Columbus: Local Media News & Discussion
Thanks for the clarification Noozer. That helps quite a bit. It sounds like this may have some effect on the downtown studio. I really hope it comes through though. Columbus is slowly developing an identity, and this would go a long way towards connecting all the suburbanites with downtown.

Columbus: Local Media News & Discussion
What does this mean? I'm a little confused about how the TV broadcasting business works in general. I'm assuming that some "media group" will take over the station and the average Channel 4 watcher won't notice a difference. Is that right? I also wonder what this means for the new downtown studio being built for Channel 4.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Brownfield redevelopment is OFTEN more costly than greenfield. Power plants aren't very valuable to an automaker when there's a whole grid that can be tied into. Old infrastructure is also problematic and can be high maintenance issues (not really Toyota's style). I'm also not sure that Toyota would want ex-Ford employees, they may have poor habits that are not up to to Toyota's high quality control standards.

What Kind of American English Do You Speak?
#105 shows why people from Cincy are so confused about Soda/Pop/Coke. They sit at the nexus of three different dialects. http://cfprod01.imt.uwm.edu/Dept/FLL/linguistics/dialect/staticmaps/q_105.html BTW...it's pop!

ODOT funding available for transportation projects across the state
Sounds like money they could use to cap the 70/71 split instead of fighting it tooth and nail.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
"Rumor has it", that the Cavs will look to Anderson Varajao to make up for Hughes' absence. "Word on the street" is that the Cavs will dedicate thier next win to Hughes and hope he has a swift recovery. "Rumblings from within the orgainization" tell me that the team will look to continue thier winning ways at the Q tonight against Houston. One of the great mysteries in the Cleveland sports world is, "how does Roger Brown still have a job?" What a hack!

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
Down here in Columbus, we can only hope that Casto or someone can put together something this great to take the place of City Center. Stark has some great quotes about new urbanism in that write-up. I really hope that the pendulum has swung. Nice job KJP!

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
More progress on the development of my backyard... The city issued a formal RFP recently: http://www.columbus.gov/Asset/iu_files/Whittier/WhittierRFProposals.pdf I'm encouraged by this statement: I'm pulling for Pizzuti, if only for the fact that he lives right next door in Miranova. I also think that a local guy with experience in Columbus developments is less likely to cut corners to make a quick buck. He seems to be more interested in a legacy and leaving his mark on Columbus.

Mine's Bigger Than Yours... (POST YOUR GAS BILL COST)
3 story loft w/some 25 ft. ceilings and 1450 sq. ft. - Less than $20/month from June-October (hot water heater) $90 for Oct/Nov ?? for Nov/Dec I keep the thermostat at 65° when I'm downstairs, and turn it off at night. It usually drops to 59°, but on the 3rd floor (where I sleep) it probably stays around 70°. All in all, my heat only runs for abour 4 hrs/day.

Columbus hosting the Olympics? Is it possible?
Columbus has Nationwide Arena, St. Joe's Arena, and the Schottenstein Center for mid/large indoor events. It's got Crew Stadium and Ohio Stadium for large outdoor events. It's got Clippers Stadium the baseball stadiums at OSU. They've got plenty of indoor space for smaller events. I see a couple of issues: 1) There is no outdoor track and field facility (the facility at OSU is too small for the Olympics). 2) The airport may not be large enough to handle the huge influx of people in a short time period. And the absolute dealbreaker... ;) 3) We don't have a velodrome! I think the Ohio State Fairgrounds could be completely renovated to become an Olympic facility and make up for some of the shortcomings. The place is run down, huge, in a great central location, and could be used for future state fairs in it's renovated form. It also sits on the first proposed Light Rail corridor from Downtown to Polaris. Another two could be constructed (one across I-70 and the other up I-670 to the airport and Easton). This would provide easy access to a few thousand more hotel rooms, as well as connect almost every venue to downtown and the airport. I say we do it!

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
You're so very brave.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
KJP - I agree completely with the first point, and I'm as excited as you at the thought of this scenario playing out. I just can't see the DaninDC lax security policy working here. I see terrorists targeting a train like this. As much as we all hate it, this is the world we live in. Once they blow up a few of these (and maybe derail one or two of them in the process), there will be metal detectors, baggage screeners, and ID checkpoints at every station. Politicians will see to it, because thier constituents will be afraid to ride on trains anymore. But what do I know? I'm just the typical ignorant american who knows nothing about trains.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Pre-9/11, air travel used to be easy too. You're naive to assume that a centerpiece high-tech train, traveling at 200 mph, carrying hundreds of passengers, would have the same level of security as those old, slow Amtrack trains.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Don't get me wrong, I like to dream about the day we use high speed trains in our daily commute too, but... Aren't we all forgetting about the small practicalities of this type of travel? I think DaninDC was eluding to this, but I'll just spell it out. If this ends up being anything like air travel, it will take you: 5 minutes to park 10 to take the shuttle to the terminal 10 to purchase a ticket 15-60 to get through security 10 to walk to your terminal Right there you're talking about an hour in misc. time. You could be halfway to Pittsburgh in that amount of time. I don't think there's any reason to think that a high speed commuter train wouldn't be subject to the same security that our air travel system currently is. It provides a good target for terrorists...especially a centerpiece like this system would be.

Greater Columbus COTA News & Discussion
I love how they slipped that in to stir up controversy. Someone should tell the Dispatch that $125,000/yr for a CEO is chump change. I'm amazed that he is even putting up with all of these headaches for that.

Moving to Columbus
I agree...Grandview and German Village are the best for nice, affordable neighborhoods close to downtown. As far as downtown apartments go, check out Sixty-Spring (I linked to it in an earlier post). It might be more in-line with what you're looking for. There's also a condo for rent in Connexions that is available through the www.columbuslofts.com link I gave.

Moving to Columbus
You mean it's a little more biased towards Jeffrey Place? :) The guy who runs the website is the lead sales guy for the project, and it's getting to be a little sales-pitchy lately. Still...I appreciate what he's doing with the site. I think it may talk about condos more due to the fact that Sixty Spring and Liberty Place are the only two new apartment complexes in the downtown area.

Moving to Columbus
Like others have said, most of the development projects going on downtown right now are condos. Here are a couple of downtown apartments that I know of... Arena Crossing (there's a wait list and I think they run around $900-1k for a small one bedroom) http://www.arenacrossing.com/ Sixty Spring (decent location in downtown - very industrial feeling - short walk to the arena district - no idea about the pricing) http://www.sixtyspring.com/sixtyspringstreet.asp Brewer's Yard (in the brewery district - 4 minute drive/25 minute walk to arena district - nice pool and workout facility) http://www.brewersyard.com/intro.html Liberty Place Apts. (still under construction in the brewery district - look very nice - might get a move in special to help them fill up the place quickly) no website yet - phone #: 216-221-2626 Here are two websites for independant landlords who rent out condos/houses... http://www.columbuslofts.com/ http://www.metro-rentals.com/ Hope that gets you started
