1. The High Ball is a cross between Carnivale and Mardi Gras with a pinch of Halloween and a healthy splash of the Short North's artistic spirit. The evening’s festivities will include Outrageous Costume Contests (all entries are welcome!), a Couture Costume Fashion Showdown for fashion professionals, the Dogtober Howloween Procession for costume-crazed pet owners, live bands, the city's hottest DJs and $5,000 in prizes! 2. Booya. I was asking it more rhetorically just as a way to lavish praise upon Columbus' Mike Brown. ;) The dude is awesome. He touches everything from bike racks to the Streetcar proposal to green initiatives to every other project aimed at making urban Columbus a great place to live. :D
3. This is huge news for Columbus. To see $250 million in private investment in downtown development during the current economic issues is highly impressive. I'm very excited about the new apartments and offices. I'm not too sure about the Giant Eagle anymore. I've heard some weirdness coming down the pipeline with how it's being pitched against the North Market, and it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I hope everything shakes out ok in the next few months.
4. Yeah, this program has been great so far. Awesome that the city is actively polling the public online to get feedback for stuff like this. A lot of hard work is being done by our Urban Coordinator Mike Brown. Do other cities even have an Urban Coordinator? :D
5. Sounds like a solid strategic move to me. Scenario 1 : Tenants get kicked out, City hands the building over to Artspace for next to nothing. Artspace ends up looking like the bad guys. Scenario 2 : Tenants get kicked out, public attention gets shifted to the fact that the building is on the verge of being torn down, Artspace sweeps in to save the day, renovate the building and keep a part of downtown history alive and well. I'm not a fan of these tenants being displaced so abruptly, but they had to have known something was coming. The plans for Artspace to revamp the building have not been secretive in the least.
6. Thanks in part to the massive feedback and suggestions submitted right here on Columbus Underground, the City of Columbus has managed to install 62 new bike racks in 24 locations around the city between July 24th and October 2nd. New locations include The South Campus Gateway, The Columbus Athletic Club, Studio 35, Café Corner, Café Apropos, The Surly Girl Saloon, Bodega, Claddah Irish Pub, Cornerstone Coffee, The One Columbus Building, Katzinger's Delicatessen, The Short North White Castle, B1 Bike Shop, Metro Gym, Voluneers of America, Barcelona, The Columbus Museum of Art, Four Points Real Estate, Town Street Properties, Urban Spirits Café, The COTA stop at Henderson & High, the corner of 9th and Indianola Avenues, Zettler Hardware, and at the corner of Cherry & Lazelle. There are also 11 more racks pending at locations near Café Bourbon Street, The Chamber of Commerce, Café Brioso, and The Convention Center. More suggestions are still needed though, as the City continues this program into 2009. In order to make the process as smooth as possible, some additional information is being requested with suggestions: 1. Business name and exact street address 2. Property owner and/or biz managers name and contact info The city can install in the Right of Way in front of businesses and sometimes dense housing (such as large apartment or condo buildings)… but helping commercial areas thrive is their top priority for the time being. You can post your suggestions directly here on Columbus Underground, or use 311 via phone or web to file a request. Thanks for all of the great suggestions! Keep them coming! Related Stories: - Need Suggestions for Urban Bike Rack Locations

8. Officials break ground for new emergency care center Wednesday, October 8, 2008 By EVAN BROOKS ThisWeek Staff Writer Officials from Canal Winchester, Violet Township and Fairfield County helped break ground last week for what one village council member called "the greatest thing to happen to Canal Winchester" in a long time. With silver shovels and speeches, officials marked the beginning of construction Sept. 30 of a full-service, 24-hour emergency center near U.S. 33 and Diley Road. The $35-million project is a joint venture between Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center. 11. Yes, I was just teasing. We're all in this situation together as Ohioans, no matter what city you live in. Our state needs to make some major improvements... <s>BRAWNDO</s> PRONTO.
12. I believe I read somewhere that the Boston metro area has the largest college-student per capita ratio with Columbus in second.
13. Just wanted to note that Columbus doesn't generally rank being the worst in any of those categories. The obvious solution to the problem is for the other cities to just "be more like Columbus". ;)
14. I'll probably be the one and only person to pick The KLD, but I have to since I live there. ;) It's slowly coming along. Will be really nice in another 10 years. :D

Actually, it sounds like Cincy is next for him to daydream about. It'll never happen. Anywhere.

Nice set. :D
17. I don't think the city would object to having new hotels built. Experience Columbus has been pushing for new Convention Center Hotel Developments for years now. I'm not sure where you're getting the "small town mentality" vibe? Perhaps you should be questioning the hotel developers who aren't building something here?
18. No one who lived in the Brewery District will miss it either. The place was a huge problem. Something better will fill its place and everyone will be better off.
19. When your landlord switches you over to a month-to-month lease it's usually a pretty good indicator that you need to start looking for a new place.
20. Wasn't sure if this was in here or not: Got some info about this new East-Side Condo Development via email yesterday (thanks Jessica!) called Sherman Oak Condominiums. This development was actually mentioned in a conversation on CU about two months ago. Good to see that they're still progressing well and that the final result sounds like it will be highly affordable. Units range between 820 sq ft and 1200 sq ft and run between $70k and $160k. Not too shabby. Here's a rendering from the website:
21. There were plenty there before prohibition. ;) Seriously though, the Brewery District is actually a pretty nice mix of residential and office space these days. Plenty of daytime activity and the growing number of condos and apartments in the area have really helped to keep it active in the evening as well. The new Kroger over there is one of the nicest grocery stores near downtown proper and is always busy. Sounds like some of the nightlife will be coming back soon, which should give this area an even better balance than before when it was a nightlife-only district.

Not helping the OP. But good job on being on the internet and all.
23. Anyone attend the opening event last night? I heard it was a blast!

Yep. It's a chain, but the only store in Ohio is in Columbus. ;) https://www.threedog.com/
