Columbus: Buckeye Building renovation into Marriott Residence Inn
These 126 rooms are going to add a lot of new foot traffic to Gay Street downtown, which will be awesome for the strip of businesses that have popped up there lately and should encourage more to be opening soon.

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionMy wife & I stopped by the grand opening of the new OSU Urban Arts Space in the old Lazarus building a few weeks ago. The first two exhibits to be showcased in this 10,000 square foot space are titled “Midnight Robbers: The Artists of Notting Hill Carnival” and “Linking the Past to the Future". The former is a show about the Notting Hill Carnival that features some photography from OSU students, and the latter is a historical look at the past, present, and future of the Lazarus building in downtown Columbus. Opening night was jam packed. I was told there were over 900 RSVPs to the event, with many people showing up sans RSVP as well. I'm glad they had such a huge turnout, but it did make it a little hard to really enjoy the space and see everything being displayed. I guess that just means we'll have to go back to have more time to ourselves. Overall I think this space is a welcome addition in the heart of downtown and I think it will nicely compliment a redeveloped City Center as well as potentially being a neighbor of the Artspace development (if they choose to locate in the Trautman Building a few doors down High Street). I'm looking forward to being a frequent visitor here.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThese additional hotel rooms in close proximity to the Convention Center should help them land more/larger conventions as well. Experience Columbus has been saying for awhile now that they've been turned down for many conventions due to our lack of close hotel space to the center.

King-Lincoln, Columbus
So, I've been in my new house in the King Lincoln District for a little over a month now, and we're loving it. Great location, nice neighbors (those that I've met so far) and a good sense of community from the one monthly neighborhood meeting I attended so far. Also, we just got a new coffee shop that opened this week on the corner of Long and 17th called Urban Spirit (http://www.urban-spirit.com). It's about 3 blocks east of the Lincoln Theater. I met the owner/entrepreneur and she's very nice. They get their coffee from Crimson Cup and also offer some sandwiches, salads, pastries, and other goodies. They did a great job renovating the place. Nice to have a new business in the area. Hopefully we'll see Long continue to turn back into the thriving retail corridor it once was. ;)

King-Lincoln, Columbus
I just realized that the house on the right of this picture is actually for sale here: http://www.kingthompson.com/Property/propertydetails.aspx?SearchID=364458&Property=BD68FEF7-EB4B-41B9-9B65-DE1105692E37&RowNum=9 2102 sqft historic brick home for $60,900 The interior photos look like it needs a bit of TLC, but mostly looks to be in great shape for that price.

King-Lincoln, Columbus
I just bought a home in this neighborhood and will be moving in next weekend. This is by far one of best spots in Columbus to invest in right now. Where else could we have found a mostly move-in ready historic brick home with walking accessibility (we're 1 mile from High Street and spitting distance to the Library, Museum of Art, CCAD, Topiary Park, etc) for a mere $39/sqft. And there's a ton of public and private development money surging into this neighborhood right now. You can actually see my new place in the fourth photo down on the far right. It's mostly obscured by tree branches. Dark red brick. I posted some details about the move here: http://walker.columbusunderground.com/?p=331 And if anyone is looking for what's available for sale in the area, I've posted more info up here: http://walker.columbusunderground.com/?p=353 http://walker.columbusunderground.com/?p=355 http://walker.columbusunderground.com/?p=356 http://walker.columbusunderground.com/?p=376

Columbus' "Short North" Ranks in Top 35 Best Neighborhoods to Retire
The Short North is full of expensive condos and restaurants. Don't old people just eat and sleep anyway? Sounds perfect if you ask me.

Huh? Drive for 20-30 minutes in any direction from Columbus and you'll find plenty of nature. We've got tons of parkland too.

Updated: A discussion on GLBT issues in Ohio (3C's)
Just wanted to throw some numbers around... I'm leaving out the yahoo stuff, since it seems as if it tops at 1000. So that makes: Columbus at 589 personals, Cincinnati at 833 personals, and Cleveland at 930 personals. Metro population stats seems to vary quite a bit depending on where the boundaries are drawn, so I just pulled them from one source on the net that had all three cities listed (unfortunately these are from 1996, so if anyone can update, please do so). Columbus has approx 1.5mil in the metro area, Cincy has 1.9 and Cleveland has 2.9. So that makes the ratios at: Columbus: 1 ad for every 2546 people Cincinnati: 1 ad for every 2280 people Cleveland: 1 ad for every 3118 people So that makes Columbus and Cincy very close, with Cleveland in third by quite a bit.

Columbus: Random Development and News
WalkerEvans replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI just happen to have a picture of this cluster of buildings from about a year ago (you'll have to pardon the fact that it's in black and white, I don't have the original color version due to some hard drive problems)...

Columbus: Clintonville Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI take dance classes at the Rawlin Studio just north of North Broadway and I noticed that some of the overhead lines through there (on the east side of the street) hang directly over some of those newly installed benches. I'm sure that once the summer rolls back around they'll probably get covered in bird crap pretty quickly. :(

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI've always thought it would be a good idea to build a tunnel over top of the train tracks through that area. My fiance used to live at the corner of Front and Frederick where the tracks are very close to Front street and the rumble of the trains were pretty loud even when the windows were closed (granted, she lived in an older place that lacked the sound proof insulation that could be used in new builds) but I know I wouldn't want to live that close to those tracks through there...

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI'm not sure about the height, but it should be just slightly bigger overall than their current building since it houses 775 workers and this new building will add 800 more, right?

Columbus: OSU / University Area Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI've not yet stopped in, but I've driven by quite a few times a different times of the day (and night) on different days of the week and the pedestrian traffic seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes there's a lot of people out, and other times the area look empty. I'm thinking once the rest of the stores (and the theater) opens it will stay busier more often than not. Is any of the office/housing actually in use yet? I wasn't sure if that was being leased out yet, because if not, that might explain the lack of crowds at times as well...

Columbus: Random Development and News
WalkerEvans replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionOof. Maybe it came from somewhere else. All I know is that the girlie clipped it out of some news source and stuck it on the fridge. I think it's a hint that she wants to go. ;)

Dubai: Developments and News
Dubai is insane. I've been reading about it for awhile now. It's like the Vegas of the Middle East x 1000.
