Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I think you raise some fair points. But gentrification as a four-letter word really just doesn't happen in Cleveland the way it does in Chicago, NY, Boston, or Denver. Even the most premier streets in Ohio City, Tremont, and Detroit Shoreway have mixed socioeconomic households. More people makes the neighborhood safer and will lead to more sustainable development and walkable jobs. As an anecdote, my street has doctors, lawyers, an investment banker, and also teachers, a sanitation worker, and a family across the street with no employment history to speak of. That mix, in part, is what makes our community a special place, in my opinion. I'm all for protecting existing residents - but projecting fear can't come in the way of progress. I also tried to take a devil's advocate approach to this, and can't think of a single project since my time on this forum that's been given the go-ahead and was a net negative for the adjacent neighborhood. You could argue maybe Church and State, but I think that's a stretch and has added real density to Hingetown that's accelerated investment.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I don't get the speeding rationale... Is it "Hey honey, new construction, better punch it to 80 MPH!" or "Wow, there are a lot more people around here than there used to be, better gun it!" ????

Cleveland: Ohio City: Irishtown Bend Park
Don't forget - if anyone has a heart attack, broken bone, stroke, bee sting, cut, abrasion, hemorrhage, or any other ailment while at the park, they can walk right up to Bobby George's decaying structure up the hill and sample some bone broth from the springs at Lourdes and be instantly cured.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I'm not sure why, but this morning in particular this got my blood boiling. Are people not aware that Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway had previously been FILLED with not only dense, multi-family housing, but also double-occupied parcels? At that time, Detroit Shoreway had a BOOMING retail scene, with trolley service, and West 25th also had a robust central business district, only a mile apart from each other. We will never get the development we want and more thriving business districts until we have more population density. With that density will come demand for transit, demand for better schools, demand for walkable groceries and retail options, multi-modal pathways for bikes and scooters. My Grandpa grew up 1 of 9 children in a home on West 61st and talked about the fabric of the neighborhood and its vibrancy until the day he died. My dad said it always broke his heart to see buildings come down that were formerly occupied. I'm really thankful we have Kerry McCormack and not Jenny Spencer - because she seems wholly committed to preserving the status quo whenever it may ruffle enough feathers to threaten her seat. End rant.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Irishtown Bend Park
From my - albeit limited - experience with construction (worked concrete 7 years through HS and college summers), any vegetation, including grass, will actually do a very good job stabilizing a slope and assisting with drainage. I think there are still a lot of roots in the ground, and those should hold over until they're able to grade the slope again and get grass throughout.

Cleveland as a college town
In his biography, this is discussed at length. John D. Rockefeller, for all of his faults, was definitely a man of conviction. Part of the problem, in his assessment, was that the local leaders in Cleveland wouldn't steward the university in the way it needed, and that he'd have to bail them out to save face. Ironically, that's ultimately what happened in Chicago. As an aside, JDR is also the reason for the existence of several HBCU's with his contributions not being made public until after his death - save the instance of Spellman.

Beyond that - as some of the arrests last year suggested - a number of the riders came to Cleveland from neighboring states solely for this purpose

Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
I'm not sure, but you can see it clearly from 176 and 490. I wish I knew the technical names, but in short, two of the taller (rusted) structures on the Cliffs Steelyard campus are being replaced with blue structures.

Honestly, the capital improvements to the steel plants are enough for me. I don't know how many cities in the country right now can say that they have cranes in the air to revamp an 80 year old steel mill, and that's pretty cool

Cleveland as a college town
I think they could have taken the route of Fordham, though. Fordham is bigger, no doubt, but developed their business and law schools while also maintaining division 1 athletics. Athletics are a cornerstone of the Jesuit educational experience, too, so support from the Order never would've been a problem.

Cleveland as a college town
People may laugh - but John Carroll should have never went to Division III in sports. A D1 athletic program would change the perception of the school and really help in this instance

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Lol yeah - that’s a STRETCH. To say the least.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Right. I can proudly say my friend was just promoted within the Bears organization, this time under new leadership, and he's proven to know what he's talking about to people across the league. Last summer, the Bears offered the Seahawks 4 first rounders and Kyle Fuller to the Seahawks for Russel Wilson. They even had Michael Jordan make a personal appearance at Russel Wilson's house to pitch him on the city of Chicago. The Seahawks still declined that offer, then ended up settling for far less. Top 10 QBs are franchise changing, and unless you get one in the draft, you're willing to give everything for a good one.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
Bingo, and honestly - it would help to have something worthwhile to fill in such a substantial portion of the footprint.

Ohio General Assembly
If it weren't for the 3 C's the whole state could be a strip mall, @KJP - so it's hard to blame them for feeling that way!

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
Agreed - I'd like to see 5,000 - 6,000 per class. However, here's a more important indicator: Number of students living on/adjacent to campus in 2009: 900. Number of students living on/adjacent to campus in 2022: 3,800. Projected number for 2025: 5,000.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Lol he did. Again, I'm against the signing - but the Browns offense is absolutely elite with him. An ESPN pre-season power ranking isn't exactly an iron clad prediction machine. The same had the Bengals at 29, the Pats at 19, the Chargers at 17, and the Seahawks at 8. I think I've shared this story, but when I asked my buddy what his front office would've given up for Deshaun Watson (baggage included), he said 3 first rounders, without a doubt. Again, the baggage is an unpredictable variable, but Deshaun Watson is an elite, Super Bowl level quarterback.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
I thought the First Tee Academy was an incredible idea.
-
Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
I’d be comfortable with it if the Metroparks were involved in some capacity. But supposedly it would still leave something about nearly half of the current footprint for development. And to the point above - the idea would be for a links style course, similar to the British Isle and Whispering Straits in Wisconsin

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
I heard a story that I think everyone will find interesting... A friend of mine was at dinner with a group of people last week, one of whom discussed how there is currently a world-renowned golf course developer who is infatuated with Burke. His long term vision is to develop a championship-level golf course on the Eastern portion of the parcel, with the prospect of attracting PGA events to the venue, including majors. Supposedly, he'd like to develop a "First Tee" flagship charter school on the site as well, where kids of modest means could go to school ages K-8 during the day, and then will have a daily training session in the afternoon, with the cost of golf and transportation being funded through the academy. No info into the remainder of the space, but I thought that was a really cool idea. And, if developed, would be one of the most unique courses in the world. Again, I know a developer's pipe dream seldom turns into reality, but just thought I'd share.

This seems like it tees up some avenues to abuse due process and probablyyyyyyyy a 4th Amendment violation

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The thing that was most shocking/scary/infuriating was the way the bus just veered across the lane to get to each stop. A middle-aged women in front of me was literally forced to the curb by the bus and then walked it up the sidewalk and back onto the street.
