Columbus: Restaurant News & Info
WalkerEvans replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI went to Banana Leaf once. Thought it was ok. But I don't know enough about South Indian food to know how they all compare. It's cheap enough though that I'd recommend at least trying it once and see what you think. ;)

Columbus: University District: South Campus Gateway
I'm 29. To this day I visit the South Campus Gateway for an occasional movie, food, or to hit a shop like Gamestop. If the area were still shitty dive bars... well... I can't say I'd ever set foot there. So from a purely selfish perspective, the South Campus Gateway works for me.

Parsons Avenue Part I: The Northern Half - Columbus
Methinks you give too much credit to newspapers. ;) But yeah, we've been giving the north side far too much love lately. ;) Time to make our way back down to the south side! :D

Parsons Avenue Part I: The Northern Half - Columbus
Meh. The boundaries seem to change with these neighborhoods depending on who is talking about them and what they're talking about. I'd hardly take any of these as being too "official". I mean... it's not like just anyone can grab a marker and draw some lines on a map and make a "neighborhood" right? It takes someone with a special designation to do be able to do that for real.

There ya go. Let the market dictate the demand. ;)

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
I don't know if they need to announce that they're phasing them all out. I imagine many alleys and alley-like streets will remain one way. As long as they keep plugging along and converting them (like they are doing with part of Front & Civic Center right now) then we're making progress. At the end of the day, the problem is money. When you add in all the beautification, these projects get expensive. The Gay Street project was $7.7 million dollars. And while it would be nice to see $100-200 million spent all at once to make all downtown streets two-way, there's no money right now to do that. Not to mention the fact that the city is bigger than just downtown. You've got to spend your capital dollars on improving the city EVERYWHERE. Not just Downtown. So yeah... no problem with taking it one step at a time. Enjoy the progress, and look forward to more. ;)

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Yes he does! ;) Yeah, I was a bit worried that the background noise would be a little too much, but I think it adds to the vibrant discussion! Urban life! City noise! Excitement! ;)

And a quick stroll down the sidewalk this morning reveals that even more is on the way. Right next door to Tip Top, in the window of a recently closed hair salon, there is now a “coming soon” sign for The Plantain Cafe. The sign doesn’t provide many details other than their slogan: A Taste of Cuba.

Looks like the two-way conversion is making an impact... four/five new businesses opening soon: From here: http://www.columbusunderground.com/several-new-businesses-coming-soon-to-gay-street Several New Businesses Coming Soon to Gay Street By Walker | July 4, 2009 1:25pm After the recent two-way streetscaping conversion, Gay Street quickly has become the gem of Downtown with new restaurants, businesses, and residences flocking to the area. And a quick stroll down the sidewalk this morning reveals that even more is on the way. We previously mentioned that J. Gumbo’s would be taking over the old Skambo space at 31 E. Gay Street, and a lot of progress has been made to the interior in the past few weeks. In the space next door, the Faithfully Yours Childcare service currently located in the back of the building is expanding around to the front retail space. One more unit down at 37 E. Gay Street also has a “coming soon” sign for a business called Shine Me Up, which will provide shoe repairs, footwear sales, foot massages, and some convenience store items. Right next door to Tip Top, in the window of a recently closed hair salon, there is now a “coming soon” sign for The Plantain Cafe. The sign doesn’t provide many details other than their slogan: A Taste of Cuba. And lastly, as a bit of a non-update, no progress appears to have been made on the space that was said a year ago to become a new Zen Cha Tea Salon. Not sure if it’s too early to consider that project abandoned, but I imagine with so many other spaces filling in that it won’t sit empty for too long. Now that Gay Street is filling in, should it be time to consider the next couple of Downtown streets for two-way streetscaping conversions? How about Main Street? Or Long Street? Or Fourth Street? Or the rest of Front Street? Bring on the renovations!

Columbus: Near East Side / King-Lincoln / Olde Towne East Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionMore great news for King Lincoln. I wonder if we can get this thread topic changed? It looks like it was originally titled about the NoBo development within the King Lincoln District, but has turned into discussion about the entire neighborhood.

WalkerEvans replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionDon't get me wrong... I'm all about providing a level playing field to multiple forms of transportation. I just think this area in particular is progressing nicely already with making dedicated space for bikes and scooters.

Parsons Avenue Part I: The Northern Half - Columbus
Funny that about a quarter of "South of Main" is actually north of main. ;) And I'm not 100% sure, but I'm willing to bet that there are no orchards in "Southern Orchards". Ridiculous to name a neighborhood with something that has zero significance, eh?

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionMaybe you weren't whining (this one time) but you were asking for something that is already happening as if you're 100% unaware of what is going on sometimes. It's tiring to read. Riversouth Transit Checklist: Less Auto Parking = CHECK More Bike Parking = CHECK More Scooter Parking = CHECK I know you'd love to see all auto parking 100% done away with and all highways demolished, but few share your extremist view, and sometimes you have to step down out of the clouds and live in reality. Otherwise, you're going to go through life complaining about EVERYTHING and you're far too young to already be a cranky old man. ;) Enjoy life. Things are good in this city. Take a breath. Stop complaining for a minute.

Columbus: Food Trucks News & Discussion
The point of the tour wasn't to hit every single taco truck in town. The point was to give people a sampling and allow them to try out four places in one evening and hop around. It would be hard to go to a dozen trucks in a row, even if you only got 1 taco per truck. :P

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI like the sign, and while ground floor retail in the garage would have been more optimal, I can't shed too many tears on the fact that we're getting a rebuilt functional garage (it had been closed and gated up for years) and replacing SEVERAL BLOCKS of flat lots next door with residential development. As far as the bike/scooter parking that Columbusite is whining about... there are ongoing projects that address both issues. Plenty of bike & scooter parking with more of both on the way.

I'm not a fan of forcing this type of change. We've added tons of new bike racks in the past 1.5 years. Why not keep going with the softer approach?

The building is quickly taking shape now that construction has started and many are excited to watch the progress on a more daily basis. We recently sat down with Brad Howe, a partner with Jackson Developer JBH Holdings, to discuss some of the finer details of this new iconic building in the Short North. Union County: Jerome Township Developments and News
I bet if you went back in time to 1970 and told the 600 residents in Dublin that in less than 40 years, their city would grow to 46 times its size, they'd call that far-fetched too. ;) Anyway, Dublin has their development plans on their website for anyone to view. These 3000 acres are planned to be annexed by the city and about half of it is planned to be developed as high-density high-tech office space. I think regional growth can be done in a smart way. I'm just not 100% sure if this collaboration is going to be as mutually beneficial to Columbus as it will be to Dublin.

They have been participating in the Italian Village community garden for a number of years. But this year, the plot was sold and no longer able to be used as a community garden. Rather than give up, they teamed up with 17 other households to create a new garden. It has been pretty successful so far for most of the households. You might even say there has been a smidge of garden envy going on. Read on to find out more about what they are growing and what their plot looks like.
