  1. And consider the building that NIOSH is moving from, I think you are on the money, Travis. How many of the people who work for NIOSH walk to Terry's Turf Club or Bella Luna for lunch on any given day? Bad Tom Smith for happy hour? I'm guessing it is a very rare custom for these folks, but I could be totally wrong. I'd love to eat my words if someone knows better.
  2. Wow, I love how the brick from the mural was scattered to fill the infilled doors. Consider it Cincinnati Wabi Sabi. Seems like something Carlo Scarpa might do if he were still alive today. Another architectural word I'll throw out is "palimpsest", which is "something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form". In a way, this small move, much like the advertisement murals (ghost signs) from ages past, tell a story about how we live, how we change over time.
  3. Sounds like a great place for an airport to tennis court passenger rail to terminate.
  4. I had a dream last night that I was campaigning for Tamaya. I then stepped on a piece of glass. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
  5. Have you ever been to one of the NASA open houses? It's a really cool experience. They actually have two gravity wells, one which is "outside" in a tower down into the ravine, and another that's a big pit that they dug. One of my elementary school teachers had a husband who was an engineer at Glenn so we all got to go on a field trip one time and throw stuff down the hole in the name of science, which was pretty exciting. No, I've never been to one and I never knew anything about it but I'd love to go! He never told me about that. It just bewilders me that NASA has a big presence in Greater Cleveland and yet you never hear about it, even locally! That's awesome. Also, what is going on with the air base in Cleveland, along Lake Erie on the east side of town near the lake? I know that the Coast Guard has a presence for obvious reasons but when I checked into it by googling it, literally all I saw was that the Department of Defense operates that site? It can't just be a launch site for a spectacular air-show held in Cleveland every year, right? What is going on with the Department of Defense's site on the east side of Cleveland? I literally can't find anything through Google. These are Nike Missle Sites. There is one in Wilmington, where I am from originally, that has now been converted to the HQ for Clinton County's Developmental Disabilities programs. Here is a list of the sites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nike_missile_sites and the Wikipedia page on Project Nike: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Nike These missile sites would form circles around cities that were deemed targets following WWII. Scroll to the end of the Wikipedia article for some cool maps.
  6. There were a few cranes in Philly when I was living there last fall. Comcast, of course, and then the SCA tower in the Schuykill Yards development. Another project underway across the street from PSFS Building... I believe a 26 story condo tower. I'm interested in how the Schuykill Yards project moves forward. It is ambitious. But yeah... it's no Seattle, hah.
  7. Wasson Way grassroots effort began as early as 2011. Cranley started in office in 2013 It's either a 6.5, 7.6, or 8.9 mile trail depending on what source you look at (Facebook, WW website, and City of Cincinnati, respectively) Let's be careful to not sound like misinformed streetcar opponents.
  8. Wowza, never realized how shallow the units on the south side of Mercer were!
  9. SO happy to see that onramp from Central Parkway go! That was a dangerous spot for cyclists. Looking forward to that protected bike lane extending all the way to Ludlow, however, now after these months in Seattle and Portland... I wish they had been designed with north and south bound bike lanes on the same side of the street. Provides a much safer and accessible cycling environment.
  10. Small towns and cities in Ohio have been gripped by a sneaky form of globalization that is barely reported on. They're being wrung out.
  11. Jen and Leah (and their food) are awesome and while I'm sad to see them shut down the restaurant, I know they are doing this with as much intention as they started it. They both left positions as honors student advisors at UC to pursue this dream partly because they were so inspired by the things their students were doing.
  12. If you don't consider parking lots and 1-story chain developments* the highest and best use of the land in Clifton... there some tremendous redevelopment opportunities for the neighborhood. I feel like Clifton residents are justifiably worried that any new development will be geared towards students. Despite loving Clifton Market, their efforts, and the people involved, I guess I am outing myself as wishing there would have been an "everyone wins" option (typical millennial) where the Clifton Market crew would have been able to strike a deal with the folks who wanted to build a denser development on the site. *(and some relationship building to convince Ambar, Habanero, and Grill of India that they stand to benefit from increased density in the neighborhood)
  13. House Bill 523, effective on September 8, 2016, legalizes medical marijuana in Ohio. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program will allow people with certain medical conditions, upon the recommendation of an Ohio-licensed physician certified by the State Medical Board, to purchase and use medical marijuana. http://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/ There seems to be a few grow site projects across the state in the works, and I am just curious as to the level of competition to secure these grow licenses. Wilmington has both level-1 and level-2 grow sites in the works CannAscend Ohio, Level 1 facility http://cannascendohio.com/ Ancient Roots, Level 2 facility http://www.wnewsj.com/news/44908/a-second-medicinal-marijuana-growing-facility-proposed-for-wilmington Cincinnati has a level 1 facility in the works from the folks at Rhinegeist Nature's Apex, Level 1 http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2017/06/15/rhinegeist-co-founders-float-plan-for-large.html I look forward to discussing how this will impact the state's economy and how long before recreational marijuana is legal in the state.
