Ohio Turnpike
It already is a monopoly. But since the government can't sue itself for antitrust violations in having a controlling share of a transportation market, nobody seems to question its monopoly as bad. I thought we favored the free market in this country, where the government's power is limited. It never ceases to amaze me how we view public policy with a double standard in this country.... private ownership of railroad tracks is a do or die requirement, whereas private ownership of a given highway is a greedy, monopolistic act. You mean just like government has a monopoly on police and fire service?

Columbus: Huntington Park (Clippers ballpark)
Columbus was a minor league affliate with St Louis and Pittsburgh (The switch between the two clubs happened in the early 50s...I think) before the "empty 70s" and the return of baseball with the Clippers.

Except it only works when referencing teams that Dikta has been with (Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans).

Best quotes from Baton Rouge musicians
I bagged a Werewolf groupie (BR cover band) once. I was drunk and she was hefty, which I didn't realize until she was already naked. I was very unhappy, so now Dennis' couch smells like fat girl snatch and infinite sadness... I heard a pretty awesome quote today at lunch. Some woman was having a conversation on her cellphone the entire time she was there, completely ignoring the person in the booth with her as well as everyone else in the restraunt. Out of the blue I heard this: "All the bitches are here in town, but we're importing the sperm from Ireland."

Columbus: Huntington Park (Clippers ballpark)
So how long is Pittsburgh, Cincy, Cleveland, and Detroit's contracts with their current cities?

Where you went to school, what do you do?
I was wondering where you've been. :-) As for Columbusguy's question about Economics & Geography. If you're interested in working out computations, you can focus on Ecomomic Geography @ OSU. But as I learned the hard way, they won't provide you the contacts into ODOT, MORPC, nor the City of Columbus. You will have to make your own way into those groups.

Republican Roll Call!
You're correct. There has yet to be a UrbanOhio photothread on Poland, Ohio (just south of Youngstown) We should ask for volunteers to correct this slight.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News

What Columbus needs
You mean Delaware, with Hoover, O'Shaunacesy, and Delaware (to go along with Alum Creek).

Meijer
Yes, I would call myself a hardcore "foodie". I was just wondering what exactly kind of store was Meijer. No, that is not factoring into my moving there. Wouldn't sweat it. As an ex-pat Ohioan living near the Gulf Coast, I wouldn't mind a Meijers, or even a Kroger. I've stated several times, in various threads on this board, over the 2 years I've lived in BR, that the markets here are so bad, that I consider going to WalMart as an upgrade over their competitors.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
For many years Ohio State refused to play any other school in Ohio (Woody Hayes tradition?). It wasn't till some state rep got involved in the 1990s that OSU started scheduling MAC (and Cincy) teams to come to Columbus (going back to the state getting involved, someone thought it would be better for OSU to pay in-state schools to lose in C-bus than out-of-state schools). And also don't forget the 40+ year feud between UC and OSU because UC defeated OSU's greatest basketball team (Lucas, Havalick, & Knight) in back-to-back years. That's on Ohio State.

Peak Oil
This was in the Sunday paper down here along the eastern edge of "oil country." http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/business/3872607.html?showAll=y&c=y Technology could recover 'stranded' oil By TED GRIGGS Advocate business writer Published: Sep 8, 2006 The U.S. Department of Energy calls it a “Game Changer,” a technological breakthrough capable of doubling the amount of oil a field can produce by conventional methods. Current production methods leave two-thirds of a reservoir’s oil below ground, or stranded, according to DOE. In Louisiana alone, 12.1 billion barrels of oil are stranded onshore; nationwide, 374 billion barrels of oil are considered stranded. A process developed by Dandina N. Rao, an LSU petroleum engineering professor, would allow energy companies to recover 65 percent to 90 percent of the stranded oil. At today’s prices, that would be at least $550 billion worth of oil, just in Louisiana.

What Columbus needs
It's needed that for 30 years now. Look at our last 5 mayors; Stensenbrenner, Moody, Reinhart, Lusukita, and now Coleman. Columbus would love be big-time/prime-time but prefers steady, quiet confidence while going Jeckel & Hyde with Cincy and Cleveland (some days we like to be under the other C-cities radars, other days we like to bitch-slap them)
