Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
The thing about this whole thread going off the rails here is that it's over the choice of one descriptive phrase, i.e. "East Clevelanders" - there is a decent chance that this one as innocent word choice meant to reflect people from a community more associated with crime than Garfield Hts. @X , though I also understand your comment as well in that it could very easily also be chosen as statistically the highest % of black residents of any Ohio city... Having said all that... let's agree on this... Groups of individuals with bad intentions have in the past, and continue to, destroy local community festivals that many of us remember attending. I think the fact that we've digressed into a pedantic argument about if a word choice was a dog whistle is reflective of our inability as a society to address this issue. Having said all that... let's keep it on topic and reset. @X , let's let @JB go and drop it. @JB remember that word choice on here isn't conversational - it's black and white on a computer screen and it's very easy to interpret what you said as targeting the poorest and most black city in the state for exactly that reason. No reason to keep bickering unless it's about proposed solutions to community policing for these events.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
My wife is in leadership at a large, Cleveland-based firm and has told some horror stories about GCP being blanket sycophants for anyone with large enough checkbooks or influence.

Anyone have any idea what the SWAT situation on the east side was this morning? Heard people talking about it at the store but didn't inquire further

FWIW, I live in Broadview Heights and people have been THRILLED with VA thus far.

I'll be honest... I'm shocked they're still open. Hope they pick up more significant traction, because I really like their food.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
I don't disagree with you in principle, @KJP and in some ways I'm still very bummed about moving to suburbia... but I've actually been shocked at my cost of living here... I know this is anecdotal and not data (and I'm not arguing that the data wouldn't support your position), but the only cost that's went up for me is my mortgage. Though, again, I'm sacrificing convenience in that I'm really only able to walk to the nearest commercial business district April - October, whereas I could previously walk year-round. These are just some selected points to highlight my position - again, not arguing with your overall point, though. Gym Ohio City: $94/mo Broadview Hts: $27/mo rec center ($7 to add my wife) Transportation Ohio City: Gas + RTA passes ~ $175/mo Broadview Hts: Gas ~ $150/mo Groceries Same at both - loyal Aldi and WSM family Utilities About 8% more in Broadview Heights in total Children's activities (daycare, classes, leagues, etc.) Down about 14% YOY despite my daughter joining 2 new activities.

Dubai: Developments and News
I was in Dubai for 36 hours following a convention - I didn't take any pictures... but it's an absolute disgrace... So much innovative building and lofty designs for skyscrapers - but almost NONE of them connect with the streets below. It's a density dream with absolutely no multi-modal transportation infrastructure. I walked from my hotel to get dinner, and dodged cars the entire way.

UO Fam - I have a major request I would like help with, and I feel like some of you here who are GIS-proficient may be best suited to help me. I set a goal for myself to hike every inch of trail in CVNP by the end of September 2025. While I've already done most of the Towtrail, I am having trouble 1) Tracking the full scope of trails and 2) assigning mileage appropriately (I would like to be able to plan distance accordingly). My initial thought is that this will likely include hundreds of miles in total, and I may be in over my head - nonetheless, I'd really like to do this. If anyone is able to lend a hand at all, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
I've been to a match at Loftus Road when Spurs played them (pre-covid)... I've never felt more "on top" of the game in my life... I was probably 20 feet above the pitch, but only 15 or 16 feet away from it

And then there's 9,500 seat Luton Town who were just relegates last year, who literally had an entry gate to a stand through a residential block

Thank you - I agree. They're trying to be passive about it for now but I'm confident it's eventually going to come to a head.

Maybe not the right thread for this grievance - but it took MASSIVE investment in MLS to get it ranked above the English Championship (finally) in leagues overall - I'm not sure a USL pyramid, even with its unique categorizations, will have a top flight even competitive with MLS. It may have its shot in some CONCACAF and domestic cup tournaments, but we'll see. The most fundamental issue with MLS has also been its refusal to adopt FIFA's standard schedule - if USL is willing to do that, it may help

I honestly don't know if this is the right thread for this - and was torn between this, housing and "random quick questions", so one of my fellow mods can move me if so... But in short, I have a friend who lives in a home in Ohio City. In front of their home is a man who parks both of his identical cars every day. One car is apparently always stationary, while he sometimes drives the other, though not frequently. One car appears to have all of his clothes and belongings (or at least a lot of them), and he also appears to sleep in this car very frequently (if not always). Having said that, our friends aren't thrilled with a stranger effectively becoming a permanent tenant on their tree lawn (the one vehicle has a strong odor associated with it as well). They've asked him politely (while bringing him cookies and raisin bread) if he'd consider moving the cars elsewhere - he informed them that he's been there longer than they've occupied the house (which is true). I know I'm a lawyer, but I can't think of any legal recourse my friends have to try to get this guy to move elsewhere. Is there anything you think I'm missing?

Right - I meant to top flight. Relegation/promotion is only worth so much if there isn't an aspiration to the top