  14. Love. Thank you for capturing. Yellowstone was a good distraction from not being in Cincinnati this summer to watch/be in the parade.
  15. Well, I, culturally speaking, do not hope that the Crew folds or moves to a new city. I do hope an intrastate rivalry emerges with two teams at the MLS level. Something as rich as Portland-Seattle but more potent because Cincinnati and Columbus are nearly twice as close. I hope each team emboldens and concentrates the local flavor of the places each represent in the way that soccer fans are able to pull up cultural obscurities and shine new light on historical, geological, local humor. Lukewarm Columbus fans are redoubling on their support for the Crew. Originally from Wilmington, smack dab between the two cities, I want both to succeed and I feel like the markets are big enough to support that success.
  16. Retweet. I would have way less issue with this if they would change the name. Is there anyone talking about resurrecting the original concept of MPMF under a new name? Add a lecture/talk/conference/film component.
  17. Two things 1) All of these projects are North of Liberty. I haven't been tracking them consciously, but I feel like OHTCs in OTR have never been exclusively North of Liberty 2) The 1900-1904 Vine St project will be transformative as a gateway... also home to what seems to be the longest stoplight in Cincinnati.
  18. I was scanning a few architects websites and stumbled upon a version of "One River Plaza" that I hadn't seen before, designed by John Senhauser, FAIA (the firm responsible for many homes in Mt. Adams and the new mid-rises on the east side of downtown). Their website only shows renderings of a building I've never seen... no information as to whether this was before or after Skyhouse. http://senhauserarchitects.com/oneriverplaza.html
  19. Loving the relationship between the pavement in Washington Park and the roof of Music Hall. I've never noticed that before... I am also not at drone height to make the connection.
  20. EDIT: Warmed it up a bit considering the lighting and that they are using a precast to mimic the limestone on surrounding buildings. I don't think the other developments along Main Street are visible from this vantage, so I didn't include them. However, I did include the Kingsley + Co./Anchor Properties proposal from the existing CMHA site. Had way less to go off of for that one, so it isn't as precise or clear. I can remove it for anyone's personal use for a small fee. ;)
  21. Its the perfect candidate for a rooftop garden/deck for a larger building behind and around it -OR- a complete façade-ectomy (which I am normally opposed to). Build another 5 to 10 above and around. I plan on sending my comments on the matter to the conservator today.
  22. I would like to know more about the east side of Bowen Alley. The site is ripe for a higher density development as well but it looks like this proposal is only suggesting low density loading use. I would pressure the developers to design the structure so that additional mixed use could be built above some day, a la FWW or those Senhauser condos on 8th Street. How is the HCB accepting comments for this?
  23. Hazen Alley is technically in between Findlay Market's parking lot and the lots on Elm Street.
  24. 'HELL IS REAL,' and so is FC Cincinnati's threat to Columbus Read more at https://www.fourfourtwo.com/us/features/hell-is-real-derby-fc-cincinnati-threat-columbus-crew-mls-usl#LBI902gwtGcRxAfP.99 "The Seattle-Portland rivalry might be the most coveted in American soccer, but this week showed two Midwestern clubs could have just as much fun." Been to many games in Seattle. Been to a game in Portland. I was very excited to read the above comparison. And it also made me want FCC to buy Nippert from UC so we can stay there.
  25. What is the mysteriously incomplete part of the City West/Laurel Homes development doing? I know it was used for Streetcar staging ground. If FCC goes with the above scheme 1 and Stargel is demolished. And if CPS cannot use an MLS stadium for their regular games and practices. Would it then make sense to build a CPS stadium on the unfinished part of City West/Laurel Homes lot bound by Ezzard Charles, Cutter, Clark, and John? A facility with track and field and maybe amenities for Hays Porter Elementary as well? That would make a nice campus between those CPS facilities.
