Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I was never a fan of the "what doesn't kill the organization will only make it stronger" management philosophy.

Green = Good Yellow = Slow Red = Bad They are also directional, hence the two stripes for each highway.

Peak Oil
Here's an eye-opening graph from the Dept. of Energy. To think that we haven't had the "Katrina effect" to blame (should free up more gulf production), saw record prices last year (should have killed some demand), and investments in refineries, and drilling has been through the roof (should be paying off). It's all very counterintuitive when you look at the chart, isn't it! Could be a fun summer!

Yeah...when I say updated, I mean they updated Columbus from 2002 to 2004. A lot has gone on since then.

Columbus was also updated a few weeks ago with higher res images and traffic.

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
I'm completely in agreement with both of you guys about the functionality of the building (minus the skywalk). I love the density and connection to street level. Lose the pink stucco and the tropical artwork in favor of red brick or something more traditional, and I'm happy.

I'm looking at my last electric bill and calculate that I used 0.239 kWh/sqft last month...and that was one of my highest bills in awhile. So he uses 6 times as much per sq. ft. and has 7 times as many sq. ft.

I don't think we should be recreating the worst of what we built in the past. So why not put one in the most appropriate setting...German Village. Why put red brick buildings in Grandview and the SN, but put a big tropical pink casino in German Village. Because variety is good in a historic neighborhood? That's probably what the highway designers said when they built the 70/71 split. I don't understand why you would build anything but "great quality infill" everywhere. Why settle? It's not like the site is in the middle of a desolate surface lot. Don't get me wrong, I love that it's an 8 story building. But this is really going to be a laughing stock, and I don't want to live anywhere near it. If it didn't violate copyrights I'd scan in a larger image so everyone could appreciate it's crappyness.

OK...so I got the dispatch in print today and it's even worse when you see a 6"x6" picture of the thing. It really is pink which you can see contrasted with the two story german village brick house on the left of the picture. The "art" looks more like something on a fruit loops box. It screamed "toucan sam"! The torch looked out of place. The roof looks like it's copper. Worst of all...the article mentions a "crosswalk" to the new Grange building. I think this actually meant "skywalk". It actually shows up in the photo on the lower right side (look at the blue protrusion). Why would we want to take pedestrians off the street and close in High St. with another dreaded skywalk? I feel like this is all a bad joke.

I don't get it...why would a single family live in a skyscraper? You need to work on your analogies. My whole point is...don't preach what others should do, and then live in a MANSION!

So what fundamental difference is there between Al Gore (a human) and me (also a human). We both consume energy...he just consumes much, much more.

So the architect is based in German Village but specializes in Correctional Facilities, Manufacturing, and Single Family Residential design. It makes a little more sense now. http://www.architectureweek.com/directory/firms.cgi?14512 And I have no idea what this means...

The point is that he could be doing a lot to reduce his $30,000/year electric bill. I don't care how big your house is...nobody needs that much energy. Hell, why doesn't he just close off a couple wings of his mansion and close the heater vents? That could probably shave off $5,000/year. It's no different than driving a Hummer. Does anyone need a house or car that big? Should he be preaching about conservation when his footprint is the size of 30 of mine? I don't care if he's buying green energy...he's adding to the overall energy demand.

I'm not asking for gingerbread houses. How about we take The Heights in grandview and cover it in red brick? I'm not asking for much. Just don't drop in a building that looks like a hotel from St. Petersburg, Fl.

Idunno...Pizzuti is developing it (Miranova), and the DesignGroup is the architect. They're known for green architecture and have a really nice portfolio... http://www.dgcolumbus.com/news.php?display=119#119

I know what you mean about the Clarmont being hideous, but this site is a main bridge between the Brewery District and German Village. It would be nice if they at least stole one design concept from the surrounding area!!! I need to go track down a copy of today's Dispatch.

Munich parking garage
Carlyle's Watch, a condo development on 3rd and Gay in Columbus, is using one of these systems. I just saw it a few weeks ago. http://carlyleswatch.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=47&Itemid=50 You just pull up into the stall, punch in your code, and your car either goes up or down. Each parking stall holds three cars.

What is everyone's interpretation of that rendering. Are those small windows, or balconies? Is that ivy growing up the side, or artwork? Is the outside pink stucco?

Still no renderings of the new courthouse, eh? I'm anxious to see that one!

Columbus: Restaurant News & Info
Brewmaster replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentLiving just down the street from CBC, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on their brews! If you like the Pale Ale, try the IPA. It's slightly more bitter and has a citrusy taste to it. They are also somewhat known for the Apricot Ale. Fruit beers aren't really my thing, but lots of people love it. They've got a nice scottish ale and a pretty good porter too. Actually, if you head down this way, go for the tasting flight. They only charge around $5 to have a 4 oz. sample of everything they've got. There's no better way to determine what you like than tasting them all side-by-side.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
^ That was the direction that I was heading. If passenger rail isn't profitable in Europe, then it probably will never be profitable here. What we're left with is questions like those from the Senate panel who will keep cutting Amtrak's funding until it becomes profitable. It's a downward spiral of logic.
-
Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I realize that the Europeans have more of a critical mass for their rail system, but is their rail profitable? It's sort of apples to oranges because of the way we've decided to build our cities and highways, but I'm still curious.

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
Well...that vacation idea may be on hold for awhile. Seeing as how I'd like to stop off in 3-4 cities, I'd say that chance that Amtrak ruins my vacation is pretty good.
