Cincinnati: Uptown: Stratford Heights
I too am a member of the Greek community. We have grown accustomed to the restrictions (which are basically just, your party has to be cleaned up by 1-2 the next day, not too tough) other than that, no restrictions. secondly. Our house holds 36 beds...there are very few Greek houses that are larger than that. We don't have to collect rent either, Stratford does that for us (one less thing to worry about). Recruitment is up, bills are down (not having to deal with leaky pipes/expensive utilities lets us save money), we still have had a great time, there is a bar across from my house :-D overall i am glad we made the decision to move in Stratford Heights....iu can see why some houses may not want to move in though...my rent is 400 after a scholarship that basically everyone who lives in the house gets...that's not that bad, for a new 1.5 million dollar house.....as for the smell....they had a sewage problem early on...ithe "smell" hasn't been back since early december

Conventions
The important thing to realize, especially for these two events in particular is that they are 4-5 day events. We had brought up earlier, in that article, that most people are only staying, on average, one day in their respected cities. For these events, people are staying the entire time. . . . lots of money :)

i wasn't saying you were wrong MayDay...sorry if it came off that way. Thanks for the post. I just was asking what kinds of benifits do you get from conventions. i understand the hotel thing but i guess the question i am asking is, are cities making a return on their investments, not directly necessarily, but are businesses gaining enough in order to fund some of these projects, or is the bubble about to burst?

Why would these cities want these large convention centers then. There must be some sort of economic fruition that you don't know about...

Conventions
Cities are spending billions of dollars on their convention centers. They are fighting to attract business and all kinds of organizational conventions. I just got back from a fraternity convention in San Antonio. At this convention the executive committee, which i am apart of, selected where we are going to have our 2008,2010,and 2012 National General assembly. We selected Phoenix. for all three. Now here are our reasons. : They were giving us a deal: 1. We would pay a flat rate for all three years if we decided on them. 2. their hotels and convention space was TOP of the line 3. They offered many other small things like, free tickets to baseball games and our president throwing out the opening pitch. I saw NO Ohio city on the list of possibly places that had submitted requests. Apparently many cities are making much more money by spending much more money on attracting these large conventions. What kind of tools are Ohio cities lacking to attract some of these conventions??? i know that cincy, Cleveland, and c-bus get the occasional big convention, but what makes a city a "convention HUB" cities like Orlando, Phoenix, Indy seem to come to mind?? Please discuss what kinds of changes, or what programs ARE, or should be in place to help Ohio cities develop a more competitive convention base...

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
I was down on the square last night. We had dinner at Rock Bottom, then walked around downtown for a while. Most of the people i was with found downtown pretty cool. A couple of them thought the big screen was neat but there was nothing on it, just a whole bunch of ads. Also the square is pretty small until everything is completed. It looks like A LOT of work still needs to be done. All in all, a wonderful night on the new square. P.S. i would have gone ice skating (girls LOVE ice skating) but they closed at 7 o'clock on sunday's which was slightly unexpected. I'll take her there sometime this month.

Cincinnati: Delhi Pike
Why would the City of Cincinnati want to annex this bedroom community? There is little tax base (clearly), all they are gaining is population...what good is just population gain, without taxes?

Cincinnati: Green Twp - Legacy Place
I have heard rumors that Green Twp. is going to use the existing R.O.W. between Veterans park/ Nathaniel Greene Lodge and the new Legacy Park and have bike paths and provide connections through the 2 parks...if this happens....i would support the proposed plan. Connectivity through the parks would definetely be a +. So you would not have to park at Legacy to get there, you could walk/run/bike through the new green connector.

Dayton: Vandalia - 200 acre mixed use project
Hoagland is truly a class act. This is his first year on the job as city manager and he is really stepping it up....go V-town. I really hope that they can find some way to take advantage to the proximity (can't actually get ANY closer) to the airport. I have also heard that they are exploring the possibility of putting another exit along the access road... My inner-ring suburb needs some work and i am glad that someone is planning for the future.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
After viewing how the screen fits into the context of the square/surrounding buildings/Macy's, it just seems too small. I don't think that you will be able to se it well from many portions of the square. Raising it up above the "notch", allows for it to be seen above the trees that are to be planted. But, i hope that they do something below the screen. If it stays the way it is i will be very disappointed. Hopefully they do something cool under the scree (i.e. news/stock tickers/ small advertisements/ branding image/ similar banners that will go on the 5/3 building. I just hope they cover up the beams somehow. Also, UncleRando, we expected something like the stadiums because that is how the screen was described many times. It seems as though everytime 3CDC talked about the screen they compared it to the reds/bengals stadium. Also, the rendering showed a MUCH larger screen.
