2018 Gubernatorial Election
My eyes roll so hard when progressives say they're voting against Cordray specifically for this reason. I was (still am) a big Bernie Sanders supporter and I will be voting Cordray. He's progressive and he also knows how to get stuff done and relate to the common person (which is unfortunately uncommon). He has the support of Elizabeth Warren and has an excellent record of standing up against corrupt financial institutions. Yes, he's more moderate on guns, but people seem to forget that Bernie was also moderate on guns which is why it's a little strange that the Bernie-supporting wing of. The CFPB chief is not a position that the NRA rates, and if Cordray was to be re-rated again, I guarantee he'd probably get a C at the absolute most. Cordray is still pro gun control - he just doesn't beat that drum as hard as some do. Remember, Ohio is a very moderate state which has only grown more conservative in recent years. Trump won Ohio by 8% (compare that to 9% in TEXAS). We need a candidate who is both highly qualified and also able to appeal to more moderate voters and Cordray is the person who can do that. This absolute gun purity test is a good way to keep holding Democrats back from gaining in Ohio.

2018 Gubernatorial Election
Also, on the Republican side, I wouldn't totally count Mary Taylor out yet. She's clearly trying to appeal to the Trump-wing of the party, and for whatever reason those types of Republican candidates have been under-polled lately. If you look at the Virginia gubernatorial primary last year, and the Illinois gubernatorial primary this year, each of those races had a somewhat similar setup: an establishment Republican (Ed Gillespie in VA and Bruce Rauner in IL) and a Trump-type Republican (Corey Stewart VA and Jeanne Ives IL). In both races, the establishment Republican was comfortably ahead in the polls, but in the end they only narrowly won their primaries. Though she's still far behind, Taylor has been gaining in the polls. Her supporters seem to be more enthusiastic and she's also been getting dark money from god-knows-where.

2018 Gubernatorial Election
As a progressive, I'm supporting Cordray. I like Schiavoni, but I don't think he quite has what it takes for the job. Kucinich is just terrible (and O'Neill is basically a joke barely worth mentioning). Here's a really good old article by Cleveland Scene (from 2007) which does a great job of exposing Kucinich for who he really is: a self-serving noise-maker who isn't really interested in real policy: https://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/the-king-of-spin/Content?oid=1503534 I've been spreading that article around to my progressive friends who have been considering Kucinich, and I think I've changed some minds.

I live very close to this intersection and I am NOT looking forward to seeing that tacky sculpture everyday. I know many talented artists who are struggling to find success, and yet we still have crap like this getting approved.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I think "I Went West" makes solid points about why Cleveland's chances are slim, but I don't think that we have absolutely no chance (and it doesn't hurt to have a positive outlook about this). To me, the obvious choices are cities like Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, and maybe Boston. I'm basing this on the typical metrics that corporations use when choosing a new HQ locations (metro size, growth rates, airports, and of course the existing workforce in the tech sector). However, I think those rules for choosing HQ locations are slowly changing as our world is becoming more interconnected. It is easier to get up and move to other parts of the country than it was in the past. It's also now much easier to recruit talent from other parts of the country. In this regard, there are actually a lot of positives on Cleveland's side. One positive is the low cost of living. For example, I know that Cleveland-based Explorys (now part of IBM Watson Health) uses Cleveland's low cost of living as a recruiting tool around the country. Amazon employees' salaries would go much farther in Cleveland than in a city like Denver. Another positive is the availability of prime real estate in the core of the city. Amazon would pay much less for a new HQ in Cleveland, especially if they partially utilize existing buildings such as May Co or Post Office buildings. I really do think Cleveland has a chance if Amazon is going to consider these aforementioned factors instead of just the typical ones. It's an uphill battle, but it's possible.

In terms of land in or near downtown, I think we have plenty of options for new build. Scranton peninsula immediately comes to mind.

Cleveland: Rocket Arena (Gund Arena)
^ Ahh, okay, I wasn't accounting for the NBA All Star game. So, in theory, it's still entirely possible for a new deal structure to happen in the future (even the near future). It just obviously wouldn't be done in time for the All Star game.

