  1. http://www.rockthelake.com/buzz/2018/01/pedestrian-bridge-north-coast-harbor-works/ Pedestrian bridge over North Coast Harbor in the works By Laura Johnston | January 16, 2018 Remember the plans for the North Coast Harbor pedestrian drawbridge connecting Voinovich Park to the plaza near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? After nine years, $6 million project could be on its way to fruition. The city of Cleveland is working with the Ohio Department of Transportation on the project, and bids for the work are due Feb. 15, said city spokesman Dan Williams. Unfortunately this is for the hideous CDM Smith drawbridge design and not the refined Rosales version. At this point the project should just be scrapped.
  2. If only we could turn back time . What if this was never built at this location?
  3. I just noticed that the renderings submitted to The City Planning Commission back in December had Gensler Rossetti as the architects. What happened to SHoP Architects? They were the ones originally attached as the architectural team with Rossetti.

Video of Euclid Square Mall's destruction
  5. I forgot it was announced May of 2017 that an additional $74.2 million is to be spent on top of the $120 million spent on the "green"facade. None of those figures included repairing the faulty concrete plaza walls nor the WRL prior renovations. http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2017/05/ohio_federal_buildings_to_get.html
  6. You are correct it is a moral statement but it is also using Benjamin Franklin, whom was a political figure in American history.
  7. Newest public art in Public Square. I am all for public art but I don't see the merit for this. IMO it feels more about a billboard with a political statement. Also I am intrigued by the photo that shows a vehicle in the pedestrian promenade path . I thought all the jersey barriers and circular planters were to stop any vehicles from its ability to injure pedestrians. lol Public Square needs to be a calming escape but the Square is now overloaded with art chosen by LAND Studio. Two of these installations have political overtones. breanne_Super thrilled to have worked with @landstudio and @egweeds on this commission for the Public Square billboard project in Cleveland. Last spring I silkcreened a small run of protest posters featuring "SILENCE DO-NO-GOOD" as a way to update one of Benjamin Franklin’s pen names, Silence Dogood. Benjamin Franklin is a celebrated figure in the print world, but as a human/artist/teacher and intermittent publisher myself, it was frustrating (and not at all surprising) to learn that he was a cautious abolitionist. He owned slaves and then released them but never truly publicly opposed or denounced slavery. For those who will see it, I hope the text will serve as a reminder or WAKE UP to speak out against white supremacy, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, hatred, and racism. ❤️?????????????
  8. I am certain this will be used as an example of the least successful economic way to convert a building to green efficiency.
  9. Wouldn't it be better to hold this design competition after the building it will connect to is fleshed out?
  10. All the talk of closing Burke for development should first see how hard it is to even get development done around The North Coast Harbor. Efforts should be focused on making sure Cumberland carries through with their plans. I am amazed how long or if The North Coast Harbor connecter bridge that has been planned and designed for more than 10 years still hasn't happened.
  11. https://clevelandhistorical.org/items/show/241 The Cleveland Historical website has a great history of the building. It always fascinates me that the building was originally only 4 stories tall and then had 2 floors added seamlessly. I don't think the interior spaces have any historic remnants.
  12. There are renderings on the City Planning Commission website: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2017/12152017/index.php Thanks. I am underwhelmed by the south facade transformation. Also the entrance locations on the north facade do not match up to any street crosswalks.
  13. On The Q Transformation site it states work is being done to the south side facing Progressive Field. Has anyone seen a rendering of that is planned? http://www.theqtransformation.com Initial Phase of Construction on Quicken Loans Arena to Focus on Exterior of the Arena CLEVELAND, OH - Construction on The Q Transformation, the renovation project to update and modernize the 23-year-old Quicken Loans Arena, will occur in mid-February with barriers to define the construction zones going up on February 5th. The initial phase of construction will focus on the exterior of the building and will impact the way fans enter and exit The Q for events, as well as vehicles traveling on Huron Rd. in the Gateway District. Work will start on the north side of the arena along Huron Rd, and the south side of the arena facing Progressive Field. The north expansion will span from the corner of Ontario St. and Huron Rd. to the corner of Huron Rd. and E. 6th St. The expansion of the north side of the arena will add a 42,530-square foot atrium space along Huron Rd. that will be enclosed by a glass facade. The south expansion will add 6,350-square feet to the arena’s main concourse.
  14. As for why the RRHF never was built at the Tower City location was allegedly due to the record store that was added into The Avenue shopping. Not sure how true that ever was. I am surprised the mall hasn't been turned into a similar concept as Caesar's Forum Shoppes. If Gilbert added a performance showroom and an added casino area connecting the facility couldn't the jack casino remain in The Higbee Building and as well on Huron.
  15. Has anyone heard anything to remedy the "temporary" solutions for homeland security safety after reopening Superior Ave? The Plain Dealer reported back in August that the Group Plan Commission and LAND Studio were going to have plans to present the public by the need of 2017. I haven't seen anything presented. Field Operations was supposedly hired to do this. I wish the focus was placed on remedying this before any more public art is scattered throughout the park. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2017/08/james_corner_field_operations.html CLEVELAND, Ohio - James Corner Field Operations, the leading landscape architecture firm that designed the renovation of Public Square, is working on what it hopes will be a high-quality solution to address homeland security concerns about terrorists using vehicles to plow into the space. Also I read in the Plain Dealer. http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2018/01/cle_chatter_metroparks_to_sett.html Speaking of the Metroparks: Don't expect to find Chief Marketing Officer Sanaa Julien back in the park system. You may recall that the Group Plan Commission, which manages Cleveland's Public Square and other spaces, appointed Julien in 2016 as a loaned executive from the Metroparks to guide branding and event planning for the newly renovated square. The agreement between Metroparks and GPC expires Feb. 28, 2018. The Metroparks said Julien is not coming back and her position has long been filled. Under the loaned-executive agreement, the GPC pays her salary and the Metroparks provides health benefits and pays contributions toward her retirement. Tony Coyne, chairman of the GPC, said Julien has been a godsend and the commission is working out details to keep her as its own. Lastly it is interesting to revisit the planning back in 2014 where the budget was stated to be $30 million dollars and that Superior to remain open was always the design plan. How all the safety issues fell through the cracks I would love to know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8z8DEVcPo0.
  16. I was playing around with a concept I had in mind for connecting The Burnham Malls with North Coast Harbor. First plan is to extend the Huntington Parking Structure and Willard park's structure . Huntington would extend all the way to the Shoreway Bridge. This would alleviate the need for more Convention Center parking ,courthouses, and for events at First Energy Stadium. Willard Park's structure should be filled in all the way o East 9th St. Both rooftops of these structures should be turned into green spaces and the east west promenade restored from West 3rd to East 9th. The most dramatic change would be to extend the existing promenades as land bridges crossing the railroad tracks and shore way. Instead of sloping down, these should remain level with Mall C. The west promenade would land at the second level of The First Energy Stadium . This would provide a better flow iand connection to activate the Malls during sporting events, i.e. tailgate parties. The two promenades would end at a new overlook that would have escalators and elevators to the redesigned plazas below. I would eliminate the drop off area to the front of The GLSC and hardscape the area between GLSC and RRHF . This still provides an added area for a connector building between the 2 museums. The promenade extension building below could also act as a restaurant /retail space. This plan also leaves the area east of the extended area for the eventual multimodal transportation center. This could easily connect to the raised land bridge promenades. Thoughts
  17. While I commend the concept of the land bridge , I find the plan confusing. I don't see any of this happening. How many years has it been in development for the iNorth Coast Harbor Bridge that has been proposed and changed since 2008!. I also do not understand where the Mall needs to connect directly The GLSC and RRHF. No panning was ever considered to add parking to renovated Convention Center/Burnham Mall areas. The Waterfront Line should have been better designed to have carried passengers directly from Tower City to the museums front steps. Any plans that were to activate the Malls for better use was sidestepped and all ideas were transferred to Public Square.

