  1. I drove down High yesterday and it looked like they were working on the sixth floor of the Moxy hotel. It will probably start to be visible from 670 soon if it isn't already.
  2. I think the problem was how large the parcel is. You could have fit two Riffe Towers side by side here. If had been split into two or three parcels, I could have seen one or two developers going up to 20 stories, maybe even more. I have read that the amount of square footage in the building currently being built is equal to some of the tallest buildings in Columbus even though it's only 6 stories tall. It certainly would have been nice to have some more height here, but I think this is going to be a great addition regardless. Now if only we could get the rest of the buildings across the street renovated and get that 12-story hotel built that was rumored to be going on the last surface lot over there.
  3. The crane for the Gay & High project was dismantled yesterday. It looks like there is still quite a bit of work to be done to finish the project though.
  4. It looks like COTA's network redesign is paying so far. https://usa.streetsblog.org/2018/08/14/the-columbus-bus-network-redesign-boosted-ridership/
  5. I read the same rumor on the message board. Said she called 911 dozens of times saying he was beating her/chasing her, and he was on campus at the time. At the end, 911 stopped sending a car. Powell police apparently testified on Zach's behalf at the divorce hearing. The woman allegedly freaked out when Zach was going to lose his job because that meant her child support (means of living) was going to drop way down as she doesn't work. All this is total rumor mill of course but if it's true at all, it would explain why none of the other coaches' wives did anything when she was texting them all... Shouldn't we be able to figure out if the police did, in fact, testify on Zach's behalf in the divorce hearing? Wouldn't that be public record? I would think that would be pretty telling if it can be confirmed.
  6. I'm intrigued to see what this is all about....
  7. I couldn't care less about the football side of things. I'm concerned about whether someone is about to be unnecessarily fired or not. I would classify myself as a casual OSU football fan, but I'm 100% on board with firing Urban IF he deserves to be fired. I'm never on board with firing anyone simply to save face or to make a statement that domestic violence is bad. At this point in time, I don't think we can definitively say which group this falls into based on what we currently know.
  8. Go read about what happened at Colorado University a couple years ago. It's a very similar situation and was not deemed to be Title IX related.
  9. This doesn't really answer my question though. Courtney Smith had nothing to do with the university. Title IX protects people directly involved with the university such as students. Additionally, the incidents never even took place at the university, as far as I know. From what I can tell, the Title IX argument holds very little weight. In my opinion, the biggest issue for Urban could be if he directly or indirectly threatened her into shutting up. Courtney Smith did have something to do with the university as she was legally married to an employee of the university so under title IX, when Courtney Smith let Mrs. Meyer know of the abuse, and since Mrs. Meyer is an employee of OSU, she is legally required to report the abuse at the hands of an OSU employee. That is how I read it. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2018/08/01/ohio-state-coach-urban-meyers-amended-contract-could-pose-problem/885020002/ I could be completely wrong on this but that's how I say it. From Brutus Buckeye response: Here is the thing, is Ohio State University going to believe that Shelley didn't tell Urban? And even if Urban says she didn't, is the press or anyone else going to believe that? Lastly, even IF the press believes that, what about the text messages to the other wife of a coach saying "Urban said Zach denied everything" and "Urban doesn't know what to do". I think that's proof enough for the university and the public to know Urban knew and didn't report it to the University, which under Title IX could be grounds for removal, but not certain if that was in his clause before his latest contract. Even if it wasn't in his clause, do you think OSU would retain him with the public backlash? I think the chances are like 10% Urban Meyer coaches for OSU ever again and I would be very surprised if he did get retained. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2018/08/01/ohio-state-coach-urban-meyers-amended-contract-could-pose-problem/885020002/ I'm really going to need some solid proof that being married to a person that works at school subjects your life to Title IX requirements. I'm not saying this isn't true, but it doesn't logically make sense to me.

  11. Can someone give me a solid explanation for how this is a Title IX violation? I understand that Urban is a "mandatory reporter", but my understanding is only that he must report incidents that occurred on campus or incidents that occurred to someone directly related to the school, i.e. a student or member of faculty. I don't believe this case would qualify as something that Urban is mandated to report.
  12. Ignoring the drama surrounding what will happen to Urban for a second....the most troubling part of this whole story, in my opinion, is the fact that seemingly everyone in this woman's personal life, including her own parents, told her to NOT go to the police and to NOT press charges. That infuriates me. If the screenshots of text messages and pictures sent to Shelly are real, and I have no reason to believe they aren't, I can't believe her immediate family wouldn't have at least been privy to those details, if not more. I'm struggling to find a reason why they would tell her to not press charges, and the fact that it would cause him to lose his coaching job is not a valid reason.
  13. DII schools give athletic scholarships. DIII schools are not allowed to give athletic scholarships, and are not allowed to give "academic" scholarships that the players would not have otherwise qualified for if they were not playing a sport. Baldwin Wallace got busted for breaking this rule a couple years ago, and got hit with a postseason bans and had to forfeit championships they inappropriately won. DIII athletes love to tell you how their coach "got them some extra money" because the coach wanted them so bad, but more often than not this is not the case.
