I've heard from everyone that if I leave a garden open without any sort of fencing, the deer will take everything.
  2. Don't forget the HOA fees!!! IMO, though, this was the best home to hit the market on the near west side in a long time. Beautifully appointed and well-laid out... also 3,000+ SF.

First year in the 'burbs. What kind of deer fence do I need? My backyard abuts some woods and we frequently get deer.
  4. Just heard from a friend at HSG who sent a text: "They still want Brook Park, but their spine is substantially less stiff than it was in January."
  5. Think that's due to increased staffing or other factors?
  6. FWIW crime is down under Bibb and he's hiring cops. I think he just disagrees with you about how to improve.
  7. Have you read any Robert Putnam? A couple of his books speak to your point exceptionally well. And I tend to agree, geography is much less of a controlling factor than socioeconomic conditions. Especially in the rust belt.
  8. Agreed - makes me so sad. It's honestly shocking how persistent this has been in this area, given how beautiful the homes/apartments are and how active the streets are. I have a former colleague that lived at the new apartments at Station 73 and he had his car broken into 4x - the windows being smashed 3x, despite leaving the doors open - his partner had his car stolen twice in an 8 month period. They've stayed in the neighborhood, which is excellent, but the building just let them walk from their lease due to these issues. While we experienced no where near this level of petty crime, this was the issue my wife and I faced before we left. It became increasingly difficult to rationalize raising children (and allowing them to roam freely in yards, etc. and be independent), when opportunity crime and - at times violent crime - were not uncommon in areas immediately adjacent to us. We DID. NOT. WANT. TO. LEAVE. But we did. There already ARE cameras almost everywhere in DS and OC. There needs to be a more visible presence on the street that's willing to take steps to interfere with this kind of activity - and that's really not fair to ask of everyday citizens. Clearly cameras and "watch and report" security have done very little to stem this. Having said all that, I think there are members of the community in DS, particularly in BP, that will put their heart into addressing this problem. It's a wonderful community - and it's certainly worth fighting for. Hopefully continued development, density, and an increased community presence will address this.
  9. In theory - I love the idea. In practice, I have almost no confidence in the county's ability to achieve a long term conversion there. In particular, the security apparatus for transport from the jail to courtrooms would be a costly reconfiguration, and my gut tells me the county would sacrifice function and flow in any conversion attempt. Having said that, I'd rather let you rip off my finger nails than ever have to step foot in the current justice center again
  10. Friend of mine tells me there was just a shooting in front of the Ohio City Deli at 52nd and Franklin this afternoon. At least 5 shots fired between someone in the parking lot and a fleeing vehicle. Very scary situation, and I know several young families that walk by there regularly
  11. Yeah - if there was a part of the city that might be flirting with the socioeconomic conditions needed, it would be OC/DS
  12. My dad and I were frequent flyers at Tal's when I was a kid

She said she is wholly unfamiliar with any of the implementation of government. She'd vote for Acton over Vivek if it came to that, but said her lack of experience would be more harmful to Ohio than the areas where she thinks Yost falls short.

I know a local mayor in Cleveland who's staunchly democrat who said she'd rather vote for Yost to Acton - she's met with Acton twice and is wildly discouraged. Having said that, I think Sherrod Brown would be a great alternative. Again, it all depends on if the 3 C's actually show up
  15. I forgot they have a picture of Bobby Sands behind the bar. One of the few bars in town with solid links back to the old country. I remember being in high school around 2006-2007, and a group of my friends met at the Flat Iron after practice to get wings and watch a Cavs game, and there was a RIRA/NORAID collection basket on the bar, with a man from Derry there to encourage donations.
  16. I get quarterly incentive bonus and then a year end bonus in early March of every year
  17. My main concern are my bonuses. They're only taxed at 20% so I've been trying some voodoo to do the appropriate withholding each quarter
  18. W2, but my firm is based in Philadelphia. I don't yet have an equity stake.
  19. Question for the more financially literate in the group... We've been blessed in the last few years to increase our household income considerably, and I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to taxes - and a family friend of ours still does ours on the side. I've heard from a few people that I should start filing taxes quarterly and likely engage CPA firm to handle. Does anyone have 1) any idea of that's actually correct, and 2) an explanation of the potential benefits of filing quarterly? Please explain as if I'm a golden retriever.
  20. As a moderator I'm stepping in to flag this as hate speech.
  21. Maybe a dumb question, but what were the typical occupants of spaces on the 3rd and 4th floors?

Yes - the 3 C's just have to show up
  23. If anyone has an opportunity to go to St. Elizabeth, the catholic church in the neighborhood founded by Hungarians... it's breathtaking. To this day they offer a Hungarian service.

Found myself driving through Southeast Ohio over the weekend, and made it a leisurely drive home - stopping in several towns along the way. I think we don't appreciate enough how truly beautiful and unique Southeast Ohio is. I felt Thoreau and Emerson flowing through my veins each and every mile of the way
