Cleveland: Downtown: John Hartness Brown Buildings / Euclid Grand
It's amazingly disturbing how long the black panels hung there but within a a couple weeks the character of Euclid/E9 changed dramatically! The same can and hopefully WILL be said when the horrid, condem-that-architect-to-hell panel system comes off the Schoefield Bldg! Now I'm only 1/2 way to being licensed but boy! there were some big egos back in the day! Following in the footsteps of Mies or any of the Modernists is one thing! Thinking some p.o.s. beige panel is a better fit for St. Peter's Basilica is another!

the state of our airlines is beyond pathetic... is there even a word to describe it?

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Is this a flashback to the 2005 Tribe where they ALMOST overtook the whitesux, only to choke right before my eyes, much to the delight of my friends at IIT (other side of the Dan Ryan from US Cellular?). God I hate that team and the southside! only time will tell... :-P

Cleveland: League Park
Don't know if it would have worked but it could have been cool if league park was restored +/- 100% to be the home of CWRU/CSU/current Lake County Captains. Maybe the AAA team could play a 1/2 dozen "home" series a season in Cleveland (15-20 games?). How would MLB feel about a team using a smaller stadium on Mondays and Tuesdays? Indians vs Royals on a Monday night isn't a huge draw these days... This is rather far fetched but just throwing an idea out there...

They're really moving along with Cadillac Ranch! Stud walls up all over the place! The great thing about this project is that it may inspire some people w/ $$$ to invest in the rest of the building--sooner rather than later!

I think people don't know we have a train-period. It has nothing to do with signage b/c they don't even know to look for the train/rapid transit sign when they arrive at CLE.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Look at how the Tribune started the article on a positive note, continued on the positive for paragraphs, then mentioned are 50% +/- population decline just as an aside but counterattacked it with info about empy nesters and YPs returning to the city proper. You don't even care about the "bad" facts--it actually makes you feel prouder-or more excited-to see the growth and change that this city is making! The PD technique is the complete opposite! What a shame we have here in Cleveland... Something so refreshing as this article and it comes from 300+ miles away... http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/green/chi-express-busjul11,0,2044717.story

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Ok, there's some construction going on in the storefronts directly to the west of the cruddy yellow parking garage on Prospect. Are these spaces all part of the 668 project or is this something new? Nonetheless, I hope it's for some sort of retail space!

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
So lately I've been riding the bus to work instead of catching the W25 rapid b/c it's been hot and I don't like sweating during my little walk! Anyways, when did redline trains start having the very antiquated computer generated voice announcing the stops and even bus transfers?! Despite it sounding like something progressive in the mid '90s, it could be quite nice in letting passengers know and even understand the connections at each station. My only concern: Is it really difficult to have the announcements corresond the the correct stop? Letting me know the Ohio City arrival and connections as we pull eastbound into Tower City does not accomplish anything! Also, why does it play multpile announcements at once--staggering 2-3 Ohio City station announcements within 15 seconds of each other--making it impossible to understand. Is our bus automated announcement system pre-recorded w/ an average rest in between each stop? Is this why sometimes I get on the #22 at Lorain/Fulton and it's somewhere in the W.60s still? What system does the CTA in Chicago use? When I was in school, hardly ever were the announcements wrong--even on the busses. Are there sensors at each stop or does the driver/conductor press a button evertime there's a stop/station? I'm not trying to ridicule RTA for streamlining the public transportation experience but really, if it's not going to work properly, what's the use? It looks worse in my opinion. Thanks and hopefully this is new so all of the kinks will be fixed! :-)

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
Well you sort of answered your question--some-not all of these retailers/restaurants are out in the suburbs AND there are a lot more people not only downtown, but in OC/Tremont who'd much rather drive 5 minutes than 30-40 minutes. Oh, and a lot more people who live in the west suburbs who can shave 30 minutes of a trip to the Beachwood area. Now I'm only 24 so I don't really remember the TC/Galleria glory days but these two malls were isolated attractions back in their hayday. By the time Gateway and especially the WHD??? came around to what they are today, weren't these two malls already on the decline? What drew people downtown? The Flats on weekend evenings when the malls were already closed? A crummy isolated lakefront stadium? A brand new theater district?Totally different dynamic downtown and in surrounding neighborhoods these days! Heck, look at the leaps and jumps CSU has made in the past 5 years! We also will see how Starks WHD,Wolstein's FEB, E4, and ECP tie into each other! TC/ Galleria didn't tie into anything worthwhile. We can't look at this project a singular Sephora, Trader Joe's, or CPK! It's what happens when all of these elements work together to create an atmosphere that you can't build out in Strongstucky or wherever! Now MTS and others have also said that internal corporate issues lead to the exit of many retailers--beyond our control. If Toronto has about 1/2 dozen Club Monacos, I'd venture to guess that the entire midwest/Great Lakes of the U.S. can support one in Ohio/Western PA/WV. Really?... That's a Cleveland.com comment! :-(

