Infill in Historic Neighborhoods
I appreciate the sentiment of this post, and I agree that there are myriad practical reasons why we can’t or don’t build buildings today like we did in the early 20th century. But I think your claims about architecture needing to prove that people of this day are also innovative and what not is a bit overblown. Is this not what motivated planners in the era of urban renewal? Sometimes you have to acknowledge that something flat out works, and doesn’t need to be innovated or changed too much. In planning, think of simple organizational principles like the grid. LeCorb and Co tried to innovate away from known models, and while I admire their ideas and creativity, the end product was pretty disastrous. Looking at average buildings in the modern era compared to those of the past, I’m not convinced architecture is really progressing in the ways that cars/planes/computers have. Engineering and architecture innovation hav allowed us to build incredibly tall and beautiful buildings, but on average, it seems newer buildings are not built to last nearly as long, and look significantly worse than buildings of the past.

Yeah, I think OTR is really good on pizza places. I wish a Skyline would have gone into the Lachey's space.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
^Yeah, I've not spent a ton of time in Baltimore, but it definitely feels considerably larger than Cincinnati, I think. It also seems way rougher around the edges and less corporate in the downtown area at least. I know everyone talks about it in connection to DC, but it really feels like a Philly/DC hybrid. Maybe the DC connection was stronger when DC was less polished and gentrified, though. That said, this paragraph could easily be describing Cincinnati:

Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
I would personally LOVE to see SWA do a LAX-CVG route. I read a while back that the LAX flight had the highest percentage of seats filled of all the CVG destinations. Delta either needs to add another daily flight, or Southwest should step in and add the route. I know Frontier and Allegiant fly LAX to CVG, but it's not daily, and those airlines leave much to be desired, imo.

Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
I flew in and out of CVG around the holidays this year, and flying out, there were incredible lines to check bags at the Delta counters. Many people were missing their flights because the lines were so long and moving so slowly. It's great that the airport is busier, but they needed to staff up to accommodate the larger crowds. I'm used to showing up at CVG and being able to walk right up to the counter to check my bag, but I guess those days are over.

Favorite Streets in Ohio
Yes, this area is fantastic. My sister used to live near here when she lived right on the border of Lakewood and Cleveland. I always got a Northside Chicago type of feel from these streets. The good stuff only seemed to last for the first few blocks closest to the lake/parks, but it's a very cool area. Wow, this neighborhood looks very charming. Love the roundabouts and all the trees. I found another awesome street while poking around Google Maps in German Village- Lazelle St. Baltimore or Cbus? https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9501083,-82.9947293,3a,75y,159.77h,77.86t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3WyVxMavTplsL3JIDYjvGw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Cincinnati: Eastern Bypass
Seems like a complete waste of money. It's literally a highway from nowhere to nowhere serving almost no one. If KYDOT has money to burn, how about throwing some at the BSB project.

Favorite Streets in Ohio
I was thinking of several streets around the Coventry and Shaker Square areas, but I don’t remember the exact streets I walked down. That whole area is beautiful though.

Favorite Streets in Ohio
#2 is awesome! It is still detached housing, but the lack of front setback and very minimal side setbacks almost makes the street look like an eclectic stretch of rowhouses in Pittsburgh or something. Very cool, but disappointing to see the nothingness that the street empties out to. I imagine a lot of Cleveland looked like this street at one point. I get the appeal of #1 with the old apartment buildings on one side of the street and the huge parkways and front yards. Would be cooler if the other side of the street was also developed with those multi family buildings. Is #3 a joke? It looks totally abandoned and riddled with trash...

Wow, the entrance to Cedar Point Road is fantastic! Very unique and really beautiful! I'm also a big fan of landscaped parkways, so that Wayne St. example is also very cool. Excited to see what others decide to share!

Favorite Streets in Ohio
I thought it could be a fun idea to post your favorite street segments in Ohio. It can be a portion of a street that you find really beautiful, has a cool collection of businesses, has historical importance, scenic vistas from it- whatever. Please post streetview links! I'll start: 1) Neil Ave, Columbus. Between King and Buttles https://www.google.com/maps/@39.97978,-83.0116372,3a,75y,149.57h,82.21t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sK_JCsk8-S7RjOJe0EbZ56A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 2) Main St., OTR Cincinnati. Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I’d assume this is something the building owner is installing rather than the tenant. Not sure what that portion of the ceiling looked like previously, but it would seem unlikely that a tenant would be able to leave a giant hole in the ceiling if/when they move out of the space.

Cincinnati: Avondale: Development and News
Also some cool old apartment buildings in Avondale will get some love, too. Between this and the big investment from The Community Builders, Avondale has seen a lot of its cool old apartment buildings renovated and retained as affordable housing. Great to hear. I'm also glad the Alms will see some upgrades. It could desperately use them.

Newport, KY: Newport on the Levee: Development and News
Newport on the Levee serves its purpose. The movie theater is nice and large, and there are a few decent places to grab food before or after a movie if you want. Many a Friday night in high school was spent at the Deweys and AMC in Newport. The aquarium is also pretty nice and large, and I think they've even expanded it in recent years. The retail component has been a failure, and yes, most of the restaurants are chains and the bars are not somewhere I'd choose to go, but they serve their purpose. I'm curious to see how the place changes with this sizable investment.

Cincinnati: Clifton: Development and News
That drives me crazy, too. I can never go through a whole loaf of bread before it turns moldy. In general, I would love to see more groceries sold in smaller quantities. As a single person who lives alone, it's very hard to use up all the groceries I get, so I've had to get smart about making things in advance and then freezing them to use later.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
Yeah, there's also a pretty sizable pocket in the northwest Cincy burbs- Springdale, Forest Park, parts of Fairfield, and Hamilton. But you pretty much have to look for Hispanics in Ohio.
-
Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
Yeah, one of my friends from Southern California was recently all throughout Ohio and one of her first remarks about the trip was "I didn't see a single Hispanic person the whole time I was there!" Now that I think about it, that might contribute to higher than normal construction costs...

Cincinnati: Clifton: Development and News
I'm wondering how the owner of a small Indian restaurant has $1.8 million to buy a grocery store. Rather than having one large grocery fill the space, it could be cool if Jagdeeps Indian grocer moved in and took some of the space. That type of arrangement could potentially help with the financials of the store, too, as you'd have a revenue stream separate from just the grocery sales.

NFL: General News & Discussion
The refs were absolutely awful in the last quarter of that game, too. The screwed the Saints on at least 3 big plays in that quarter alone, and because the Saints had used their challenges earlier in the game, they couldn't do anything about them. Felt like I was watching the Bengals/Steelers towards the end with all these mysterious calls and no calls. To be fair, the refs did miss a facemask call against the Saints, but overall, it seemed like the Saints were working against a stacked deck. Of course the NFL would love to see the Cowboys in the playoffs...so it makes sense.
