Columbus: Downtown: Capitol Square Renaissance (Edwards Cos.)
Let's hope! I'm guessing it's just a conceptual plan though.

So I was trying to find a construction cam for this project when I stumbled across a proposal from NBBJ that was not selected. I'm very glad it wasn't chosen, but they had some interesting ideas. http://timcousino.com/2018-hilton-20-proposal-nbbj/

Airline Industry News and Discussion
CMH, CVG, and CLE have all released passenger stats through May. CLE 1,963,962 YTD; -49.86% to LY 88,559 May; -90.24% to May'19 CVG 1,752,241 YTD; -50.43% to LY 84,986 May: -89.82% to May'19 CMH 1,717,301 YTD; -51.4% to LY 87,260 May; -89.1% to May'19 Ridership is obviously a tiny fraction of what it was before the lockdowns began, but it is definitely starting to pickup again. Ridership at each airport increased by 2X-3X from April to May. Anecdotal, but I flew down to TPA from CMH on Southwest last week, with a layover in ATL down and MDW back. Every plane I was on was a full as Southwest would allow. All window and aisle seats were full with all middle seats open. While sitting at ATL, I overheard an airport employee saying that the airport was the busiest it had been since before Covid. The only reason I had layovers was because Southwest had paused the CMH-TPA route; however, they started the route again this week with 2x daily flights between the cities. The route is increasing next week 3x daily flights. Note - The CMH figures above include passenger numbers from LCK because Allegiant flies out of LCK in Columbus while all other commercial flights are out of CMH. Below are a few interesting charts the Columbus Airport Authority has added to their monthly reporting. They do a great job of showing just had drastic ridership dropped. Hopefully this means they will be building the crane soon. Sometimes the bases gets installed but the crane isn't actually built for another month or two.

There are some old graves beneath the surface lot, correct? I'm assuming that will result in a great deal of intricate site prep work that will need done.

Some more good news on routes being added back at CMH. Last week, I flew to Tampa and back. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) there were no direct flights on Southwest between CMH and TPA. This week, it appears the CMH-TPA route is back with two daily flights between the cities during weekdays and three on weekends. I also did a few random searches on other direct routes that have been dropped since the shutdowns started. It likes United is adding their CMH-Houston route back next week with two daily flights. Also next week, United will be adding back the CMH-DEN route with a once daily flight on A320s, and will increase the route to twice daily in August. United is also planning to add back the CMH-SFO route in August, which is very good news. Also in August, United is adding back mainline service to ORD on A320s. It looks like Delta is increasing frequency on the CMH-ATL route this week, and starting in August they will be upgrading some of the flights from 717s to 737-900s. Also this week, the CMH-MSP route will increase from one daily flight to two, and by August it is planned to increase to four daily flights. CMH-LGA will be added back this week with two daily flights. In late September, it looks like the CMH-SLC route will be back using A319s. The CMH-LAX route on American appears to be available starting the second week of August. By the middle of August, American will be operating 4 daily flights on the CMH-DFW route using 737-800s. Currently, this route is only operating twice daily on an E175. The CMH-DCA route, which is currently operating once daily, appears to increase to four daily flights starting in the middle of August. The CMH-PHX route appears to be coming back on a once daily cadence in mid-August. It looks like Southwest will be adding the CMH-PHX route by mid-August, operating twice daily. It also appears Spirit will be adding the CMH-LAS daily route back starting this week. Obviously, these plans could be scrapped depending on what happens over the coming weeks, but these planned increases in service are promising.

According to my ticket rep last Friday, they are actually slightly ahead of schedule. The weather has been very good for construction since they got things underway.

I highly doubt this. It seems most of the growth we've seen since travel bottomed out has been due to vacation travel ticking up a bit. What we haven't seen, as far as I can tell, is business travel seeing any significant uptick similar to vacation travel. Without that business travel recovering, we will not hit that threshold.

cbussoccer replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIf we could get some 8+ story buildings on the surface lots in the foreground of that picture, it should hide the blank wall issue. But you are right, it's infuriating. I can't believe it was allowed to move forward.

Depending on the timing of things (assuming Market Tower does get built), I think we could see Market Tower getting started while this tower is wrapping up. It would definitely be cool to see.

Columbus: Random Development and News
cbussoccer replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI really don't like what is being proposed for the ground level of the 5/3 building. I love how classic the tower is right now, even down to the entrances, and I would had to see it modernized/sterilized.

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
cbussoccer replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThere's a lot of potential, and I hope they don't take the conservative route. This first group of buildings, while not bad, is fairly sterile. I really hope they can do something unique in the future phases. Especially on the northern portion between Vet's Memorial and Gravity. We could end up with a handful of blocks full of very interesting architecture if they build something similar to what they are showing in the renderings.

...and Hilton 2.0, the new Westminster-Thurber tower, Market Tower, Crew Stadium and surrounding development, etc. It's crazy how much the view from 670 has changed over the past decade.

cbussoccer replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIs that a new rendering? I know all of the buildings except for the 4 approved today are purely conceptual, but some of those taller buildings look very interesting and exciting.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Again, the Newark area is much too intertwined with Columbus to be an independent micropolitan statistical area. Zanesville, Chillicothe, Marion, etc. are all far enough away from Columbus to have their own regional pull. Places like Newark, Lancaster, or Marysville are much too close and intertwined with Columbus to have that type of pull. This is not an insult to Newark or Lancaster or anywhere else, it's just the way it is. Newark is also in a county that falls within the Columbus MSA. Zanesville, Chillicothe, etc. are all in counties that are not included in the Columbus MSA but are included in the CSA.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
There is more than just population of an area that is taken into account when defining MSAs. Commuting, economic, and social ties are all measured and taken into consideration. Newark (and Heath/Granville/Hebron/etc.) are all very much a part of the core Columbus area. A large percentage of people in the areas you are talking about regularly travel to Columbus for purposes of working, shopping, recreation, or traveling. If Newark was a couple hours away from Columbus, rather than a 35 minute drive, it could be its own MSA. But, because it is so close and so tied to Columbus, it will always be part of the Columbus MSA. I guess if the population of Newark area were to absolutely explode to like 400k, you could end up with a Columbus-Newark "metroplex", kind of like the DFW metroplex.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
It will remain part of the Columbus MSA. It will never be its own MSA.
