Why not just sell off all of our highways and allow them to be converted to toll roads? The PUCO could regulate the new owners as they do for other monopolies in the state. If given the choice between a government run system and a regulated monopoly, I'll choose the latter.

Methinks that an announcment about the 70/71 split fix being "deferred indefinitely" might be coming out soon. That's a pretty staggering amount of money.

Idunno, West Virginians are the ones who refer to Myrtle Beach as "the beach". As in, "me and the family are heading to the beach next week." I hope they're not confusing West Virginians w/ Ohioans though. That would be the ultimate slap in the face.
  4. Not to mention that massive gov't subsidies are priced into each gallon of auto moonshine. A change in the political landscape could cause the whole house of cards to fall apart. I suppose an educated consumer could do the same.
  5. The bill as it passed in the Senate looks pretty veto proof. With 6 democrats abstaining from the 70-22 vote (dodd, clinton, obama, biden, harkin (ia), and wyden (or)), they've probably got between 76-78 votes. Time to write your Reps! And send a nastygram to Voinovich while you're at it.
  6. Was I alone in screaming at my TV during the blatant holding penalties on Worthlessburger's TD run and the crucial 3rd and 17? Their right tackle basically tackled Peek from behind.

Can't believe I'm about to type this, but George W. Bush is absolutely 100% correct. Holy crap!

Good news for Brazilians! And 23,000 feet is no joke. That's incredible. I wonder how quickly they'll be able to pull the easy half of that 8 billion barrels out of the formation...on-line in 5-10 years...in production for 20-30 years? They should be able to export that oil for $500/bbl by then.
  9. My prediction: If we force 3 turnovers, we win. Less than that, we lose. I don't think this uber conservative defense is going to work against the Steelers. We can't count on hanging 35 on them. Final Score (if we blitz): Cleveland 17, Pittsburgh 14 Final Score (if we don't): Cleveland 10, Pittsburgh 38

It turns out that the EIA's "This Week in Petroleum" publication tackled this very issue... http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/twip/twiparch/071107/twipprint.html And with the below text, I'm sticking with my slogan for 2007 as "The Year the Canary in the Coal Mine Croaked" They are basically saying that Saudi Arabia is our last hope. If they can't open up the spigots, then the party is over. One of the gloomiest outlooks I've ever read from this always optimistic publication.
  11. Voters layin' the smack down! Nice!

Funny stuff KJP. Thanks! The short answer: We are. Despite our knee jerk reaction to blame others for high oil prices, we actually make a concious decision to buy gasoline and fuel demand. Earth shattering stuff, I know. The system is not really that complex...you drill for oil...people bid on that oil...the oil is delivered...refined...consumed. I also found it funny how he portrayed speculative trading as some incomprehendible, evil black box... Oh my! I'm frightened by such big technical words! :-o Those trading bastards!!!

I haven't read the Nader article, but I've heard this before and it doesn't make sense. What Nader has really said is that oil was previously underpriced, but now speculators in the market are forcing consumers to determine what the true value of oil is to them. Oil is sold on futures contracts right? So if I, Joe Speculator, pay $98 for a barrel of oil for December delivery, I can hang on to that contract and have a barrel of oil in December. I won't do this of course, so I'll sell that contract before it comes due to someone who will actually use it, refine it, process it, make widgets with it, whatever. I'm never going to take delivery for oil, so how am I artificially inflating the price? I'm not affecting supply or demand when the front-month contracts rollover. I'm simply selling it to someone who is willing to pay $98/bbl for it. Even if speculators are shorting the market, or playing games with it, there's only so much oil, and people are still willing to pay $98 for that oil. That's the market price. The only thing the speculators are doing is forcing a bidding war among the users of crude that may not have existed before.
  14. I swear that our strategy has become, "Why should we blitz or put any pressure on the opposing quarterback? We'll just let them score 30 because we can score 35." I also don't know how K2 is going to last a whole season taking a beating like that either. I don't know of a player in the league who plays harder on every snap.
  15. I've found this site to be a great resource to see what's going on in Congress... http://www.opencongress.org/ Here's the direct link to S. 294 (lots of fun stuff to click)... http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-s294/show It passed by a bi-partisan landslide even though Voinovich voted against it. :x
  16. It's always good for business policy to sue customers that don't choose your services. It's what Tony Soprano would do if he couldn't beat the crap out of people.

What do I need to "be cautious" of? I'm not saying that people can't be wrong when they post Flickr image descriptions, but here's the description from the first one entitled "FL9s on the Hudson Line"... The second has the tags "Peekskill" and "Hudson Line" The third is called "Metro North" and has the description, "Hudson Line, en route to Poughkeepsie".

Sure looks nice to me... http://flickr.com/search/?q=hudson%20line&w=all And as far as "irregular operations", if I were that worried about getting stranded, I wouldn't be flying on Skybus, or any airline for that matter. Their on-time reputation has been abysmal this year.

Christ man! I'm on vacation. Just because that 1.5 hour is someone's MetrO North commute doesn't mean it can't be a scenic spring train ride for me!!! That said, I'd expect exactly zero business passengers to go to Stewart.
  20. Brewmaster replied to a post in a topic in Aviation
It's $15 actually, and there's a $1 shuttle that runs from Stewart to the Metra-North train station in Beacon. How do I know all this? I did a little research before jumping on a set of $10 tickets in May. ;)

My thoughts exactly. Just wait until the inevitable Telecommuting Boom of 2013. Should be fun to watch the gas tax go to $1.50/gal to compensate for the shortfall.
  22. I take back what I said about the Lincoln Street Studio concept. It's actually connected pretty well to the rest of the area.
  23. That was my reaction. Between the giant target symbol and the "skypark" it's a wreck. I actually like a lot about Lincoln Street Studio's proposal. If they "ReConnected" it with downtown a little better and added some sort of central feature in the park (fountain/ice rink), I'd really like it.

We might be getting to the time where the market actually works and finds a point where demand destruction starts happening. Exciting stuff! I want to believe that this isn't just speculation, but it's got to be a big part of it. On the other hand, people need oil! They're willing to pay far more than the current market value to get the available supplies. So who knows, maybe this isn't just speculators. I just heard Maria Baritoromo do a guest spot on the Today Show this morning. She said something like, "Traders are worried that the world's supplies are dwindling and won't be able to keep up with demand." That's the first time I've heard an accurate description of the problem. The talking heads typically point to "above ground factors", or "geopolitics" as reasons for increases.
