  1. Is something going into the old Monastery space on W.25th? There looks like there is something happening.
  2. Regarding KSU's move...I think it'd be a great addition if Utrecht, Dick Blick, Pearl, or non-Cracker Barrel Pat Catan's prototype store opened a ground floor store for all of the area students and design firms...God if I added all of the money I spent on models and other projects in 5 years of architecture school...
  3. I'm sorry but continuing to justify ourselves with respect to Columbus or any other average American city is part of the reason things aren't changing as quickly or drastically as we'd like. Patting ourselves on our backs and claiming every superlative between NYC and Chicago will only get us so far.
  4. the tower city silhouette is awesome!
  5. "Welcome aboard the RTA Redline EASTBOUND, destination Stokes/Windermere Rapid Station, next stop W25th/Ohio City", as we pull out of Tower City headed westbound! I know we've brought this issue to everyone's attention but it's been a year already...I heard that announcement on the train yesterday! :wtf:
  6. A few weeks ago I was leaving work around 7pm and noticed an architectural tour of downtown taking place at Euclid/E9th. Are these a regularly scheduled occurence or was this a unique tour. Does anyone have information on this? Thanks!
  7. The West Side Market was featured on Today today! Al Roker is in CLE for his neice's hs graduation from Shaker so they did the weather segment from the WSM! I wish I was able to see the tour but I had to leave for work. Nice CLE shoutout! :-)
  8. I think we're putting too much pressure on E. 4th. I don't think any of us on UO, in our wildest dreams, would have expected the type/pace of development on this street 3-4 years ago. With the exception of a few spaces, the entire street is built out--from sub-grade parking to 5th floor condos/apts. We say that E. 4th needs a bookstore, shoe store, gallery, blah blah blah, etc. OR that it even needs to create nooks...E.4th is a nook itself! It's time for the adjacent properties and other "districts" of downtown to step up and supplement the great assets we already have. Don't get me wrong, I know there is other activity going on downtown and that E. 4th's development is an onging 1-2 decade process. What scares me is an "E.4th or bust" mentality where streets like Euclid get the leftovers.

Really! The last 5 minutes of the game there were 20,566 watching LBJ carry the entire Cavalier offense. A win is a win... :|

:-o:cry:  I didn't realize they had a timeout with 1.0 seconds to go so I walked away from the tv to cry in a corner...I then heard the most surreal roar at biermarkt/bar cento, turned around to see the mayhem... where will amazing happen this year?... Yes, it's already the new commercial.

Denver vs. Orland final and you'll have not only a suicide watch on the commissioner, but about 3 million NEOians!
  12. I'd also like to offer a suggestion: Perhaps RTA can work something out with Continental to mention RTA Rapid service between CLE and downtown--both on continental.com and Continental Magazine. Continental obviously needs to mention transportation between Manhattan and EWR but they also mention bus service between downtown Houston and IAH that costs more than a cab in Cleveland! If some p.o.s. bus service in Texas warrants attention, I don't see why $2 rapid transit from one of its hubs doesn't. :-)
  13. Sometimes I don't know if I'm in Cleveland, TN or Cleveland, OH! I'm sorry but are we going to object the whole MM/CC project too b/c it might generate traffic and impede on our congestion free city?! :? We know most of our "leaders" lack vision, but UO users?
  14. Does anyone have any idea when the ice cubes will go away? This is as bad as still having Xmas lights on your house! :x
  15. Next door is a new Johnston + Murphy and a new Hudson News around the area where the old R+R store was located. My dream job as an architect would be taking the world's largest scalpel to Hopkins!...
  16. Time is money, yes. So if you're a business person travelling to Columbus, you could work for 2.5 hours on the train from Cleveland instead of not doing anything for 2 hours driving yourself down or wasting 3 hours out of your day to fly the 20 min. flight.
  17. OK, it's Cinco de Mayo and there are still ice cubes on E. 4th!!! Come on now! Especially with national/international exposure w/ the NBA playoffs, you'd think they'd be in a rush to replace the winter themed planters with the lush green rainforest we had last year! What's the timeline for this?
  18. Happy Dog on Detroit in the West 50s is a pretty amazing, CHEAP, Muni Stadium era Cleveland bar! They have Unibroue beers for $4 and their menu is awesome (as far as bar food is concerned). I've been in Cleveland for two years and just recently made it to that bar and look forward to watching some of the playoffs there!
  19. Is the food/retail expansion/renovation going to include a duty-free shop? Granted right now we only need a kiosk but if we have little shop, perhaps it would help in solidifying a year-round transatlantic 757 route? I'm sure more is taken into consideration that whether or not airports have duty-free when assigning routes, but as a hub, maybe we'll be taken more seriously with better amenities to serve as a legit alternative to EWR and IAH.

You say tomato, I say tomato. Is glass and chrome bling bling??? Or is a brick veneer, Las Vegas Venetian-looking station gaudy? By NO means is Cleveland ahead of the curve regarding architecture and technology but that's for another time and place.

What are we trying to maintain? The density-both people and buildings-and topography of the Little Italy neighborhood is what makes it an exciting place. Most of the buildings rather generic-well kept but generic. Thanks to the many medical, cultural, and educational institutions, University Circle and its environs are the most exciting, progressive, transient, etc. neighborhoods in the city. Allowing for an envelope-pushing (for Cleveland anyway) design approach to an RTA station goes way beyond the cosmetic "bling-bling" you seem to oppose. For the first time, especially on the east-side, a redline station becomes an integral part of the neighborhood. It not only provides access to/from the area via the train but connects two neighborhoods on many levels. The adjacent areas are filled with activity--we no longer shun some dirty, dangerous train. Instead of transportation architecture serving solely a utilitarian purpose as it seems mandated in Cleveland (see our airport...), this station redefines the boundaries in which it can function as art, green space, retail, etc. I understand that two new fancy stations can only accomplish so much. I'd much rather triple our rail coverage with very generic stations like Chicago but that isn't happening any time soon... In the mean time, we need to make what we already have work! We need to connect our good neighborhoods as to not allow the negative/void spaces in between to prevail. Why do we think some tiny 1/2 mile strip in Cleveland, OH should remain trapped in some time capsule when millenia old cities all over the world embrace technology, allowing it to respond to their current needs. Cleveland is a place of transition/contrast. This is what makes us unique! They way in which we respond to what has happened the past 50 years in this city and how we move forward with new technologies will define us forever (because quite frankly, does anyone think we'll be around for 1000 more years). If I want to hear Italian and eat good gelato I'll go to Rome. If I want to be trapped in a brick and limestone maze, I'll head to Boston. If I want to truly unique urban experience, I'll go to Cleveland where it should/could be an evolving/living museum of the industrialized world.

I ran the 10 miler and I thought my legs were going to fall off around mile 8-9! It was a gorgeous day but our bodies weren't used to that heat! Not to mention the trees w/ few leaves to block the sun! Good time overall though!
  23. Ok so EVERY major metro area in the country is listed on one of the lists...What's the point of this?!
  24. does anyone else think it's weird seeing 2010?!?!?!

We need to fly our flag everywhere! 98% in this city don't even know we have a flag! Chicago flies their flag as much as the American flag...Have some pride people!
