  1. While the new building does have a large profile on its east and western sides l think its bulk is nicely broken up with the cutouts, vertical breaks and different peaks on both northern and southern ends. I wanted bulk and height but not something outsize its context and l think that's exactly what we have here. Now if we had gotten the same footprint and height in a plain rectangular box l would agree that would have been a negative but l think P+C gave us a nice combination of size and interesting angles.
  2. Agreed. No frickin stripes!
  3. Best thing to come put of that link is the comment by the millennial spokesman saying that downtown leasing has really picked up. That's the first time l heard that.
  4. Rocket Mortgage? Did l miss that or just forget? What is that development?
  5. After viewing the project in greater detail l must admit l think we dodged a bullet with the tower. Back when we were hearing about a much shorter building most of us were extremely disappointed. But not only are we getting a pretty substantial tower l love all the angles, cutouts and vertical lines not to mention the crown is different from anything else here. And like everyone else l still hate the height of the pavilion but l seem to be in the minority with the shape of it. I prefer the cutout to a box but that is just my subjective view. As for public access to the pavilion l could care less although like everyone else a separate entrance for a public restuarant on the roof would seem to be a smart idea. Any street level retail attached to the garage etc. I think is a lost cause. Of course, like most l would prefer it but l'm afraid SHW wouldn't make it a leasing priority and we would remain with something like the past attempt at retail by the old National City bank along Euclid - leaving papered over windows offering space for lease. I would prefer to be wrong on this but unfortunately l'm probably right. Same with the sky bridges. They are a done deal so l won't waste any time complaining about them. I'm just very pleased with the tower and that will have to be enough for me.
  6. Exactly. Aside from the very interesting look of the tower my biggest takeaway is the second tower. Based on all the discussion and limited news about future expansion l was fully prepared for that expansion to take place far into the future but to see it in these plans, well we may not gave to wait all that long. The other thing is the building on the Jacob's lot look better with the cut-out and rooflines of varying heights rather than a plain two story block.
  7. If they do put in a small hotel l don't see any additional traffic as a problem for the neighborhood. Even with all the development in Battery Park and the Edison everytime l've driven through the area traffic was pretty sparse. The only real problem l see we with development in the near west side is street parking gets a little more difficult. But actual traffic? No, not a problem yet. And after all, our neighborhood development is still small potatoes compared to places like Chicago or Boston etc. As Cleveland's go l'm sure most of us on this forum are outliers in that we like density while the average Clevelander doesn't. As far as l'm concerned density offers way more pluses than minuses so bring it on!
  8. So we're merging a newish and seemingly popular concept (live/work space) with a building that has unusually large foot plates. This works in my fantasy simcity world but will it work in the real world? Stay tuned. That place has always been one of my favorite buildings in town. I love the curving front, the mix of glass and stone, how it appears to be shoehorned into the site just like a real city and of course, the great views of the lake. I sure hope this effort works. If it does it will breath new life into a wonderful building while at the same time adding Cleveland to the names of cities with viable live/work environments. Welcome to the twenty first century baby.
  9. Don't know if Bedrock has the expertise and even the desire to create retail from scratch (doubt it) but if l were them l would start the pitch to Target and go from there. While downtown retail is tough in most cities now l think with 20,000 and counting living in downtown Cleveland a City Target could actually make a go of it. Plus they could act as an anchor store to get others to follow. We all agree Tower City has great retail bones. It just needs something of a sure thing to kickstart the next retail phase and l think a City Target makes the most sense to start with. At this point l think it's more up to Target to pull the trigger but Bedrock needs to pitch them hard. Good luck!
  10. That is NOT funny!
  11. Not sure how accurate the massing for the tower is but if it is close to accurate then my biggest takeaway is just how massive it is. No pun intended. I was expecting a more slender building. That monster will will surely muscle it's way into the skyline even if it's not super tall. Thank you very much SHW, for the tower at least.
