I don't know about the logic used in this article. A company has to make educated decisions. They look at the cost of a project vs. the benefit that it would bring. Obviously, if the price of oil is low many projects never get off the ground. I don't see a huge conspiracy here, just capitalism at work.
  2. Columbus has older urban housing...it's just called German Village. Hell, the building I live in was built in the 1870's. I simply think that any development that close to the city's core needs to have more than 125 residences per city block. I wonder if that even supports one restaurant.
  3. I'm with you seanguy. This project fits (barely)...it's the new proposed infill on Gay/Long st. by Edwards that falls way short.
  4. Here are some images to put this in perspective...
  5. That's a dangerous attitude. We're talking about residential developments that will be around for generations here. These things don't just go away like surface lots. I can't believe someone would propose three story rowhouses to be placed 1 block from the city's core. Talk about looking rediculous. We can certainly do better from a density perspective, especially this close to offices, retail (city center), and CCAC/Columbus State. I'll be writing an email to the downtown development comittee in opposition, but I'd hope that thier common sense would shoot this down without my help.
  6. Here's the text from the agenda highlights. Congrats! http://council.ci.columbus.oh.us/Asset/iu_files/highlights/highlights20061120.pdf
  7. That's good news! It sounds like the re-vote found the appropriate conclusion. Start small where you'll have the greatest impact, then expand to OSU when it's sucessful.
  8. Anyone attend this meeting???
  9. The leading plan (nothing finalized yet) is for the AD Farrow Harley Davidson dealership to build a massive store, a motorcycle training facility, racetrack and extreme sports complex at the Cooper Stadium site. Or something like that.

As an "outside" observer, I'm not sure I see where you're coming from. Noozer has posted a bunch of news articles on this thread before weighing in with his opinion. Just as he has added his thoughts about the state of our transportation system to this thread, you're entitled to do with other transportation threads here. Sadly, there aren't many rail threads to criticize around here (which speaks volumes towards the state of rail in this country). Also, this is a message board. It's sole purpose is to be a place to share news, thoughts, and opinions. Proceed...
  11. I'm just envious that you guys get to complain about bad decisions on an existing transit system. I'm still complaining about not having a transit system.

I don't really have a political party, but I tend to vote slightly to the right. I'm left-leaning on social issues (gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research, etc...), but right-leaning on the economy issues (in favor of lower taxes, fewer welfare programs, and market based solutions, etc...). Some issues, however, I don't have a party. No politician is in favor of a hike in the gas tax like I am (out of fear), and no parties are especially interested in transportation related issues. The republican party has lost it's identity lately though. They used to be penny pinchers, but now, in an effort to get the Nascar votes, they've spent like mad on "homeland security" and war-related issues. I just hear $400 billion for the Iraq War and think of how much good that money could have done within our borders. Needless to say, I'll be voting a heavily democratic ticket this time around.

    Sounds very...... ......ambitious.
  14. Pretty much...and now we can add a cornerback to the list of "needs". Baxter might be done for good with two blown patellar tendons.
  15. Yeah...I need to get more active with progress pictures around here. I've been meaning to get back out to the Whittier Peninsula to check out the progress there as well. I'll be sure to bring the camera!
  16. I think the crane is big enough. It looks a little smaller in the pics because of the perspective. I work over there and see the progress every day. They've already got another floor poured on top of the one in the progress pics. I think they're running at a pace of around 1 floor per week. Gotta love NRI...when the want to do a project, they really move!
  17. That's probably a better description of what's going on. I just like to play devil's advocate sometimes. ;) COTA is realizing that the market isn't coming to them and keeps sprawling. The natural reaction is to adapt to the market, but I don't see that helping much. It's just such a daunting task to try to serve sprawling suburbs with busses. I can't imagine how they can effectively do it. I'll be reluctantly supporting the issue on Nov. 7th as well, if only to expose more people to mass transit. Maybe if COTA has more visibility in the 'burbs, suburbanites would become more "familiar" with it. Down the road, that might lead to more yes votes for LRT and real regional plans.
  18. Could it be argued that a vote for COTA is also a vote for sprawl? I mean, isn't public transportation one of the draws for locating a company downtown? Ah well.
  19. Barley's in Columbus has a Double Dog Dare IPA (~11% abv). The bitterness keeps it from tasting like someone dumped a shot of vodka in it though. That's the hoppiest beer I know of. My favorites are currently Great Lakes Burning River and Columbus Brewing Company IPA (it's got a little citrus kick). If you like the CBC Pale Ale, give the IPA a shot. I think they just started brewing it within the last year.
  20. For the unannointed...drink with caution. It's a little stronger than your average american light beer. Learn from my mistake. :drunk:
  21. I think it would be interesting to integrate wind turbines into a new building just like they're integrated into the spire. The building could jut out at every floor and leave pockets for turbines in between. In other words...it would be shaped more like a spinal column (vertebrae) than a corkscrew. If only I could make computer renderings...
  22. Looks like another peice of wadded up paper.

I had the same reaction! Maybe Ohio's new nickname could be, "the Saudi Arabia of water". Pretty soon, Southwest Governors will be saying things like, "Our state is addicted to water!".
  24. Maybe you can find one on urbancalifornia.com. traitor. ;)

Perhaps the Columbus chapter could arrange something in conjunction with the CD101 Green Team? http://www.cd101.com/sections/events/greenteam/index.asp Another option might be to work with the Downtown Residents Association. They are in charge of planting Bicentennial Park and may have some ideas for cleanup or maintenance. If any other Columbians are interested in this, speak up! :-D
