  1. I agree completely. Now how the hell do we make that happen?!?!
  2. WOW!!! Maybe the best news of the year for me! I was just going to start a thread about how that salvation army building is so phenomenal and it is being underutilized. I need to go and snap some pics tomorrow. Between the new Kroger, the potential streetcar line, a capped highway split, and now this, my property values are safe and sound!!! Thanks GRANGE!!!!!!

^ As was said earlier...this actually shows peak oil at work. A few years ago, this field wouldn't have been close to being economical to go after. Remember, peak oil doesn't say that the world is running out of oil, only that it is running out of cheap oil. Also, this entire deepwater region may only produce a few hundred thousand barrels per day...and the US uses something like 20 million barrels per day. You have to remember to look at production numbers, because as they say, you can't put reserves in your gas tank.

Walking to work and the grocery store have been the most liberating things I've done since I moving away to college in '98. I'd recommend them to anybody, and I do on a daily basis.
  5. My dad was 2 years old the last time we were in a Championship Game. I'd take a few lost super bowls over 46 years of nothin!
  6. For a quick calculation, multiply the price of ethanol by 1.5. Ethanol gets around 2/3 the mileage of regular unleaded. So...if you find gasoline for $3, E85 would need to be $2 or less to be cost effective for you. That difference is pretty eye opening when you consider that gasoline is taxed, and ethanol is heavily subsidized. I don't have a citation, but I remember reading somewhere that that 14% of US corn grown currently goes towards making ethanol. This displaces 1% of our petroleum consumption. I'll let everyone else decide if ethanol is the answer to our transportation fuel problems.
  7. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. "Light Rail Kills Babies" is some funny stuff!!! If that was going on in Columbus, I'd have to go see the protestors just to laugh at them. People in Columbus always ask me..."why do we need Streetcars when people could just hop on a COTA bus." I never know where to start and this paragraph should help me out immensely!!!
  8. The '95 season was probably a bad indicator. The fans found out that Modell was moving the team. I've got memories of fans ripping out seats from the old stadium after the final game. They were pretty disgusted and many boycotted that season.
  9. Uh...no. In Columbus, you have native Columbusites (who yes, are typically more Bengals fans) and Northeast Ohio transplants (or people with NEO family backgrounds) who are the Browns fans. The media outlets of Columbus are essentially ex-Clevelanders who moved to Columbus via Ohio State only to have Indians/Browns coverage. Thanks God for NBC4 (though the news sucks). I moved to Columbus a few years ago and would've ranked the Columbus fan base like this: 1) Browns, 2) Steelers, and 3) Bengals. Now I would rank it like this: 1) Bengals, 2) Browns, and 3) Steelers (even though there were tons of closet steeler fans to come out last year). Just seeing this demonstrated to me how fairweather the Bengals fanbase in Columbus is (or maybe, just how fairweather Columbus NFL fans are).
  10. No, but for being as damn bad as we were getting 45-50,000 out to a game should count as getting a 100,000 in the stadium! WE SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he was just trying to contrast that with the Browns experience. Cleveland sells out every game no matter if they are good, bad or ugly. And we've been ugly alot lately.
  11. The numbers don't lie. http://www.bizjournals.com/edit_special/43.html#l The Browns fans continue to pack the stadium (99.8% full), while Bengals (89.4%) and Steelers (94.9%) don't show the same level of committment. Just face it...the old stereotype is bieng born out in the numbers. Browns fans are hardcore and Bengals fans are fairweather. Nowhere is it more true than here in the battleground city of C-bus.
  12. ^ I almost made this same post earlier today. The responses actually made me really angry. I feel like moving to another city. I think I need to start looking for a job in Portland. I'm generally an optimist, and I'm very optimistic about the revitalization of our downtown. Responses like these make me realize how firmly rooted the generaly public is in thier entitlement to the suburban sprawl-happy lifestyle. It may take two generations of people in this city to get rid of the closed minded mentality...that's IF we don't alienate the younger generations in the meantime.

That's called the abiotic oil theory and is laughed at by all geologists. The theory states that oil is somehow generated by the earth and bubbles up towards the crust so we can keep harvesting it. I think it dates back to Stalin's days in Russia. It makes sense that some Russians still believe in it too. They damaged thier fields so badly during the Cold War by injecting massive amounts of water to keep the field pressure up. They took some despirate measures (like the US) to keep thier massive machine running. Twenty years later, the water and oil are separating out, and they can go back in and extract some of the oil left in the ground, hence thier belief that the fields "regenerated". It won't last forever though. Oil still remains finite.
  14. Awesome! I love the idea of tying in parking with the funding. It could drive people to park on the outskirts of downtown, pay the $0.25 surcharge, and get a free ride into downtown. It would encourage more use of the system by offering cheap tickets to people who otherwise wouldn't use it.
  15. Other places to check out in GV... Katzinger's or Brown Bag Deli - Both delis are really solid. Katzinger's uses top quality ingredients and thier prices show it. Brown bag has some great sandwiches and is next door to Schiller Park. Banana Bean Cafe - A really small new restaurant from a pupil of Emeril. I think he worked at Emeril's in New Orleans before Katrina. It serves some nice "Floribbean" cuisine. The Banana's Foster French Toast served at sunday brunch is phenomenal! Metroscap - A nice new art shop that opened near Katzinger's. They've got some great black and white shots of Columbus, although they're a bit pricey. http://www.metroscap.com/
  16. I've only been to Juergens once before, but it was pretty good. It's actually a restaurant with a Konditerei attached. The woman who was working the pastry shop when I went (not sure if she was the owner) was very friendly... und auch Deutsche! You probably spoke with Rosemary (the owner). She's almost too nice. I bought a box of treats for a family gathering from there and their credit card machine was broken (I didn't have cash), so she gave it to me on an IOU basis. I went back the next day and paid of course. Try the "bee stings"! Delicious!

^ The city makes great use of the waterfront space during festivals. They set up a stage at the base of the huge steps so everyone can see the bands play. The pathways are lined with vendors too. It looks cool from the air too! :)

And then look right next door at Vet's Memorial to see how not to do it. There are presentations on the website...much better than I could describe it! http://www.columbusairports.com/construction/ layouts... http://www.airportsites.net/CMH%2DEIS/Pages/Proposed_Project.htm

WOW! That's a pretty comprehensive article! On Bloomberg nonetheless.
  21. Thanks for the pics dfly. Yes...that last one is the service building that they don't know what to do with. I suppose it would look better if they punched windows in it like they did with the other building.
  22. My memory might need a little refreshing. Is this the same sized levy that would've built the North Corridor Light Rail?
  23. Personally, I wouldn't complain about the architecture of any new skyscrapers built in C-bus. I'm not a big fan of the glass version of the flatiron, but the corner units with balconies would offer some pretty cool views with all of the glass.

What...like these? http://www.northofbroad.com/ The problem with only paying 160-200k is that land value is higher closer to the city (rather than farmland), so you'll likely be in a less desirable neighborhood. Here's another one, in a more desireable neighborhood. The prices obviously reflect that. http://harrisonpark.com

One could definitely argue that! The problem is, I don't hear any politicians up for election doing so. They just talk about poor Mr. Smith who is trying to provide for his family and can't afford to pay for gas anymore. Then Mr./Mrs. Politician says, "we need to change this!", but doesn't say how. Sorry, but that's not enough to get my vote.
