I belong to Tremont Athletic Club, whose parking lot is directly across the street from these in the old Fairmont Creamery building - that corner is active when the gym is active, other than that, not so much - there used to be a pizza shop at an adjacent corner, but that has closed in recent years. The APA and TAC are the only thing going on in that enclave.

This raises an interesting proposition, @KJP, and one I think worth addressing. I read Yuval Noah Harari's new book "21 Lessons for the 21st Century" recently, and he raises some good points... First, as automation begins to replace laborers, new careers will actually emerge from that. One example he offered is unmanned aircraft. Where in the past, you could use a pilot to fly over combat areas to take photos and video, then use a team of about 12-15 to dissect the pictures - now we have unmanned aircraft that require teams of 15-20 to fly, and an additional 30-40 personnel to capture and analyze the photos. However, these residual jobs are usually reserved for people who are already highly trained. So, we get confronted with the fact that unskilled workers may be replaced by new technology every 5-15 years, which would require several career changes and, to be frank, probably a feeling of exasperation from these laborers. I see areas in energy efficiency and coding as a new major sector of "blue collar" workers - neither should require a college degree and both will be evolving fields for at least the next 30-40 years. Beyond that, 78% of Cleveland's minority children are born to single parents - this is likely a vicious cycle caused by the lack of economic and educational opportunities and will only continue to worsen until we pay attention to our poorest neighborhoods in a way that isn't a band-aid. That means local government incentivizing private investments in these neighborhoods. Unfortunately, that will always lead to displacement in some instances - but I believe it's an ends justify the means situation. Moreover, we need to demand that our local companies hire locally - even if that just means kids from Case, JCU, BWU, Hiram, Oberlin, Cleveland State, and Tri-C or even certain career centers, keeping students in Cleveland as professionals is critical.

Expect a sizable insurance co. with a presence downtown to announce significant layoffs in the coming weeks. Pretty bummed to hear about this one.

Dear Lordy - The purpose of my hypothetical is not to shift blame @freefourur, because I don't believe any blame needs shifted with regards to the ad, Gillette nailed it. Also, the point wasn't to air our grievances with women's culpability in the situations named @Brutus_buckeye... Guys, the purpose of it was just to attempt to delineate why some qualities are deemed toxic in one sex and don't seem to be addressed with others. @jam40jeff provided a cogent and perhaps perfect response to my first part of the hypo, thus rendering it void, and I was genuinely excited to share that with my fiance tonight as the discussion will definitely come up again. Discussion in itself isn't toxic, and I think people are getting offended that we would even entertain a discussion that would raise a couple of these questions.

This is spot on too. I venture to guess a Gillette ad airing in Latin America suggesting it is irresponsible to bring your children on long journeys would have went viral with the MAGA crowd.

My fiance does at well. Works in PHS and she says guys lick their lips at her at the bus stop. She dresses business professional everyday. You're missing my overall point though, which isn't to shift blame anywhere.

Okay, I guess my question would be this then (and it will rely on the premise that clothing makes a statement): Based on the hypothetical example I provided, what portion of that would be based on an unfair criticism of women? I love @jam40jeff's response to the "leaving the party" portion re: doing harm to herself - I think he wins that point clearly. But as to the other two hypos, why are those not considered "toxic" qualities, ESPECIALLY the final example. I was fortunate enough to have supporting and encouraging parents, but I'd imagine that such comments do a particularly significant amount of damage to little boys without support at home.

The fact that you're unwilling to have a normal conversation about any other side of the coin seems a bit unusual for you

Because I'm addressing a hypothetical situation re: a not real commercial. Men could have the same issues of dress. In fact, the way many urban men dress causes them significant and typically unjust problems. But again, clothing doesn't make outward statements.

It's not shifting. Clothing makes a statement. Why don't actresses in adult films where Canada Goose Jackets with sweat pants and a baseball hat

Point being. clothes carry messages. Again, I'm playing devil's advocate here but I think this is a really interesting point... Both of these carry a message.

So, my fiance and I had a great discussion about the Gillette Ad last night... we raised both the pros and cons and also came to the conclusion that ultimately people were too worked up over it... My fiance is liberal, and although we agree on some policy points, we pretty much disagree across the board lol.. .and she made this devil's advocate point that stuck with me... What if this Gillette Ad had, instead, been a Venus ad. Within the Venus ad, what if it portrayed women getting too drunk at parties and walking home alone; what if there was a cut of a woman in a scantily clad outfit, with a friend that walks up to her and says "c'mon, what does that outfit say about you?"; what if there were two girls teasing a little boy about the way he looks and the adults go "she must have a crush on him, funny how that works" Both ads would cut at the same issue, but it does seem that one side is available to criticism, while the other side is not. Again, this was during a "devil's advocate" sort of discussion, but I think this is a hypothetical scenario worth exploring.

When I played football at St. Ignatius, during two-a-days, Great Lakes would always be brewing, and the distinct smell of what I assume is hops would overtake the field. That smell will forever be associated with running until I'm ragged, and everytime I smell it, I'm taken back to high school two a days. Also, going over the 490 bridge at certain points in the day and catching the eggy smell from the steel plant - my fiance always blames me for farting, despite the fact that I've explained it to her a dozen times. PRO TIP: 490 Bridge is a good place to fart and blame it on the steel mill.
