Columbus Crew Discussion
Watching Jimmy Haslam furiously celebrate a goal scored by a Ghanaian to win a continental trophy against a soccer team from Mexico in a $300 million stadium he paid for in Columbus for the MLS team he owns which he bought from the previous owner to keep it from being moved to a different city is something I certainly did not see on the horizon a few years ago.

So I was wrong on the Crew attendance. I said it would be around 5k. The announced attendance was 18k. I think that number is a bit inflated, but judging by what I saw on TV it was way better than I thought it was going to be. It helped that there were a ton of Cruz Azul fans in attendance. I would imagine a decent percentage of the Cruz Azul fans actually live in Central Ohio, so hopefully some of them were impressed enough by the stadium to adopt the Crew as their American team. Clippers attendance was announced at 5,570. CBJ attendance attendance was announced at 9,220. So we had nearly 33k in attendance across the three venues. Not bad. Looking ahead, here are some big dates for the AD through the remainder of the MLS regular season: - Saturday, October 16th: Crew vs Miami at 6:00pm. CBJ vs Seattle at 7:00pm. Angels & Airwaves at Express at 7:00pm. 40-42k total attendance - Saturday October 23rd: Crew vs NYRB at 6:00pm. CBJ vs Carolina at 7:00pm. Highball Halloween at Express at 5:00pm. 42-45k total attendance - Wednesday October 27th: Crew vs Orlando at 7:30pm. Twenty One Pilots at NWA at 8:00pm. 38k total attendance. The stretch of October 13th-16th is going to be huge for the area. The USMNT play Costa Rica in a World Cup Qualifier on the 13th, The CBJ have two home games, the Crew have a home game, and Express has 4 concerts.

New Albany: Developments and News
cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionTo be fair, Meijer was originally named Meijer's. Lowe's is actually named Lowe's and d*ck's is actually named d*ck's. All are named after their founder. It's not at all uncommon for local retail stores to be named after their owner/founder in a similar manner. So you can see how people would see Kroger is called Kroger's. It's still funny though lol.

Columbus: General Business & Economic News
Somewhat. They have a decent furniture and seasonal selection (patio furniture and stuff like that), and were one of the few retailers carrying such a selection that were able to remain open during the worst of the lockdowns. The fact they carry food and cleaning supplies allowed them to stay open when furniture-specific stores had to operate online-only for a while. This allowed them to bring in new customers who would have otherwise not payed them any attention. I'm guessing they are trying to capitalize on that and bring stores closer to the new customers they gain in the hopes of retaining them. Personally, I don't think it will work in the long run. This seems to be a good way to artificially increase sales in the near turn to keep shareholders and the board happy, but there doesn't seem to be much of a long-term plan to be able to keep up with Target, Walmart, Dollar General, and other competitors. Big Lots seems to be trying to float between Target and Dollar General and I'm not sure that's going to be sustainable.

Columbus Crew Discussion
Absolutely horrible scheduling by MLS/Campeones Cup. The TV ratings are going to be horrible. Most of the non-Crew fans who would have otherwise watched this game will be watching/attending their own team's games instead.

Not sure how big the crowd will be at NWA for the preseason game, but I know there won't be a big crowd for the Crew game. It's a glorified exhibition match and I don't think the game is even included in season ticket packages. If it pulls 5k people I'll be impressed. There have been a few nights already where the Crew and the Clippers played at the same time where the Crew had about 20k in attendance and the Clippers had about 8-9k in attendance, along with a concert at Express with a couple thousand people. Those nights were probably busier than what tonight will be.

I'll one-up you at the risk of ruining my parking plan haha. The last two games I've gone to, I've parked in the surface lot at the NE corner of Vine and Kilbourne. It takes two seconds to get out of, it's extremely easy to get on 670, and it only cost $5 if paying by app this past Saturday. It's a great deal. In terms of the game tomorrow, it's going to be a very light crowd at the LDC. Nobody really cares about this game as it's more or less an exhibition match, and it's not included in season ticket packages.

Columbus: Downtown: Hilton Columbus Downtown Tower II
Yea, the reason Market Tower is mixed-use is because the city specifically asked for that in the RFP. Same with Scioto Peninsula. But with anything from the convention center would likely just be a hotel or parking. While we are on the subject (and this could probably be moved to the convention center thread), the surface lot in question is certainly the most attractive of the land that the convention center owns, as far as I'm aware. I know they own the massive surface lot at the NE corner of Nationwide and 4th, and a hotel could certainly go there, but the lot on Goodale is so much more attractive. Based solely on logic and absolutely no inside info, I would expect to see something about the Goodale at some point over the next couple years, depending on how the Covid story continues to play out of course.

Agreed.

I doubt we would see a mixed-use building. The convention center owns that lot just as they do the lot the Hilton is being built on. That would probably put out an RFP searching for someone to develop a hotel tower. They are still short on hotel rooms and would want to maximize the number of rooms in the tower. Adding apartments probably wouldn't make much sense, which in my opinion is totally fine.

Yea we've talked about that one a few times in various threads. It would definitely be a great spot for a sizeable hotel tower. It can be connected to a parking garage and the convention center and it's practically on the High Street cap. Given how small the lot is, you would probably need a fairly tall tower to make it worth it. It's definitely a spot to watch for a new tower.

I'm very aware of the situation. It was obviously not meant to be a slight towards Cincinnati. No need for anyone to be defending anyone else's city here as this type of stuff never ends well. As I said, Cincinnati has continued densifying their skyline with very nice mixed-use towers in the past few years. All 3Cs are experiencing very positive movement, each in their own way, and it's something we can all celebrate.

Cincinnati is actually going in the wrong direction. They are demolishing a 350' tower. Although, to be fair, I believe they've added a good number of 15-20 story towers over the past few years. Nothing skyline altering, but they've continued to densify their already dense skyline.

Wow, the amount of change he's lived through in this city is crazy! There are almost 2 million more people in the metro area now than when he was born! We need to get your dad on UO to do a Q&A session haha.

Not only that, but apparently it's a grower too.

Here's a couple recent skyline shots which show the impact the tower is already having. On a side note, I was at the Crew game on Saturday and the tower looks massive from the upper east side concourse area. Not just tall, but wide. It's very impressive. I can't even imagine how cool it will be once we add Market Tower to the mix.

Looks like the tower will top out at 352'. That would make it the 13th tallest building in the city currently, but by the time it gets built it will be the 15th tallest because of the Hilton and OSU towers.
