WalkerEvans replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI assume you meant priced-out gallery owners? Gallery owners and artists are generally two different groups of people. I agree that some group-effort could have a positive impact in creating another area, but it takes a lot of additional energy over just running your own gallery. It may seem "obvious" but really requires the right group of people and the right location.

<b>Businesses in Historic Dublin Work Together to Promote Prosperity</b> Regional Spotlight — By Melanie McIntyre on September 10, 2010 at 8:00 am <img src="http://www.themetropreneur.com/columbus/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/dublin-ohio-1.jpg"> Unlike several regional suburbs, Dublin has not neglected its original downtown. In fact, the Historic Dublin Business Association −made up of retail, professional, and service businesses− actively promotes economic growth in the historic district and works with city officials to ensure its members’ particular needs are met. We recently talked with HDBA president Eric Leslie, who has been involved with the association for three years, to discuss its inner workings, the issues of greatest importance to its membership, and how it drives traffic to the district, which is located along Bridge and High streets on the west side of the Scioto River. <b>Sources: Casino, City Annexation Negotiations 'Not Going Well'</b> By PATRICK PRESTON Published: October 06, 2010 Annexation negotiations between the City of Columbus and casino developer Penn National Gaming Inc. are not going well. Multiple sources tell NBC 4 that the two sides remain far apart with millions of dollars at stake for both parties. Penn National is aggressively exploring alternative ways to get water to the future casino site without joining the City of Columbus. The city provided water to the property when General Motors and later Delphi owned the property, but the city does not have records to indicate why the water was provided as far back as 1945 when General Motors bought the land. Mound Street, holds the distinction of being the oldest continually operating bar in Columbus. That tradition will continue as the bar transitions hands from Georgia Byrd to Elizabeth Lessner and Harold Larue today and joins the Betty’s Family of Restaurants. Lessner says that changes to the venue will be minimal. “The name has been the same since 1831,” she added. “We don’t want to upset the ghosts so we won’t be changing it!” READ MORE: http://www.columbusunderground.com/elizabeth-lessner-takes-over-the-jury-room

Columbus: Near East Side / King-Lincoln / Olde Towne East Developments and News
WalkerEvans replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWasn't it also up to the whim of developers to renovate those crumbling buildings in their current state? None of them were move-in ready for new retail tenants. They were all vacant and in need of hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs. Even the Alpha Building, that now houses Urban Spirit and The Book Loft was given a major major overhaul by owner and developer Peter Loscocco. It took someone with the money and determination to make it happen. And that just wasn't happening for any of those other buildings... which is sad but true. I'm willing to bet that development will occur on these lots faster over the next 5-10 years than it would have in buildings had they continued to sit empty and deteriorate. I'm a fan of historic preservation, and it was a shape to see certain buildings go... but the reality is that without private investment, there's really not a lot that can usually be done.

Columbus: Downtown: Highpoint / Columbus Commons
One of the biggest aesthetic elements of Schiller and Goodale are their large mature trees. It sounds like Commons doesn't have the physical capacity to support large trees. Personally, I hope that the park isn't too "successful" because I don't want anyone to be chaining themselves to bulldozers when it comes time to fill in park space with infill in another 5-10-15 years. If it's a semi-used grass lawn, then I think that's an ok temporary use of the space for the short term.
