Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
If trajectories continue as they have been, Columbus will soon become the largest metro and largest economy in the state, and may continue to grow until it's the clear alpha city in the state (a title which I would say is currently up for grabs among all 3Cs). My belief is Columbus is in a race against the clock to build transit in order to change its development patterns and densify. None of us may be around to see the negative impacts of the city not doing that, but all the annexation of low-density areas in the past was a gambit that must be dealt with before the outer city neighborhoods age.

I don't think you can make this claim without justification. It could be that immigration from Ohio lit a fire that caused the rest.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
That was the latest data I could find when I did that analysis. I wasn't trying to knock Columbus anymore than you guys are trying to knock other Ohio cities (at least I don't think you are). Since Columbus's positive domestic migration was mentioned in comparison to other Ohio cities, I was pointing out an explanation for Columbus's status as the Ohio-outlier in that respect. It's the one city drawing from all the others, leading to its positive domestic migration. Maybe it's not reliant on the other Ohio cities for that anymore, but it was the last time I looked into it.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Columbus's domestic migration is only positive due to intra-Ohio migration. Without it, it would be slightly negative. I think this helps explain your observation that what's happening in the rest of the state is not happening in Columbus; a significant portion of Columbus's growth comes from out-migration in the rest of the state. https://www.urbanohio.com/forum/index.php/topic,10856.msg824352.html#msg824352

Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
They opened a distribution location in Queensgate with a pending A1C license (brewery license), which would allow them to open a tap room within 1 mile. The first beer I bought from Platform was so bad I wouldn't finish the 6-pack. I don't know if it was an off batch or what. Since then, I've tried a few more, some of which were pretty good. They seem to be one of the more experimental-yet-mainstream breweries in the state, along with Jackie-O's and Rhinegeist. This could be the next stage of the microbrewery industry; breweries with successful regional distribution beginning to locate taprooms and satellite breweries in other cities. Which will then make it harder for start-ups who haven't honed their craft to enter the market, when there's a known, high-quality brewery opening down the street.

It would be nice to see more individual parcels developed instead of all the superblocks.

US Economy: News & Discussion
They're not going to pay for themselves... Congress will get entitlement reform done by March, and that will be where the cost is picked up. Personally, I think any tax cut that isn't budget neutral at least is wrong. Especially from deficit hawks. But entitlement reform is going to be next.... followed by an infrastructure bill that will spend trillions so it won't matter. It's setting the stage for Democrats to post huge wins over a couple election cycles. The safety-net cuts will be undone, but Democrats will be cornered into paying for these programs by Republicans who suddenly remember they care about the deficit. And since people like programs but don't like paying for them, Republicans will be swept into office again to repeat the back-and-forth cycle.

Yeah, Northside housing has gone off like a rocket in the past couple years.

Cincinnati: Western Hills Viaduct
Not saying you're wrong, but why is that? As the cost of goods goes up due to inflation, the amount of sales tax should increase linearly, no? I guess since wages lag, spending may go down when costs go up. But that also affects the payroll tax. The main disadvantage that is obvious to me is that sales are more volatile than payroll. Also, the sales tax is regressive. Seems to me they should use a hybrid of both, but that seems unlikely.

Airline Industry News and Discussion
This rule change is especially egregious because the choice of what to do with your baggage is often directly tied to federal laws regarding what you can carry-on or must check.

^^ Springdale is a city; Springfield is a township. Finneytown is, in fact, a part of Springfield Township.

AI / Machine Learning
I tried the Novice one. I got 21 wins, 13 ties, 16 losses. Was able to use the machine's learning process against it. Tried to appear like I was playing by a pattern, then switching it up based on how I predicted the computer would act. Seems like the machine is not going so meta in its analysis, but maybe over more rounds it gets there.

Cincinnati: West End: TQL Stadium
So Ohio can only support 1 MLS team? Hmm, not that Cleveland is in the running, but there is a wide spread between NEO and SWO. Yeah, that makes no sense. It was way after FCC was bidding to join MLS that it came out that the Crew might leave Columbus. Brutus, did you at that point view Ohio as "already covered" by the Crew?

Walkable Communities
Speculating a bit here, but if motorists yielded to people walking when they were supposed to (e.g. crossing at an intersection), it would be more convenient to cross legally and there would be less incentive to run across busy lanes of traffic. As things are, even at marked crosswalks it seems like motorists only stop when there is a traffic light. Most of the "jaywalking" I see in my neighborhood is actually motorists parking, then jaywalking to get to the restaurant or house or whatever they were driving to.

Cincinnati: West End: TQL Stadium
If the Lindner family picks up real estate interest in the West End, maybe the Cincy blue bloods will get more interested in intercity train service. #OneCanHope In any case, a stadium in the West End would help bridge the gap between Union Terminal and OTR/CBD. Perhaps when development finishes filling in between the "Gateway Corridor" and Findlay Market, it would start branching over to Union Terminal.

Walkable Communities
Even on the most "walkable" streets in Ohio, I do not make use of unmarked crosswalks (every corner technically has a crosswalk unless otherwise marked), unless the street is 100% clear of vehicular traffic. It's just not worth having someone want to get into a fistfight with you, or worse get hit because the motorist is being criminally negligent. Call me crazy, but it seems like something is deeply wrong with the culture when we're operating on this might-makes-right, extralegal rule which is contrary to the written law.

If you look at the other deals out there for the other cities, their teams are not bringing anywhere near as much to the table as the Cincinnati group. People need to take a deep breath and not be stupid on this. Um, what? You're the one that shared this article with me: http://www.wcpo.com/news/insider/fc-cincinnati-wants-75m-heres-what-other-cities-will-kick-in-for-new-mls-stadiums

Cincinnati: West End: TQL Stadium
Oakley as a stadium site is almost 100% a non-starter for me. The only exception would be if it came along with BRT or LRT, full stop. I think the city is in a position to request money from the team owners for this cause, with a city match to get it done. (Think along the lines of the Detroit streetcar.) But I would be willing to compromise on this and have this be the "infrastructure" provided for the stadium. Removing bumpouts and taking away people's yards for an extra lane on Madison, though? Total non-starter. If that's what it takes to get an MLS team, screw the MLS. (Side note: Claiming the owners are willing to 100% fund the stadium when they won't be funding the parking garage is a dirty semantic trick none of us should let them get away with.) It's too late to have these discussions, though. I guess something like these discussions has been taking place for months in smoky backrooms, but it's too late to get sufficient public input prior to the MLS deadline. I can't support a stadium plan that involves public financing for this round of expansion. Waiting until after the November election to discuss public funding, when the deadline is mid-December, is an irredeemable folly.

So much for those sidewalk bump-outs and sharrows that at least attempted to make the area a bit more pedestrian and bike friendly. There is no attempt in this plan to make the development walkable, transit-accessible, or new urbanist in any way. No pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks, either, as far as I can tell. So they are removing bumpouts for the "urban stadium" site. ;D And how exactly are they planning on converting this stretch of Madison to 5 lanes? https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1593992,-84.4197918,151m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!17m1!1e1 This couldn't be more of a lemon if someone were intentionally making it one. They should just put this thing in West Chester or Mason at this point. How about here: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.3720471,-84.3789773,599m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!17m1!1e1