I wish the ice rink rental shipping containers were not an afterthought when the renovation of Public Square happened. I would have loved to have seen the cafe design to have had a multi-purpose element for skate rentals in the winter and towels for when the fountain is in use.
  19. https://www.clevelandpublicsquare.com/stories/november-2017/corner-light-a-collaborative-story-about-clevelan Corner Light in Public Square Neighborhoods define the character of a city. The triumph and tragedy experienced by its residents give meaning to the nondescript buildings that populate the skyline. Day in day out, neighborhood life generates stories, many of which are forgotten, others living on to form a narrative unique only to us. Whether a story emanates from a living room, corner store, playground, or intersection there is always a visual language that holds it together. The collection of symbols and signs before you uses a vocabulary best understood by those who have contributed to the story of Cleveland. Corner Light is a monument to what gives us character, the neighborhoods that emanate from our city’s center. Corner Light was created by Cleveland SGS, a collaborative of artists based in Cleveland, Ohio. For over a decade Cleveland SGS has investigated the hidden meaning behind the commercial narrative of their hometown. From pawnshops to carryout, hair care to daycare, back alleys to bar stools, SGS chronicles their discoveries in paint, pixels, motion, and sound. Not a big fan of the amount of different public art that is being created and displayed in Public Square. Place some of these art installations along the Mall B and C promenades.
  20. I wish the jersey barrier replacement was higher priority than more public art in Public Square. LAND Studio is behind both projects. There seems to be an abundance of art already in place. I am interested to see where this video kiosk is planned. I would prefer if the televisions in Rebol incorporated the live video feeds.
  21. In keeping with the theme of the chandelier representing the area why not name the tower The Prism.

It is sad to hear that only 23 percent of registered voters participated in this election.
  23. The Avenue at Tower City near felt like a great concept from the start. In fact I believe it killed all retail that remained on Euclid Ave. Th only hope I had for this mall was when the promised casino was to be built along the river. If the Higbee building and new casino remained the Mal could have been used as a retail component similar to Caesar's and The Forum Shops.
  24. Isn't The Mather part of The GLSC?
  25. I am not sure what the purpose of this interview was. Obviously the reporter was doubting any bid from Ohio as unlikely. Between The Plain Dealer and CNBC asking why the privacy to their bid, I believe this turns off Amazon from seeing Cleveland as it's potential HQ2. I hope I am wrong and that Cleveland is awarded the prize.
