This year's tour has brought together new builds that have recently been finished, some that will be in progress, and some that you may be seeing for the first time. With something for everyone, whether you are new to Columbus, looking to move to Columbus, considering a change of scenery, or are simply interested in the rapid urban development happening in our city, you’ll enjoy this fun day of open houses in Columbus. The Urban Living Tour is a self-guided tour featuring living options in Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods. This year’s tour is Sunday, May 2, 2021 from 9 am – 5 pm. We will be assigning check-in locations to help spread guests out through the start of the day. By purchasing your ticket in advance, you will find out your check-in location closer to the day of the event. On Sunday, May 2, head to your designated check-in point to pick up your booklet (which also is your admission ticket for the event). NOTE: Day of Tickets are only on sale at The View on Grant at 350 Mt Vernon Ave, Columbus, OH 43215 between 9am and 3pm on Sunday, May 2. We will be following all COVID-19 protocols for staying safe. Masks are REQUIRED for all tour-goers over 6 years of age. Masks will be required to enter the tour stops and they will be required while you wait to enter. You will be required to practice social distancing at the properties, and will need to maintain 6 foot distancing from other parties outside of the properties. This may mean you will have to wait to enter the tour stops. Hand sanitizer will be available at each tour stop. Each person will need to purchase their own ticket for 2021 so we are able to contact all tour-goers if necessary. Thank you for your cooperation so we can make this event safe for all who attend. Residential stops on the Tour include: The Adelphi Quarter, 223 E Town, Grant Park, 150 N Third, High & Cherry, Luxe 23, The Nicholas, The View on Grant, Xander, The Julian, Apartments at the Yard featuring Brooks Building & Yard Club amenities, 620 E. 3rd by New City Homes, The Jacqueline, and The Seneca. Definitely a goal for next year! Perhaps they'll be doing some of the residential conversions by then? They only have those 2 units at the top of the building and they're kind of hard to get to (take 2 elevators to get there!). Or maybe we can just tour the new hotel inside it? ;) We definitely want some others that are under construction too, like The Atlas, 250 High, Jeffrey Park, The View on High, The View on Fifth, Fireproof, Battery B, Grant Commons and The LC Riversouth. Maybe we could also sneak a peek inside the Columbus Museum of Art expansion? Lots of great ideas for next time!

It seems like they did 70% of it very quickly in a week or two and then…. STAAAAAP!!

I think people (of all demographics) are much more willing to be "pioneers" (not a big fan of that word, but whatever) in moving into a run-down home in a run-down neighborhood and helping to improve things than they are to be a "pioneer" in a poor-performing school. There's a certain amount of appeal to fixing up neighborhoods, but getting involved in a school system that needs help is just a much harder task. No one wants to send their kids to a place where they're not confident they will get a good education. We weren't willing to do this with the neighborhood schools in our own neighborhood as they're some of the worst in the entire district. Instead, we picked a school that has a better place to start from, but still needs help from individuals, families and the community around it. Once that begins to improve, and there's a bit of a system/network of involved parents in place, it gets easier to add more people to the mix. That model seems to have worked well in Clintonville (the "Go Public" group) and a similar group is working in German/Merion Village ("South Side Stay"). We're still early in the process for 5th Avenue / Hubbard / Victorian Village, but I think we'll see rapid success once we start rallying some troops. ;) My wife put together an end-of-the-year party last year to thank all of the teachers, staff and parents and managed to raise over $7000 in cash and supplies from developers in the area and other community members and businesses. All the students and families were invited and everything was free (food, drinks, cotton candy, pony rides, magician, bounce houses, food trucks, Jeni's ice cream, games, prizes, etc). The look on some of the kids' faces when they learned that things were free (keep in mind that there are many from impoverished households) was priceless and amazing. We had around 1000 people attend that day over the course of 5 hours (a few photos, below). Speaking for myself… my wife and I have been a one-car household since we first started dating in 2001. She came to college (OSU) with no car, and I came to Columbus with one, so we immediately became a couple with one car between the two of us. Eventually we got married, bought a house and started having kids (two of em). And we've yet to find a reason to add another car. We've been pretty frequent bus riders for the past 6 or 7 years and often used it as our "secondary vehicle". We kind of gave up the bikes when our kids were born. Just didn't seem practical with a baby or two. When CoGo Bike Share launched last year I picked up a $75 annual membership and began using it. I found it fun to get back on a bike after a hiatus. After 3 months of that I figured it would be worthwhile to have an old bike in my basement tuned up and started riding it again too. And then last fall, car2go launched and we got a membership for that. So… we're not exactly car-free, but I'd say we're pretty "car-light". We only work a little over a mile from home, and most of our day-to-day activities occur within a 1 or 2 mile radius. It's nice to have our own car when we need to make a trip to Lowe's or Target for a bulk-buy, but it's also very easy to leave it parked in the driveway all week without ever needing it, which is often the case. It's definitely gotten easy to do that in recent years.

My son has attended Fifth Avenue International the past two years (Kindergarten and 1st Grade) and we've had a great experience there. The school was too small for the building because it was a K-8 school, and the relocated grades 7 and 8 to the International High School two years ago, leaving the third floor of the building unused. Go figure. This year it's moving to the Hubbard School building, which is smaller… almost a little too tight. The transition has been a roller coaster, as they've made some good changes (new Master learning program) some bad changes (firing all of the teachers and telling them they can re-apply for new jobs, and then only interviewing 2 of them out of around 40) and some weird changes (attempting to change to a NW region lottery instead of city-wide lottery, thus excluding many students from international backgrounds from applying — but we got them to change it back). My wife and I are getting very heavily involved in this school (she is on the PTA next year) and our daughter will be starting Pre-K there this year in addition to our 2nd grader son. We think it can become a model urban school in the heart of Victorian Village. Hopefully we can rally more support and create a sense of community pride, whereas currently most people in the inner city don't even know this school is an option. It doesn't score the best on standardized test, but we're looking to change that through tutoring assistance. On the flip side, they teach Mandarin Chinese to all grade levels and focus on training students to be good global citizens with a solid understand of all cultures, countries and people.

I'm the main event organizer for the Moonlight Market and I just wanted to say that it's gone really really well this year. We've been fortunate enough to have great weather every second Saturday so far, and the community has turned out in droves to support the sidewalk vendors, the retail trucks, and the brick-and-mortar businesses. Many of the businesses have told us that they're doing record sales days during the Moonlight Market now, and anticipate it as a great business day, just like shops in the Short North look forward to Gallery Hop. Further, we've been able to expand our boundaries a bit to stretch across Third to have vendors by Cafe Rendezvous and Latitude 41, and for July's MM we wrapped around High Street (in front of Cafe Napolitana and Phatt Taco) and into the pedestrian alley in front of the new Oliver's restaurant.
