  1. Looks like Lancaster has some big city problems ;) lol The Valley View Golf Club and Lancaster Country Club have both sold as well. Here's an article covering the Valley View sale. Apparently there were potential buyers who wanted to turn it into a housing development, but thankfully the owners wanted to see it continue as a golf course and were able to find buyers who intended to make that happen. As far as I know, no future plans have been announced for the Lancaster Country Club yet, but I would be surprised if it doesn't continue as a golf course.
  2. Yea, those screenshots show the 10 year change, but most of those developments actually took place in the last five years. And there are many before/after shots I could have included if I felt like spending more time on it. Five years from now we'll look at the five year before/after shots and say the same thing about many other areas like the Scioto Peninsula and Franklinton.
  3. How in the heck did you manage to pull that off? lol
  4. PSA for the folks who don't get to see different parts of the city often to keep tabs on construction progress - Google maps has added a lot of 2021 streetview imagery around Columbus, some as recent as August. I would highly recommend checking out the ten year difference for various parts of the city. It's pretty impressive. Here's just a few examples. Short North/VV/Convention Center/Part of AD from 670E July 2011: August 2021: High Street/Hilton Towers June 2011: August 2021: New Crew Stadium/Astor Park/Almost the Casino June 2011: June 2021: AD Rich People Condos June 2011: June 2021: 5th & Summit June 2011: June 2021: OSU WMC July 2011: August 2021: Bridge Park July 2011: July 2021:
  5. Manhattan driving is fun because everyone knows what they are doing and where they are going, and it's every man for himself. Pickerington driving is terrifying because nobody knows where they are going or when their lane is going to abruptly end, and everyone thinks it's your job to look out for them.
  6. Driving on 256 and, increasingly, Refugee Road is often a terrifying experience. And I'm someone who rarely gets nervous while driving and actually enjoys crazy city driving in places like Manhattan.
  7. The Pickerington disrespect is palpable. ;)
  8. Maybe we need a Pickerington thread (do we have one?), but here is some info and a rendering of the coming OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital.
  9. It might become so appealing that Millennial Tower could get built there instead of Columbus....lol Great point on the wealth being pulled away from Newark. Lancaster definitely has a leg up on Newark in terms of the downtown area being connected to its nicer neighborhoods. Lancaster has many beautiful historic houses directly north of its downtown/commercial. This area is easily walkable to the commercial strip. The entire area north of "downtown" Lancaster and south of the fairgrounds is housing that ranges from decent to very nice. Newark, unfortunately, doesn't have anything like that directly connected to its downtown, but hopefully the nearby neighborhoods will improve as downtown continues to improve. This is no way supposed to suggest that one city is better than the other. It's merely a comparison of the two with respect to a single attribute. Both are nice and are "better" than the other in various manners.
  10. The final site compliance plan has been filed. This is the first time a final plan has been filed. To this point, only preliminary plans had been filed. We are one step closer to this project becoming a reality. https://portal.columbus.gov/Permits/Cap/CapDetail.aspx?Module=Engineering&TabName=Engineering&capID1=21LAC&capID2=00000&capID3=00832&agencyCode=COLUMBUS&IsToShowInspection=
  11. An Amtrak stop in Newark would be great for the city. Even better, but probably much less likely, would be a commuter rail from Newark to Columbus. It would really unlocked Newark's potential and take it to the next level. The same could be said for Lancaster, which is very similar (although slightly smaller) to Newark in many ways. It's a historically blue collar town. The anchor city in its small region of the state. Connected to, but somewhat independent of, the Columbus urban area. Has a solid downtown commercial area with fairly dense historic neighborhoods surrounding it. Has a somewhat separate identity from Columbus. Has never really had a decade of material population decline.
  12. If the Columbus city limits covered the same area Houston's does but maintained its current population density across the entire area, it would have 1.3 million more people than Houston. Ipso facto, Columbus is now a mega-American city.
  13. Why do you keep referring to Newark as a large city with large city issues when it's very obviously not even remotely close to being a large city? I completely get your desire to defend Newark and I agree with many of your points, but saying ridiculous things like "Newark has big city issues" is simply not helpful. It's population is just below 50k. According to Wikipedia there are 326 US cities with populations over 100k. Newark is only halfway to that mark and will never make it there. There are probably ~450 US cities with larger populations than Newark, so let's be a little bit more realistic here.
  14. You could definitely have a nice Saturday visiting downtown Newark and Granville. There are plenty of nice shops and restaurants in both places to keep you busy for the day.
  15. Here's a pretty cool shot of COSI with the Scioto Peninsula and Gravity construction activity behind it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CTk1FpSrIpE/
  16. What a crazy game. Going on the road and winning by 3 goals is something that rarely happens in CONCACAF WCQ, but somehow we managed to do that even after being down a goal for most of the game and without 3-4 of our best players. Oh, and an 18 year old making just his second appearance with the national team was involved in one way or another in all 4 goals! With that being said, the USMNT fanbase is one of the most bipolar groups of people. After winning the Nations League and Gold Cup over the summer, they were ready to build Berhalter a statue. Then, after drawing our first two qualifying matches and being down a goal in this match, they were ready to publicly execute him. The constant flip-flopping is crazy. Anyway...on to the next qualifying window! Hopefully Pulisic and Reyna will be healthy, McKennie will learn to stop breaking team rules to hook up with girls, and we can get some guys like Hoppe and Musah back with the team. I'm still confident that we will qualify, but it's going to be a dog fight!
  17. The problem is you have to go inside to see the facade. I don’t want that to be the case. I want to be able to see the original facade from the other side of the river. There’s going to be a lot of contemporary buildings on that side of the river. Let’s save the one marque historic facade and keep it the way it is. Also, I don’t get the need to create a corridor through COSI. All pedestrian traffic flows from the bridges and will go around COSI once the peninsula is built. Creating a corridor through COSI is completely unnecessary.
  18. I would prefer to see the historic facade of COSI remain untouched. It's a beautiful building and I would hate to see it messed with.

  21. Construction progress from a pretty great picture I came across on Flickr. I think I count 11 tower cranes in this picture 😮
  22. Millennial Tower will solve that problem! 🤣
  23. I came here to post the below pic and say that it looks like we have about 100' to go before being topped out. Sounds like I was right! Thanks for your construction insight!
  24. You are probably right. The extremely and humid weather last week and then the recent rain probably slowed progress as well. It looks like the next couple weeks will be pretty mild though so hopefully that means they'll be full steam ahead. Great progress pics though. Keep them coming!
  25. Looks like we are closing in on another crane jump!
