Gas Prices
This kind of double talk turns me against Sherrod Brown. You can't say that you're environmentally conscious and then turn around and console some poor old lady about her gasoline bill. You can't have it both ways! Cheap gas means environmental damage. It's just that simple. What is he planning on doing to cut that $1,563/year? Give me something concrete! Politicians frustrate the hell out of me.

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
Anyone have any idea when this will be open? I mean, all they have to do is ship in the pre-measured and drilled particle board walls from Sweden and paint them blue and yellow, right?

What got you so damn interested in cities in the first place?
I like living in places with a little character and in close proximity to many amenities, so that got me to buy a place in Downtown Columbus. The thought of purchasing a Dominion Home made me gag a little. I grew up in the 'burbs, but once I moved downtown, I was able to see things from the inside out, and I guess that's what really got the ball rolling. It made me want to figure out what made some cities so great, and others so awful. I read everything I could about transit, new urbanism, European city models, density, walkability, etc... This site has really helped in that regard. Now I'm onto reading as much as I can about the energy industry and how our society can feasibly adapt to the changing scene. I see the two topics as being intertwined due to our land use patterns.

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
^ I read that article yesterday and thought it was rediculous. So the realators are crying because the city won't lease thier small buildings. Then they try to paint a picture of impropriety or a care-free spending attitude by our city leaders. On the honesty meter, real estate agents fall somewhere between lawyers and used car salesmen.

Columbus: General Transit Thread
Forum visitors get history lesson on local streetcars By JENNIFER WRAY Columbus' future could lie in the past. When discussing streetcars in the city, "We're talking about going back to the future," said Jeff Darbee, a historian with Benjamin D. Rickey & Co., at a Columbus Metropolitan Club forum on the topic last Wednesday. Streetcars were present in one form or another in Columbus from the Civil War era through the mid-1950s, Darbee said. "Today they're considered quaint, but they were considered rapid transit at the time," he said. The city was shaped by streetcars, as development sprung up in a cross-shape along High Street and streets running parallel to Broad Street, he said. Clintonville and the Hilltop are two of the neighborhoods that resulted from that development pattern, he said. Only when automotive and bus transportation became available for residents did the "cross" fill in, said Darbee. Full story at http://www.snponline.com/NEWS8-2/8-2_colstreetcars.htm

Yeah, KJP's wager is looking pretty solid. You can also add in the developing tropical wave off the coast of Africa. NHC is expecting this to become Tropical Storm Debby over the next 36 hours.

Greater Columbus COTA News & Discussion
If I hear COTA call it a "Comprehensive Long-Range Transit Plan" one more time, I'm gonna gag. Who are they fooling with that name? It amounts to an improved website and a few more busses on the streets. I love mass transit, so it's gonna really hurt me to vote no on this issue this fall. But I'm trying to focus long term in a post-COTA environment where we might have a real Comprehensive Long-Range Transit Plan for Central Ohio.

Gas Prices
What you just described here is demand desctruction for casual dining establishments via high gasoline costs. People are dining out less so they can still afford to commute and drive the kids all over town, thus, gasoline demand is staying the same (or even rising by about 1% according to the EIA). I'll see if I can dig up a few studies I've read about the breakpoint that was witnessed in the 70's about demand destruction. I believe conventional wisdom says it will happen between $3.50 and $4. Anything short of that, and people will offset cutting back on driving at the expense of other items (casual dining, clothing, gifts, etc...). We're a stubborn culture that believes we are somehow entitled to our easy motoring lifestyle. Obviously, $3/gal isn't enough of a shock for us to cut back on driving.

Other States: Passenger Rail News
$2.3 million sounds like a bargain basement price, considering the cost of building a new line and getting all of the rights-of-way secured.

So did Geiger turn him in to the NCAA? That seems strange that they would set the program back at least 4 years just to get rid of a coach with 2 years left on his contract. Aren't they banned from the big dance this year because of this mess? How do you think that looks to high school recruits.

Grandview Heights: Grandview Yard
Brewmaster replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI think most of the stores have been taken over by Giant Eagle. This site is for the main distribution warehouse. Big Bear going belly-up may have been a blessing in disguise for Grandview.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The rumor is that Gilbert is going to bring in the TV commentator from Detroit because he didn't like that Reghi was honest in his analysis. This guy from Detroit is apparently the uber-homer and never has a critical thing to say about the home team. :x

Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionArticles like this make me realize how important that streetcar line is going to be for development of the downtown housing market. There are enough pockets of nice land around the fringes that are going to offer affordable housing, parking, and close proximity to downtown. Until there is that one amenity that downtown dwellers can claim (i.e. ride the streetcar line to almost anywhere they need to go), then thier market is going to get caught in head-to-head competition with these fringe developments. Don't get me wrong, I love announcements like these. The more living closer to downtown, the better. But if I'm just moving to Columbus, I'd probably lean to the more conservative choice of living on the fringe rather than downtown proper because you still need to drive around quite a bit.

Grandview Heights: Grandview Yard
Brewmaster replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionHow many inner-ring suburbs in the country are blessed with having 60 acres available to convert into a mixed-use development? Grandview has the most potential our of any suburb in Columbus. They've got the right people on board too (NRI)!

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
Oh please. He cheated and he should be fired! In fact, he's not debating over whether or not he should have been fired. This trial only addresses that his contract states that he cannot be fired *without pay* for cheating. The only thing Andy Geiger did wrong is give him that rediculous contract in the first place. I love that he's saying things like, "I'm doing this to clear my name". You didn't clear your name! You still cheated! Now you are just going to get paid for the remainder of that extremely lucrative contract you signed.

Findlay: Random Development and News
If they can't absorb 400 housing units, then they probably shouldn't be spending $58 million on a downtown development that includes a baseball stadium for a non-existant team. They should probably use that money to stimulate growth in the local economy instead. I'm not familiar with the market in Findlay, but I was thinking that for a project of that size, 400 units seems pretty small.

It says something about the desirablility of used Civic's when I bought my '95 Civic four years ago and it only depreciated $250. In the process, I've put about 35k miles on it.

It's not like he's participating in contact drills. He's probably exerting himself the same as he would in rehab, so why not start running some routes to develop that chemistry with Frye?