I'm just a little confused here. So, Gilbert said that his reason for pulling out of the deal is because the vote would delay the project too much, which would apparently make construction costs too expensive. Does this mean that there's absolutely no way that another restructured version of the deal is even a possibility? He's making it sound like we were on an incredibly strict timeline in order to make this project ever happen. Or is he just talking out of his ass?

Sooo.... what's gonna happen now? Will the Q just not be renovated any time in the foreseeable future? I think Gilbert should have contributed much more to the deal, but I still think we're going to have to have some kind of deal in the future. As I understand it, the Q is outdated compared to most NBA arenas.

^^ I think if that question was taken into consideration at the beginning of the design phase, they could've found a solution to this. The current proposed layout has the garage fronting Euclid, while the residential portion of the building hides the garage from the E 17th side. They have this totally backwards. Their priority should have been on hiding view of the garage from Euclid, not E. 17th (including access to the garage). All vehicular access to the garage should've been limited to E. 17th and Brownell Ct. in the back. From the perspective of a pedestrian on Euclid, it shouldn't even look like a parking garage is a part of this tower. It's just lazy urban design.

I liked the Noodlecat concept, but it had some issues. The noodles were often so unbearably salty I couldn't eat more than half, even if I was very hungry. The steam bun sandwiches were good, but too expensive for their small size. I think it closed for these reasons more than this being part of a wider trend of restaurants closing downtown. I'm not too worried about this space staying empty for too long.

Eh, I don't really have a problem with the design - and I'm usually pretty critical of bad architecture. The design is kinda basic and doesn't really stand out, but I also don't think every building needs to be something that stands out. I think this building will age much better than some of the other more "unique" new residential structures in this city. It does a good job of fitting in with its surroundings, which, on this street, I think is more important than standing out.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
Recently the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus went around and put up a bunch of Johnson signs. I live on the west side, and I frequently see Johnson signs, but rarely in front of houses.

2018 Gubernatorial Election
The reason Democrats haven't raised much money is because Democratic donors are holding back until some of the big potential candidates make an official announcement. In my opinion these big candidates are Richard Cordray, Michael Coleman, and Bill O'Neill. If any of them enter the race, I would expect Democratic donors to start opening their pockets.

Does anyone know the tenants that will be occupying the building currently being built? I've heard so much about Lucky's but not much about any of the other potential shops.

^ I can't see your photo. Are you talking about the Snavely project? I'm pretty sure it will be getting another story. Currently it's at 4, but the renderings show 5 floors.

I get the feeling that I like Jeff Johnson more than most people on this board, but I too think he's totally wrong on this. The dude's favorite activity is grandstanding, so I'm not surprised about this at all.

Speaking of that McDonald's, I was thinking about how bad that stretch of Detroit is, from the McDonald's to the Family Dollar to the childcare center. So, I got bored and made a thing (mostly just with MS Paint) that would improve the street presence, keep the Family Dollar & McDonald's (including the drive-thru), as well as add more retail (with at least a couple stories of residential on top of course). The addition of traffic lights at W. 73rd would also improve traffic patterns there. According to the County, the total certified values for all of these parcels is $952,500 and they're owned by just two entities (one being McDonald's Corp).

Is there reason to believe that this may start anytime soon? I was assuming it would be awhile before we saw any real movement on this project.

I know it's early, but there have already been some polls and Mandel has been ahead. Hopefully that's just because Brown hasn't really started campaigning yet.

Wait why does everyone think Parkview is going away? Parkview is not located on that block that's being developed.

2018 Gubernatorial Election
Even if Cordray can't be fired easily by Trump, his term as CFPB Director will end in 2018, so it doesn't make a big difference if he steps down to run for governor. I agree that Cordray actually may have a better chance than a lot of people think, as long as his campaign plays their cards right. I predict that there could be a potentially ugly primary on the Republican side, which could leave DeWine a bit weakened heading into the general election (or maybe he won't even get the nomination - who knows).