Rethinking Transport in the USA
too many still see mass transit/rail as a luxury, not a necessity that it truely is, huh?!

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
With the exception of Saturday afternoons, there just isn't enough foot traffic. And 1/2 of the daily foot traffic that exists will not go into most of the establishments to eat. We talk about critical mass regarding population for downtown to attract retailers, etc...Aren't we a dozen or so more storefronts away from making W.25/Lorain/Bridge a destination aside from few days the WSM is open? A few more evening options and a few more daytime options--both food, retail, and entertainment. I'm not knocking W.25th , just pointing out that it has yet to reach its full potential--and THAT'S exciting! Sorry for going off on a tangent! It's just that eating on Dish's patio on a Sunday morning and it being the only active storefront on the street is rather disheartening.
-
Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I too have eaten at Dish a few times (Sundays only)...but that's it. As with many other businesses in the neighborhood, it's nearly impossible to patronize them unless it's the weekend since they close around 6-7. Great sandwiches, brunch, and owners nonetheless! Good luck!

Cleveland: Public Square Night Shots - July 2, 2008
The TT should having the dancing/blinking tower every hour on the hour like the Eiffel Tower. It would definetly put a smile on everyone's face! Did I hear, or see, it here but doesn't Atlanta go by the saying, "Everyday is opening day" ??? I hope once the tower renovation is complete, we won't have to wait 364 days to see this again! I think something as simple as a dancing TT would be a huge step in the right direction of a new Cleveland.

Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have....
Any mark-up at a downtown Omax/Staples location would be offset by the time and gas savings from driving to SYC or any shopping center for that matter. I'm referring to an enormous mark-up at Kinko's or a limited selection at CVS. If we won't settle for the internet or driving to SYC as the source of our other purchases, why is this one ok? Sure OfficeMax isn't as glamorous as Barney's, nor will it draw customers into the city on weekends but it is another piece to the puzzle in making downtown a self sustaining place.

Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have....
Drive to SYC in an emergency? Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up something that isn't marked up 500%? Is this the same UO I've come to love over the past few years??? Ok this isn't the Loop but I would like to think we could support one Officemax Express if we think we can support all of the other retail we want or think is coming to WHD, TC, etc. Whatever, I'm done with this thread.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
And let's not forget that all of the great streets of the world have their fair share of chain, corny, main-stream American establishments. Do we know how lucky we are that E4 and WHD has maybe +/- 1/2 dozen chains (not counting fastfood/coffee)?! Hard Rock, Houlihan's, Morton's, Hyde Park, Blackfinn, Cadillac, Chophouse???, Bice???, Vivo???...We could have it a lot worse, I mean generic (see Indy). Now if this was Red Lobster or Olive Garden, then I'd b*tch! Sure I'd love to see something more original/upscale with a huge European style patio with small, 2-person tables 12 rows deep since that part of the sidewalk is huge, but with an additional 50,000 SF of retail and the residential/hotel component above, I'm really excited to see some energy around Public Square after 6pm on a regular basis for the first time in my life!

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Why can't the NIMBY communities (ie Bay Village-the Monaco of the North Coast...) just not have a station. If it's such a big deal to have commuter rail run through their city (because no other city world has commuter rail running from wealthy suburban communities to an urban center), skip them but don't let the rest of the region suffer from their arrogance/ignorance. They're so well off anyways that $5/gallon gas shouldn't deter them from driving to work or even to Lakewood to ride the train. Of course this isn't solely a NEO state of mind but I would like to think we're more progressive and practical than this...

How long have we known this?! Infrastructure and mobility w/in the USA is no different than designing the Chicago Spire with one elevator and stairwell. A couple setbacks and everyone is screwed.
