  1. The poke craze hits downtown Cleveland at 2nd and High In coastal big cities like New York and Los Angeles, poke places can be found on almost every block, but here in Cleveland, notsomuch. That’s about to change, starting with 2nd and High Poke House + Bar—the new incarnation of downtown's 2nd and High Social House. “We wanted an identifiable food concept to pair along with our cocktails, and poke is trending across the States right now,” says owner Matthew Wyrick. “It’s sexy, it’s trendy, it’s very healthy. You can’t get this anywhere else [in Cleveland].” The change coincides with the bar-slash-restaurant’s one-year anniversary, with a new menu that debuted on February 10. All selections are now dairy- and gluten-free, with special attention to Paleo, vegetarian, and vegan options—a far cry from the bar fare it used to offer (such as wings, fried fish, and burgers). "This is what sets us apart from the Harry Buffalos and other bars in town," says Wyrick. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/street-level/2ndandhigh021418.aspx

  3. PER PoshSteve: Could have sworn we had a Steelyard Commons thread, but couldn't find it when I searched. Site prep work has started on the triangle of land between Keybank and Quigley Rd. No signs as to whats going to be there, but the top layer of soil has been removed and a building site has been staked out, with heavy equipment around.
  4. Sausalito on Ninth to open Feb. 26 in new location Sausalito on Ninth will be opening its doors Monday, Feb. 26, in its new space not far from its longtime home in Erieview at Galleria in downtown Cleveland. The restaurant, an original tenant in the Galleria dating to 1987, has a long list of changes coming up for the short move. Its previous name was Cafe Sausalito. The new focus will be locally sourced food and handcrafted cocktails in its new street-level digs on East Ninth Street in the IMG building. In conjunction, "Penthouse on Ninth" - a new private-dining venue - will open on the 15th floor and seat as many as 100 people with downtown views. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/sausalito_on_ninth_to_open_feb.html
  5. Bookhouse Brewing to add to West 25th Street brewing district If you believe in ghosts, there's probably a good chance sometime this summer that thirsty apparitions will be sauntering through an old building in Ohio City. If they do, they probably will be bellying up to the bar. And they might be surprised at what they sip. Their tastes run to lagers, you see. Vaughn Stewart and Luke Brevoort could not have chosen a more appropriate place for Bookhouse Brewing. The building where their brewery will be located once was Jacob Baehr Brewery, operated by Jacob and Magdalena Baehr. Mennonites, the couple "had a strict moral code - who they would hire and who they would serve," Stewart said. After Jacob died, Magdalena ran the brewery while raising eight kids. She was known as "Cleveland's widowed brewer." The brewery is at 1526 W. 25th Street between Church and Aust avenues. It's about a block from Massimo da Milano, which closed at the end of 2017. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/bookhouse_brewing_to_add_to_we.html
  6. Balani Custom Clothiers expanding made-to-measure menswear in Cleveland Christian Boehm, the Houston-based president of Balani, says Tinter's ability to cultivate relationships with his clients and understand how they like to dress has helped Balani's sales grow 117 percent to more than $7.3 million over the past three years. "We hire people with big personalities, because that really transfers," Boehm said. Stylists like Tinter help clients find the best color, fit and pattern and stay current on clothing trends. Not a small feat when suits start at $899, and jackets at $699. Boehm, a Toledo native who spent nearly two decades in Northeast Ohio, said Balani is so optimistic about Cleveland's appetite for luxury custom menswear that it is opening a spacious by-appointment-only showroom at 600 Superior Ave. in mid-April. From professional athletes and small businessmen, "it's a fantastic market for custom clothing," he said. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/02/balani_custom_clothiers_expand.html

  10. Although Bedrock may be closer to undertaking a project at May Co., Till said his main priority will be to put together a plan for The Avenue shops, the retail portion of Tower City Center. The shops have languished and vacancy has grown at the property since Bedrock bought it in 2016 from Forest City Realty Trust. The multilevel retail center was installed by Forest City in a 1990 remake of the city's former central train station. "Really, Tower City is the hub for everything else we have going on in Cleveland," Till said. "It's vital to us that the heart of the assets we own is reimagined to be all it can be." He said he will scope out community needs for the space, which has remained 100% retail, although that industry has changed dramatically. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20180218/news/152301/former-may-co-building-get-interior-demolition