  14. The biggest reason DIII schools have a football program is because it brings in 100+ guys every season, the vast majority of which wouldn't have otherwise considered going to the school. DIII schools use their athletics department as an extention of their admissions department. A large percentage of the freshman class at a DIII school with a 1,500-3,500 enrollment are athletes.
  15. This is a great infill project, and actually a bit taller than I expected it to be. It looks like it is actually taller than the Crowne Plaza hotel to the West of it, which I didn't expect. Hopefully we can get Market Tower and the new Hilton under way by the end of the year, but with the rising construction costs, I'm becoming a bit worried. I think the Hilton happens no matter what, but Market Tower has me worried. Hopefully we get some news soon.
  16. Anybody know how many floors are up now? I drove by about two weeks ago and it looked like they were working on the fifth floor.
  17. I actually think an MLS team would be viable in Cleveland. People forget that this is the largest media market in the state. And there’s also a lot of soccer fans in the area. I saw this first hand when my company used to produce shows for the old Cleveland City Stars. If they had a stadium that’s not too big and in an ideal location and the on the field product is competitive, they’ll find themselves selling out quickly MLS could possibly be successful in Cleveland, but I think MLS would be opposed at least for the foreseeable future for a couple reasons. First, Cleveland is very saturated, if not over saturated, already when it comes to sports. Cleveland is the 16th largest CSA in the country. There is only one CSA (Pittsburgh) with a smaller population than Cleveland that has three major sports. Cleveland has NFL, MLB, and NBA; and Pittsburgh has NFL, MLB, and NHL. Both cities are certainly on the threshold of being able to support three major pro sports teams and were mostly grandfathered in to having all three to the size of each city many decades ago compared to the rest of the country. At any given time, each city has one of its three teams that gets put on the back burner in terms of attendance. That team tends to be the MLB team in each city, but I think the Cavs and Indians are about to flip spots in Cleveland. Second, the state of Ohio will already be saturated with MLS teams. FCC is joining next year and things are starting to look promising for the Crew to be saved. There is not a single professional sport with three teams in Ohio, and I doubt MLS will be the first unless they end up with 48 teams split into two divisions with pro/rel. Finally, Cleveland isn't viewed as an up and coming hip city. I personally think Cleveland is a very cool and fun city, but MLS tends to be blinded by the cool new things. I don't think they would Cleveland much of a thought unless they pulled a Cincy and started pulling 20k-30k at USL games. I would personally love having three MLS teams in Ohio, but I simply don't think it will happen unless MLS expands well past 30 teams.
  18. As a life long Crew fan living in Columbus, I'm hoping for a day where Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland all have MLS teams. At this point, it's looking like the best case scenario is for Columbus and Cincinnati to be in MLS and Cleveland to be in USL, and even that excites me. Cleveland being in the USL and possibly having their own stadium would create an amazing opportunity for Cleveland-Columbus and Cleveland-Cincinnati matchups in the Open Cup. I think an Ohio Cup preseason friendly event could also be really cool.
  19. Sorry forgot to include it - http://www.thisweeknews.com/business/20180719/pair-of-proposals-would-add-300-apartments I agree this is a huge downgrade. The previous proposal was perfect for this spot Thanks for the link! Yea, this updated proposal is totally unacceptable. I hope the commission pushes back on this update. I can understand why the Highpointe development was only 6 stories because it was so massive, and the same goes for the Edwards development at High and Gay. This development has no excuse for going below 8 stories. It would be a huge missed opportunity. Also, I will say that although LC has taken forever to finally complete their 8-story building, it is actually looking really good. Perhaps the almost 4 year wait was somewhat worth it.
  20. ^ Is there a link? Six stories is absolutely unacceptable at this location.
  21. Spare me the "blot out the sun" talk. It'd be less than a block affected. Walk down the street to the park if you need the sun. The "blot out the sun" argument always kills me. Yea, if you plopped Rhode's Tower down right here you might have a bit of a shadow. A 10-14 story building is not going to do much damage though.
  22. The surface parking lot and vacant lot really blend in well with the fabric of the neighborhood though.
  23. I'm not quite sure what to make of everything in this article....
  24. I can't speak for UC or Xavier but I CAN speak for OSU. Ohio State college kids do not go to the Short North, even when they are over 21. 7th Street is as far south as your typical OSU student goes and it is VERY much like UD where it's off-campus party-centric (aka any street east of High or north of Lane) + college strip for bars (High and Brown, respectively). I'd argue the North Market area is more college-centric than the Short North. Jake is correct and it has nothing to do with an "actual city." "Actual cities" also have college ghettos that are vibrant (Dinkytown, Westwood, Cambridge/Somerville, Guadelupe, University Hill, etc). Using OTR and Mt. Adams is a cop-out, in all honesty. I think you are pretty much spot on about OSU students, at least during the school year. I do think there are a decent number college students that end up in the Short North from surrounding schools like Capital and ODU. Park Street has historically sucked many of the college kids from the Short North that weren't up near campus, so it will be interesting to see what happens with some of the Park Street bars closing down.
