opinions or point of view, I would submit non-moderators should then also be allowed to block moderators for the same reason.
  11. But that wraparound on the proposed Millennial Tower was too much.

^Impossible 2.0 was unveiled at CES and several vegetarians stopped eating because they thought they were tricked into eating a real burger. Don't be fooled - the fake meats aren't exactly healthy (depending on what you subscribe to as "healthy"). They do use vastly fewer resources - water, greenhouse gases - than a burger. But as Ram notes above, if you're trying to avoid meat and want to sub in healthier alternatives (tofu, black bean burgers, etc.) then Beyond/Impossible wouldn't be for you. Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't a good half dozen reasons to try them or even eat them somewhat regularly. Still, just like regular beef burgers, I doubt your doctor or nutritionist would say it's "healthy" to have one every day. While the fake meats may be on the rise now, I'm curious how well and how quickly "lab grown" meats will get to market.

Impossible > Beyond (though if you're into investing, you should have hit that BYND IPO lol)
  14. It was Danny Green who nearly screwed it up this time. Hilarious to watch all the GSW fans complain "but injuries!!" without realizing/acknowledging their first title came against a Love and Kyrie-less Cavaliers.
  15. There are already reports out that he is expected to miss the entire '19-'20 season - that won't stop the free agency offers from coming in, though. I wonder if he signs his player option and takes the guaranteed money from Golden State while he rehabs.
  16. What's weird is that prior to 2015/2016 time, I liked a lot of the guys on Golden State -> Steph Curry is objectively fun to watch when he's not playing against your team. Klay Thompson is a world class shooter who can play lock down defense. I've always like Iguodala and it's hard not to root for Shaun Livingston after his injury. Still, collectively (and probably in part because of Draymond Green), I can't stand them. They are cocky and whiny - and whiny in a way that is reminiscent of the Tim Duncan-era Spurs where they seem legitimately shocked by every foul called against them. There's the tech-bro aura around their fans and ownership. There's a mythical legend around Steve Kerr's coaching genius...a guy who just happened to luck into two of the best shooters of all-time. There is the "recruiting" of Kevin Durant after they blew a 3-1 lead (and to me, Durant's legacy is forever tarnished for feeling the need to join the best regular season NBA team in history after his Thunder choked away a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals). On top of that, they then felt the need to go recruit a top 5 center in Demarcus Cousins. So I'm happy to see what is likely the end of their dynasty (though with Curry they'll stay competitive and maybe even win another 'ship).
  17. Durant suffered a torn Achilles - and the decision to play him in Game 5 will be talked about for the next two decades, if not more, I'm sure.
  18. ^Townhall in Cleveland is one of my favorite places to go. Excited to have it here.

St. Louis routed Boston on the road in Game 7 to the tune of a 4-1 win. Some notable similarities to recent previous winners - a young, rookie goalie backstopped the team in the playoffs and the team fired their coach midway through the season. The offseason officially begins today.
  22. ^I'm sorry - $18 for ramen??
  23. The math on the end goal is pretty straightforward - the Trinity Study concludes that a 4% withdrawal rate is successful (i.e. a 60/40 or 70/30 portfolio has a positive balance at the end of 30 years) in ~96% of scenarios over the last century (I may be messing that up slightly, but that's the gist). So the path pointed out by the NYT piece isn't that different from white males - spend less than your peers typically, don't keep up with the Joneses, spend a lot less or nothing on entertainment, invest the rest. The basic tenets are the same - of course, "spending less" may look different if you make $250k+ in San Francisco vs. $45k in the Midwest. Some people are more conservative so they want to use a 3% withdrawal rate. Some people have no intention of "retiring" but simply want the financial security to switch to a new (read: more fulfilling) field. Of course, people always relate better/more to stories they can understand. That's part of the reason why I could never read more than a few posts from The Financial Samurai - the dude lives in a Silicon Valley bubble and posts about numbers that are unfathomable to us in Ohio. The NYT article also notes women tend to stay more anonymous while men are more likely to use their real name on their blog. So it's hard to say if those who are pursuing FI/RE are overwhelmingly male or not - based on unscientific surveys I've seen I would say that is probably the case.
