Yay Key Tower  This week is really busy at work so I don't have time to play with my 2 designs but maybe this weekend I'll be able to fix some things and get an illustrator file so anyone can play with it too.
  2. :-D I'm just happy
  3. 1. Hollywood of the Midwest should not go the current convention center. The Malls would remain quiet-even quieter perhaps and development around that area would not follow a few camera men. 2. Downtown Cleveland is not that big so there's no reason Tower City wouldn't thrive as a mall with the convention center expanded in its current location. It's not that much farther to St. Clair/W.9th from the Malls than TC to the WHD. Plus, everyone and their mother knows Cleveland for the North Coast and the current site is as close as you can get to our main tourist attraction. Now I know some people would say that downtown isn't that big so moving the current site to TC wouldn't hurt anything...WRONG. If the mall is quiet nowadays even with the petite convention center, removing a 'constant' source of energy in the area would really put a damper on the area. At least TC could and should market itself as Ohio's premier mall even without the convention center. There are enough people in NEO and enough stores not in NEO to make TC a destination. It seems like every decade there's the new fad in Cleveland and every development project has to revolve around that concentrated area. There's no vision--no masterplan. Why not build on what we already have instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every 10 years? First it was the Group Plan way back when, followed by Erieview, Flats, Gateway, WHD, and now E.4th, TC, and hopefully Euclid. Gee, maybe if we didn't ignore what's going on 2 blocks away, the entire CBD would transform into a 24/7 neighborhood instead of an in-cohesive jumble--incohesive, not diverse. 3. Now even if the convention center moves to TC, the Malls would make quite a nice backyard for condo towers and hotels. Since downtown isn't that big, there's no reason people couldn't walk to/from the Malls to TC but who am I kidding... I have a feeling the current site will be ignored--much to the unfortunate demise of what was once considered one of the country's most significant civic spaces back in the early 1900s... :| On a smaller scale, we're NYC meets Chicago meets DC. I hope we don't lose the unique spaces and places that make Cleveland CLEVELAND!!!
  4. Jamiec, While I too laugh at the 'traffic' in the WHD on weekends-I remember the first time I saw it I was like, "wow, it's kinda busy!", We can talk about too much traffic down there when it starts backing up over the Detroit/Superior Bridge! In all of my years, I've never seen congestion on that bridge! Ok well after the Cavs beat the Pistons in game 6 but that's it!
  5. MUSKY YOU TEASE! Am I blind or is the Titanic Bldg. gone?
  6. PUBLIC SQUARE?! :-o HOLY SH*T! :-o

speaking of threads for UOers to submit designs... A while back someone told us about the redesign cleveland charette website. It's still up and running although I always forget about it.
  8. I really thought we'd see Whole Foods and/or Trader Joe's in one of these projects. Hopefully we do!
  9. Is this Cleveland or Dubai?! Between the Ave. Dist, Stark's WHD, and Wolstein's FEB, we're building "cities" from scratch all over downtown! It's kind of cool but kind of scary too...Hopefully it's not a Crocker meets Legacy meets Eton (in terms of design).
  10. I saw the thread earlier today too but again, every month there's a thread on that website regarding CLE expansion and we keep waiting... IF there's a new concourse announcement tomorrow, PARTY AT MY PLACE!!!

Nice pics! Pitt is gorgeous and Nashville looks like Akron on steroids. God bless the NORTH!
  13. it's so beautiful... God help all of us if 515 or something of that 'height' has the go ahead
  14. The only thing going on on Michigan Ave. is shopping and people getting starbucks... Considering what this was 3-4 years ago, I'd say it's a nice START. E 4th is far from being completed.

I did the drawing in cad and photoshoped it--is that allowed for the contest??? Anyways, if you want the cad file, that's fine--otherwise I can make it in illustrator for you later today?

    drinking buzz?
  17. Double-skin facade!!! Is this the first one in Cleveland? Granted it's not a huge installation but it will be interesting to see how it fares in our dramatic climate. I'd like to see more people experiment with those over here.
  18. Whoops, sorry to reiterate 3231... I agree that east of downtown has the feel what is now the south loop in Chitown.
  19. Unless some heavy demolition takes place on Superior, it will never be Michigan Ave. Between the Courthouse, libraries, Fed. Res., 5/3, Key(brick one), 200 PS, and the Mall, the buildings are fortress like and very retail space exists except for a couple of storefronts in the Arcade and the building with Dominos. I'm not ripping on Superior but Euclid, Prospect, Huron, and WHD streets are more condusive to flourishing retail. It's the civic/institutional grandeur of Superior that makes it beautiful.
  20. WOW, how inspiring... and Cleveland architects are p*ssed that MOCA and CIA went overseas for their architects...
  21. People, give me Paris/(minus La Defense)/Amsterdam over Houston/Atlanta ANY day! Height is nice but wouldn't you rather have every empty lot in the CBD occupied with a 100-200 ft building rather that adding Ameritrust and Progressive? Downtown Cleveland has magnificent civic spaces. It's one of the most civic-oriented cities I've seen in this country. We'd gain a true understanding and deep respect for Public Sq, Group Plan, Gateway, Riverfront, and the Lakefront if we had the density to back it up. We need contrast between the open spaces and "dense" core. Central Park wouldn't be "Central Park" if it wasn't for the extreme density around it. That's what the original intent was and luckily people bought into that idea so that nearly 1 1/2 century later, it's one of the world's most famous parks. As we always say here, just wait 5 years!!! FOR REAL! :-)

I don't mean to be disrespectful of any who has submitted a 'design' for the new logo but can we please take a step back, refresh ourselves with the criteria, and stop with the arbitrariness? I personally think that the current logo works quite well but it appears that some feel it has run its course and it's time for a new UO logo. That's fine. Perhaps we're looking for something that says "Urban Ohio" without literally saying it. That appears to be the idea behind some of the most recognized logos in the world today. With or without the name, the logo is identified. (Target, United, Lufthansa, Nike, Adidas, Mercedes, Mac, etc.) Now I don't expect UO to enter the realm of the aforementioned corporations; however, if we're going to create a fresh new look for UO, it should be worth our while. How can Ohio-in all of its urban glory-be represented? That's the challenge here. Expirementing with Arial text sizes 10-24 and choosing randoms colors that don't represent a specific political party are not design exercises in any stretch of the imagination. They are arbitrary moves which do not lead to a strong, effective logo. As critical as we are of urban planning decisions and architectural designs in our respective cities, so should we be of something that represents the advocates for a stronger, truly urban Ohio. Not to knock everyone, there have been some submissions that appear to be going in the right direction--not all but some. Now I realize that I may scrutinized for these remarks and my 2 designs may be torn apart just to "prove me wrong" but I'm OK with that as long as the next two weeks are used by many forumers to submit some effective and attractive logos. Good luck and please don't hate me
  23. Oh, and about the DCA, one morning in July, a yellow shirted man was picking up a box on Prospect and jumped a bit--as I walked right by him, he showed me a dead, bloody pigeon! :-o Needless to say I was a bit freaked and ran away!
  24. She's grown weary?! SHE'S GROWN WEARY?! That commute in horrendous rush hour must be taking its toll on her! Let's use the sales tax money for a 16 lane I-90--just like the Dan Ryan!!! :|
  25. waiting for this is worse than chinese water torture but it looks yummy!
