Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionOne of the best vantage points for skyline shots is North Bank Park. They have metered parking there, but I think it's free after 6. You could also park at Vets or COSI across the river. Some great views from over there. As far as tips...idunno...I just started in with photography as a hobby. I guess one tip might be to have your head on a swivel or else you might miss a cool angle like this... Also, if you don't have a tripod for low light conditions, use parking meters, signs, handrails or lightpoles to brace the camera against.

GOOGLE: All Day, All Night, All Nice
Anybody check out Google Transit yet? http://www.google.com/transit There are only a few cities so far, but it gives you directions on where to walk, what transit route you should take, etc... It's even got departure schedules! Here's an example for Portland... http://www.google.com/transit?ie=UTF8&ll=45.510197,-122.671967&spn=0.383982,0.687538 Great stuff!

Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI agree. It looks great now and will look even better once the city develops the surrounding lots with a little density. There's loads of untapped potential in RiverSouth!

Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionAwesome night for a walk in the city yesterday! I'm still playing around with this new camera, and only brought my cheap-o 50mm prime lens last night...hence the second shot of the Lazarus Bldg. that's framed a little funny. Lazarus reborn Miranova Cap me! Looking West down Liberty St. in the Brewery District. The Worley Bldg is in the foreground with the three new Liberty Place Apt. Bldgs. in the rear. A 5-story condo building has been proposed across the street. No comments on the crookedness of this picture! I blame the parking sign that I braced my camera on.

Columbus: Scioto Mile Riverfront Park News
This could definitely use a little sprucing up. Although I was able to find a few pillars that weren't crumbling into the river...so that's a plus. :-D

Columbus: Scioto Mile Riverfront Park News
Here's a slightly underexposed update pic. The webcam link that AmericaWestCMH posted above probably gives a better feel of what's going on, but I was out for a walk last night with the new camera.

Nice pictures...but I think the phrase "rural West Virginia" belongs in the department of redundancy department. :D

Columbus: Restaurant News & Info
Brewmaster replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment^ I hear you...most of the restaurants in the SN are in no-man's land for me. They're somewhere between casual dining and special occasion places.

Other Countries: Passenger Rail News
The investments elsewhere continue along without us. BTW...I'm really liking the BBC as a hard news source. They provide a great global perspective...much better than anything I've found in this country. France to open fastest rail link http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6450973.stm http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42681000/jpg/_42681359_train_afp203bo.jpg http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42684000/gif/_42684467_france_tgv_east2_map203.gif France is to inaugurate its fastest rail link to date that will see trains travelling at 320km/h (200mph). The LGV-Est line will connect Paris with the eastern city of Strasbourg, cutting travel time from the current four hours to two hours, 20 minutes. Passengers travelling further east to other EU states will also benefit after the launch of the link on 10 June. Thursday's event will be marked with a grand light show staged along the 300km (185-mile) railway line. ......

Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionCan't say enough about the importance of private donors to a city and state's livelihood. The ability to upgrade things that aren't really necessary without having to answer questions about inappropriate use of taxpayer money is pretty important.

Columbus: Random Development and News
Brewmaster replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt's a good problem to have, but if we don't address it correctly, it negates the progress we're making. Mr. Worley - Repeat after me..."Structured parking with street level retail space." This would be a good time to have a coordinated email campaign from UrbanOhioans.

Tiffin / Seneca County: Development and News
Seneca East site work could be finished later this year Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune, 2/28/07 The Seneca East Board of Education approved items for the new campus project Saturday morning, and the construction manager indicated Monday site work may be finished later this year. The board approved a permanent easement with the Ohio Department of Transportation for installation, maintenance and repair of posts for a traffic light at the entrance to the new school off US 224, west of Attica. Also, the board purchased a fraction of an acre for $1 from an adjacent landholder to accomodate ODOT signal requirements and donated a strip of land along the front of the new site to ODOT for lane widening.

What is the future of Urban Ohio?
I like the thought of the UrbanOhio News. I'd be interested in writing a blog to keep folks up to date on active/proposed Columbus downtown development projects. I also LOVE the idea of coordinated email campaigns. I've been sending a few letters lately to city leaders regarding various issues on the urban agenda, but it can get time consuming tracking down email addresses and writing meaningful letters. It would be nice to have electronic petitions or stock emails that could be cut and pasted, which reference UrbanOhio.com and provide some legitimacy to our messages. Anything to streamline the process so more people take action would be phenomenal. One final idea would be to organize events at the statehouse lawn. I'm thinking about grassroots efforts like passing out informational flyers at lunch, but I'm not sure members would have the time.

Peak Oil
^ My real beef is that people like Kunstler throw things around as fact when they don't really know. They're just spectators in the show like you and I. The statement that the kingdom is drilling as fast as it can and still losing ground is baseless. It was a result of Kunstler and others looking at two peices to a complex puzzle (rig count and production) while ignoring the rest. I do know this...the Saudi's have never failed to deliver on one of thier promises. If they say that they're going from 9 Mbpd to 12 Mbpd by 2012, I'm inclined to believe them. If they can't, things could get ugly. We'll have a hard enough time dealing with Cantarell crashing without problems in SA.

Electric Cars
This one is key to many of our energy problems. If we invested all of those misplaced ethanol dollars into energy storage research, it might prove to be a game changer for electric cars, as well as sporadic renewables like wind and solar.

Peak Oil
Peak oilers keep saying this, but ignore the political and technical realities. OPEC announced cuts during the second part of the year and there is evidence that the Saudi's and Kuwaiti's are the only ones complying with them. It's not that the can't produce more, it's that they aren't producing by choice. They also announced two mega fields that will be developed towards the latter half of this decade. That explains the massive increase in rig count. There is also a lag of about 3-5 years between a surge in rigs and a surge in production. Wells aren't drilled in a day. Well...this part is mostly true. :-D

Cincinnati: Kroger
A lot of common sense things that they're doing because they make good business sense rather than save the environment. Not really much to toot thier horn about. Still, I'm glad to see the "corporate greening" trend continue.

Columbus TOD Design Competition
I think everyone eyes that as a central hub when the dream about rail in central ohio. It's got great access to the airport, the convention center, hotels, the arena district, and linked together with a streetcar, you can span north and south through downtown. I'm sure there are difficulties though. The corridor already has freight rail lines, there are some grade changes (nothing really severe) and the convention center is a big roadblock. You'd have to pop up to street level at some point.

Reverse Migration back North
I'm not really buying this as a trend. Old people are always going to flock to warmer areas for retirement. Think about it...year round golf, access to the beach, warm weather is easier on joints, swimming and walking are the two preferred modes of exercise, loads more people their age for activites, etc... I see it as an exception to the rule, rather than "the rule".
