Columbus: Downtown: Convention Center / North Market Area Developments and News
DarkandStormy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^I'd have to do some digging, but I think around the time that the North Market Tower proposals came out, they also published tentative plans about filling in along Vine from Neil to Park St. I don't think that area is "bad" - it could certainly use some help (see failing Garage Bar/Bucks n Pucks/whatever it is now + the old Lodge Bar / Touchdowns being abandoned for years now). And yes, Neil/Vine is a terrible pedestrian intersections. I have, however, gone from Brothers to a Clippers game or Express Live (that's still weird to say) and just cut through the Blue Jackets parking garage.

Columbus: Downtown: Convention Center / North Market Area Developments and News
DarkandStormy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYou mean the northern end of the Arena District? A place that was nothing 20 years ago? Needs spruced up? It's getting a freaking tower! That said, there are a ton of crap gravel surface lots between Neil & Park St. There is potential there - I can't remember what the "master plan" for the Arena District was but I'm sure there have been plans to fill in that area for years.

Columbus: Downtown: Millennial Tower
Read that the holdup was Arshot added a hotel component and that they expect to break ground this year and construction to take 18-19 months. http://www.dispatch.com/news/20170628/millennial-tower-proposal-downtown-now-includes-3-more-floors-hotel

What are you watching?
We gave up at some point into Season 3 (?). It just got kind of boring and uninteresting.

Electric Cars
^It only works if ALL cars follow the laws, and that will only exist (mostly) when 90+% of cars on the roads are fully autonomous. That will happen in the next 20-25 years, I'm guessing. But it won't work if you still have humans going 15-20 mph above with autonomous vehicles going the speed limit.

Columbus: Downtown: Millennial Tower
http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2017/06/27/millennial-towers-led-video-board-at-issue-before.html That pesky wrap-around board came up in today's meeting. I hope some sort of compromise can be reached - either down to 3-4 stories, or perhaps on just two sides of the building instead of four. We'll see. Fwiw, this is not an entirely unique concept - https://archpaper.com/2017/01/led-walls-downtown-la-public-art/#gallery-0-slide-0

Columbus: Downtown: Millennial Tower
^There's only been three other buildings completed this century even close to that range. The James Cancer Hospital (297 feet) in 2014, the North Bank condos (267 feet) in 2007, and the Miranova building (314 feet) in 2001. The (North) Market Tower is expected to be in the range of 400 feet and completed some time in 2019 (as of now).

Will we see The North Market Tower or this one first?

Columbus Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
Didn't catch this. Kind of disappointing - Zauber was one of my favorite local breweries (probably because I'm partial to Belgian beers). Will be interested to see what happens there.

Columbus: Random Development and News
DarkandStormy replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt just so happens that I started a thread for this Cbus NEXT series over in the City Discussion section. Below is a direct link to it: https://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,31268.0.html Thanks! It covers so many topics, I wasn't sure where to discuss.

Columbus: Cbus NEXT - The Future of Columbus
LOL. So why did we spend the $80 million in upgrades if we're going to replace the whole thing in <15 years?
-
Columbus: Cbus NEXT - The Future of Columbus
I think a major hindrance is going to be the lack of commuter rail - and based on COTA's NextGen proposals, no one is taking the lead on it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe all of the "smart" technology will fill in the gaps and we won't need a commuter rail of any kind. But if we're heading to a metro area of 3 million people (at this rate, it'll be before 2050), we will be held back by not connecting more areas of the city with something other than COTA buses and car2go's.

Columbus: Random Development and News
DarkandStormy replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWasn't sure where to post this, but the Dispatch is running a series from June through December on the future of Columbus. http://gatehouseprojects.com/cbusnext/home/site/dispatch.com Some pretty good stuff so far - looks like graphics, pictures, podcasts, plenty of interviews, articles as well. It says today should focus on transportation, but I haven't been able to find it within the menu & different pages. Oh well.

What are you watching?
Netflix - Bloodline. Season 3, like Season 2, just can't match Season 1 for me. Oh well. Like most Netflix-original shows, I get hooked early, but the longer they go the less interest I have. Hulu - we just started the Handmaid's Tale. It's ****ed up.

Butler off the table - the TWolves straight up stole him out of Chicago. Other reports circulating the Cavs are trying to acquire Danny Green as the Spurs try to clear up cap space for free agency.

Reports are indicating both the Bulls and Pacers asked for Kyrie in deals for Butler or George. Cavs walked away (smartly).

Columbus Blue Jackets Discussion
Lars William Karlsson was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday. The Blue Jackets paid a steep price to protect unprotected players Josh Anderson, Jack Johnson, and Joonas Korpisalo. Columbus sent this year's 1st round pick (24th overall), a 2019 2nd round pick, and David Clarkson (who is "retired" more or less for the remainder of his contract) to "steer" Vegas towards Karlsson or Matt Calvert.
