Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
Maybe The State Office Tower mentioned here was built, just a little further down Broad St. We know it as The Rhodes Office Tower or perhaps it was the Verne Riffe Center. I am not sure I would want a signature Tower to be built there anyway. It would be too crowded right there I think.

Somebody has been drinking his RedBull. What might you be eluding <spell?> to ColDayMan? Aerial shots of Columbus maybe?

sorry, i lied, I acctually think that the new building that Nationwide wants to build would infact NOT be in the picture.

The building at the bottom left in the shadow is City Hall. I think the new condominium tower that Nationwide wants to build would infact be in view from this perspective.

Bedbugs return to Ohio
I didn't even think bedbugs were real. I just thought it was a saying that my grandmother would say to me before bedtime.

Ameritrust Center, Cleveland
Ahh yes, Rhodes Tower isn't the best, but for some reason, over the past year, I have gained more respect for it as a building. Perhaps it's because it was suppose to be bigger? Maybe because it was acctually suppose to be taller than it is right now? Or maybe because it doesn't have a central core but is acctually served by elevators that are attached at its side? It could also be because it is now more eco freindly? I don't know, I just find it to be more interesting. But I know for sure, if I had to choose the best of the two Rhodes Towers (Cleveland and Columbus) Columbus' would win hands down.

I was just curious to know what Columbus got stuck with John.

Columbus: Downtown: Highpoint / Columbus Commons
How about just completely demolishing it, opening town street back up, expand the ohio theater, and rase <raze?> the parking garage and turn into a park. Okay, maybe keep the parking garage, but definately tear down the mall.

Hollywood name drops Cincinnati
thank you unusualfire, I have yet to see any of season two of Lost :-P I got the first season on DVD this past Christmas and got hooked and I am not going to watch any of season two until it comes out on DVD. Wow! Maggie Grace is from Columbus and she was born the same year as me! That rocks! I wonder if I ever crossed paths with her in my lifetime. That would be even cooler. Oh well. I was reading a mini biography of her and it doesn't say when she moved to LA. Anybody know if she went to High School in Worthington?

Hollywood name drops Cincinnati
Does anyone remember the TV show "Profiler"? One episode took place within the state of Ohio with a sniper shooting at cars on a freeway from a building (this was a few years before this acctually took place) Anyway, I was watching it and was surprised when I saw a helicopter view of downtown Columbus used as a segway into the next part of the story. I was disapointed though because they labled the Columbus Skyline as Dayton, OH. Also, there is a new kids movie out by Disney called "Rebound". I watched it with my little brother. The movie is about a Mount Vernon Middle School basketball team, in it they showed a few shots of the Columbus Skyline. In the West Wing, the actress that play CJ the Press Secratary is acctually a native of Dayton. Third Rock from the Sun took place in a suburb outside of Toledo I believe. Also, one of the characters, (Kate?), in "Lost" is from Shelby County, Ohio.

Nationwide is awesome in doing all this, helping to spur growth in the dowtown area. My only fear is that they will gain too much control and one day go out of bussiness and nolonger be able to maintain things in the area. Not saying that it is likely that they would go out of business but it's always a possibility.

Job growth in the south and why is Ohio far behind?
I think the reason why the Midwest and East was so populous at the begining of the 20th century was because there were many navigable rivers in the area, it's where there was already a lot of settlement in the area from colonization. Also imigration was a major factor in that part of the country at that time. Another factor I think was resources such as coal and natural gas. My question is, do you think it is possible for a resurgence of population? What gets me is that The United States is experience major growth in arid lands, lands that are struggling already to supply water to their populations. When will it stop? I mean, do you think that the pumping of water from Lake Superior to Los Angeles will really happen? I think this might have been touched on a little bit before, but does population growth spur economic/job growth or does economic/job growth spur population growth?

Job growth in the south and why is Ohio far behind?
I've noticed that trend as well, in terms of there being a lot of jobs in the South. I go to school at OU and I know a lot of people that graduated recently just found jobs primaraly in North Carolina. It seems like everyone I know is going there. My two cents about Unions. I was a part of one, I didn't like it because I was only 15 and about a days worth of wages went to paying dues. Also, I felt employees abused the system. Anytime they an employee was unhappy about something as rediculous as not recieving there break on-time, they would threaten to go to the Union. I feel, in that regard, that they help the lazy, sometimes. On the other hand, Unions fight for better wages and benefits, some of these things wouldn't happen without unionization. Now my fathers company does not have a union and they have been trying to keep it that way for years now and they have done a good job so far because they offer decent benefits and genually treat there workers well. They do this not only because they are afraid of unionizing, but do it because it also the right thing to do in general. Unionization, was good in the past, and in some cases is still good today. Unionization should be scaled back a bit but shouldn't be done away with altogether because you wouldn't even have the threat of unionization to motivate a company to do well.

John Glenn Columbus International Airport
I saw those today for the first time! I love the new look of the proposed terminal. I am just kinda bummed that it is going to take so long for it to arrive. But I guess 2018 will be around sooner than i think. I am surprised though that they are going to get rid of the current terminal building, after all the improvements they have made to it I would think they would save it.

Columbus: Downtown: Highpoint / Columbus Commons
I don't think there is a positive future for the mall. I think it will either have to be torn down or made into an open-air market like Easton. I just don't think a mall was really ever meant to be in a downtown area. Although, the only downtown malls I have ever been to have been in Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Columbus. Hmmm, i guess I have been to more downtown malls that I origionally thought. Anyway, I think the mall in Indianapolis is successful because it is connected to multiple hotels and the convention center. The one in Chicago--the one I went to was located on Michigan Ave.--the most popular retail place in the country's third largest city, no? City Center just isn't located in a part of downtown that I think is normally populated by out-of-towners. Maybe if it were located closer to the convention center or the arena district, things would have been better for it. My two cents.

Columbus' East Side in March '06
BTW, Great pictures too, ColDayMan! Is anyone familiar with the documentery film on Columbus' East side called "Flag Wars? It was filmed in that part of town. It is about gentrification in the area and how two different classes or cultures are clashing in the area. I think it is really cool. Here's a link if you have never heard of it http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2003/flagwars/

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
I was going to mention Bowling for Soup and OAR but others beat me to it. I love OAR's song, I just wish it went national. The only thing that made it big by them was "Hey Girl". "Jack and Diane" by Bruce Springstine, I think it is him that sings it. Anyway, it's to my understanding that the song was written about a couple from Ohio. I was listening to the radio a couple of years ago when he was a guest on WNCI's Morning Zoo and someone called in saying that they were the child of the couple he wrote about and he confirmed it. Thought that was cool.

Forumer or Photo Geek... or both?!?
MayDay, was he stalking you? It looks like he was taking a picture of you or you two were taking pictures of each other. I've had it happen to me before. I went out around campus with my roomates camera to take pictures and there was somebody else going around taking pictures as well. It was akward because he was more professional than I was, maybe a photography major judging by his camera, and he started to take pictures of what I was going to take pictures of. It was akward because I didn't want him to think that I was stealing his idea. But then it didn't matter because it ended up my roomates memeory card was full. I'll have to agree with jmecklenborg, it can't all be the beer. I came to school weighing 170 pounds, now I am around 210 and I don't drink. It's got to be the food. Our dining halls are "all you can eat". Besides, gaining weight is normal at our age and I don't really care to diet either.
