Columbus: Downtown: Hilton Columbus Downtown Tower II
Here's the progress as seen from the OHPC construction cam over the course of ~2.5 weeks. Things have been pretty slow moving. If they are doing poured concrete the entire way up, vertical progress is going to continue to be pretty slow, I would imagine.

cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThanks for the info. Considering they were able to keep the foundation, I have to think someone will get something built on top of it. Whether that's Encova or someone else, I'm sure it will get done. It would be nice if Encova could simply rebuild exactly what they had nearly completed, because it was looking really good.

cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^ Awesome! I'm pretty sure we had a discussion here a while ago about this lot and how it needs to be developed. I'm always a proponent for more height, but I think in this instance a building of this size will mesh well with the surrounding historic buildings and also not over-power the park. Here is the lot for reference: I know Encova demolished the majority of the building that was set on fire last summer, but did we ever get confirmation that they were, in fact, rebuilding them? I haven't been by the area in a while, so I don't know what's going on there. If not, hopefully it happens soon. It would be really nice to have Topiary Park fully surrounded by buildings rather than vacant lots.

cbussoccer replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionDepending on how things play out, you might actually be able to see 10-11 tower cranes from this vantage point soon. Drilling is already occurring for the Dodd garage, which I believe will use a 250' tower crane. Also, I'm pretty sure a third tower crane is still to come for the new hospital tower. It also seems like the Hilton tower crane might be visible from this vantage point once it jumps a couple times.

Columbus: OSU Medical Center Expansion
cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionSo true. I think we should start a thread where we can compile before and after shots of different parts of the city using Google street view. I noticed last week that they pushed through updated imagery with images from late 2020, so I started going to different areas and looking at the change from 2015-2020 and it was pretty crazy.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
How long does the boarding process generally take for Amtrak? How long before your scheduled departure do you generally have to arrive at the station? I've never used Amtrak before, but I would love to have it as an option for traveling down to Cincinnati for a Crew-FCC game if the train schedule, cost, and travel time make sense.

Columbus: OSU Medical Center Expansion
cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionSo exciting! We haven't had this type of height under construction at once since the 1989-1991 time frame. During that span, the Riffe Center (504'), William Green Building (530'), Three Nationwide Plaza (408'), and the Franklin County Courthouse (464') were all finished. We aren't quite to that level right now, but if Market Tower gets underway next year as planned, we will have three towers in the 350-400' range under construction at the same time. Slightly off topic to this thread, but I wonder if the Hilton Tower height is measured from its base along Convention Center Drive, or from High Street. It will really only make a ~15' difference, but I was just curious.

Columbus: OSU Medical Center Expansion
cbussoccer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYea, same for me. I can't imagine how difficult it is to manage such a massive project, especially when you consider the fact that it's not just one company/team doing the work. You have dozens of different contractors/companies/teams working on many different aspects of the project all at once.

John Glenn Columbus International Airport
Yep, it really happened at the worst possible time for the airport. I do wonder if a growth in leisure travel might offset some of the losses in business travel. I just read earlier today that United and Alaska have already seen their leisure travel numbers rebound back to "normal levels" while business numbers are still at about 20-30% of normal. United seems confident that they can build up a leisure travel base that they did not have before with some of the routes they are adding this summer. A Columbus-Portland, Maine flight is something I never thought would happen, but they are giving it a try. Maybe we will start to see more interesting routes like that which are more geared toward leisure travel. I do think business travel will bounce back pretty close to where it was within a couple years. I think companies who jump back into in-person, face-to-face business will find that they are more successful than companies who try to remain virtual, which will slowly pull people back into the real world from the virtual world. I could definitely be wrong, but that's the feeling I have right now.

Looks like seat installation is complete on the east side of the stadium and is over half way done on the west side of the stadium. Seats have also been fully installed on the south end of the stadium, although that is not visible on the construction cam.

Yea, LAX is a horrible experience. I hope they bring the route back for the sole reason of having more connections from CMH, but I personally hate that airport. Spirit is starting a CMH-LAX route though, so I guess if someone really wants to go to LAX they can take their chances on Spirit.

So I just checked Delta's website and it looks like daily direct flights to SLC are available to be booked as early as June 5th. This flight could obviously get removed from the schedule as we get closer, but it's definitely a good sign that they have it on the schedule. However, they don't seem to have high hopes for bringing back the LAX flight. I checked through the end of August and couldn't find any available direct flights.

John Glenn Columbus International Airport
The pandemic really hit at the worst possible time. CMH was on the verge of really increasing service to the West coast and then the lockdowns completely killed the momentum. United added a daily flight to SFO, Delta added a daily flight to SLC, Alaska was going to add a second daily flight to SEA, and Delta was going to add a seasonal daily flight to SEA. Thankfully Alaska has maintained one daily flight to SEA pretty much this whole time, but everything else got put on hold. Hopefully some of the routes get resurrected over the coming year. I am somewhat confident in the SLC route returning. Vacation destinations seem to be rebounding much quicker than business destinations. SLC would definitely be more of a vacation destination from Columbus than a business destination, so hopefully Delta brings it back. They also need to bring back their LAX route, but that may be a bit more difficult.

Columbus: Downtown: Arena District Developments and News
cbussoccer replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI think a central station at the airport could work very well, assuming that we could also get some form of quick and easy transport directly into downtown. Nobody wants to arrive at the airport at 5 and then be forced to sit on a bus on 670 in rush hour traffic for 30 minutes to get downtown.

Alright, I really don't think we need to continue discussing which stadium is better. It's eventually going to turn into an argument between Columbus people and Cincinnati people and nobody wants that. Also, the last sentence in bold kind of seems like a cheap shot at Cincinnati. Maybe it wasn't meant that way and was just poorly worded, but for whatever reasons this type of comment about population can usually set off quite the argument around these parts. Sorry, not trying to be negative toward you or anything, I can just sense that this thread could get ugly even though we've kept it pretty civil so far. I really don't want to see a giant argument break out and have the thread get locked.

cbussoccer replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionA station at the convention center is definitely the best option. There are numerous parking garages nearby if you are going to drive downtown to catch the train. It’s quick and easy access from 670 if you are ubering from somewhere outside of the core neighborhoods. And it’s walkable to most of the key hotels and attractions that people would be coming in town for. It also provides easy access to most of the key bus lines so no re-routing would be necessary.

cbussoccer replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionCutting down all those trees seems like a lot of work to get rid of a homeless camp. It would be nice if that area could get developed, but it's in such an awkward spot. The railroad tracks are really making things difficult for tying everything together in this area.

Have you seen pictures of it? It looks very cheap. Definitely not on the level of Columbus and Cincinnati.

Crew Stadium is definitely more unique in its external design than West End Stadium. West End Stadium has been compared to Red Bull Arena numerous times because it does look very similar, although West End Stadium is the much improved version of RBA. You can definitely find many stadiums around the world that are designed similar to West End Stadium because it is more of the classic "arena" design, but it's a great design nonetheless.

Crew stadium is going to give it a run for its money when it comes to interior finishes. I think there's a good chance we end up with two of the top five stadiums in the league here in Ohio, they might even be the top two. LAFC's stadium looks pretty amazing and Minnesota's is pretty nice, but I think the location of Crew Stadium and West End Stadium will put them over the top. But seriously, look at some of these amenities in Crew Stadium. Holy crap.