  12. What we saw of the Westin proposal might have been nothing more than "pretty pictures" but that is one problem with Cleveland development. Far too many looked much better in the pictures than the ultimate structure that was built. I don't know why that is the case but it happens more often than l like. As far as SHW goes maybe after they introduce pictures to the public and they get some pushback on the Jacob's lot design maybe they will change their mind. That little 2 story CofE sitting in front of a 600 foot tower will look like a speed bump with a walkway. Here's hoping.
  13. As much as l hate the existing parking lot tundra the 3 structures planned will do away with a big chunk of them. And l agree that with the way things go in this town it could very well take years to fill in the rest but who knows, SHW just might kickstart more development sooner. I can see that happening. So my biggest complaint with the project is that joke of a building on the Jacob's lot. Two stories AND a walkway? It's imbacilic. If you are going to move the tower off the square (a questionable choice at best) then the Jacob's lot structure needs to be at least six stories for symmetry. You don't have to be an expert to understand sightlines. That would be a great place to incorporate the hotel on top of their little conference center. I know SHW doesn't listen to the likes of us but if they just LOOK at the plans reported they will see the massive imbalance. It's just awkward as hell. Two stories my ass.
  14. The best thing is SHW stays in town. The next best thing is the welcome addition of a 600 foot tower as seen from any 360 degree distance. That appears to be it though. The size and location of the Public Square building is a massive fail. Same with ground level interaction from what we know. So yes, the pluses definitely outweigh the minuses but oh what could have been. Having said that our concerns are just that. Our concerns. People on this forum have a heightened sense of urban design (what works and what doesn't) but yeah, the general public could care less. And to be fair, we all know SHW is a conservative company so what did we really expect? As the mayor likes to say "It is what it is." Let's just be happy they are staying here and adding a really nice addition to the skyline.
  15. I don't know about everyone else on this forum but l love a glassy build for Cleveland. We have way to much beige and glass really brightens up the skyline (please no stripes). Now if we're talking about a new built Sun Belt city that is nothing but glass then, ok, do something else, mix it up a little. But that's not us. We NEED some modern. Tell me that puffy clouds reflected on the Hilton doesn't brighten your day? We already have plenty of old style buildings and while some are iconic like Terminal Tower, Key, whatever we're calling that gem on Huron now, many are just old. In summary, more glass please.
  16. 600 feet is great but no mention of balconies...sorry guys. The heat's getting to me.
  17. Finally! At long last we finally have plans to address the big blank wall. I didn't see plans for a light show using the church as canvas as part of the solution but l like it. On it's own the church is classic and the existing lighting has been a welcome addition but the image in the article really takes it up to "11" if you get the reference. Old Stone Church certainly wasn't broke, nevertheless a light/music show of that quality can only add to Public Square. My real beef is with the Standard's big blank wall. A well designed mural would mitigate the worst of it l suppose. But my first choice would be to construct a condo building above the church annex. Like originaljbw said, those views would sell themselves.
  18. Not a big expansion but every little bit counts. Thanks for the update.
  19. Looks great. Kinda classy and warm. Now if we could only do something about that godawful blank wall on the Standard building. Yeah, that's never gonna happen. Old Stone Church, 55 Public Square, 75 Public Square and the Standard building. Nice little urban tableau there if only the Standard did its part. That blank wall looming over the square...what was the architect thinking anyway?
  20. I can see this place quickly becoming the go to spot for events. Location, views and amenities. Should be very popular.
  21. Wow! That is outstanding news.

As one who lived in Europe and Israel for two years l heartily agree. By far the biggest difference is they are outside living a collective life while we are inside living in our cocoon of individual freedom. Growing up in the US. except for a few cities that is all we know. It seems so right we can't even imagine another way of life. When l first stepped foot in London l knew l was in another world and l loved it. Like most Americans l had no idea you could live a different way.
  23. Creative approach anyway.
  24. No rush. As long as everything transfers Monday and they break ground Tuesday l'm good. You crazy people need to be more patient like me.
  25. A somewhat cryptic comment Ken. Are you intimating some of the already announced plans for development around SHW may be getting started OR something new?
