  1. It might just be a bunch of unfortunate coincidences, but I do think it's the NBD that has had the highest ratio of closures to openings over the past few years. (At least for neighborhoods that have seen a significant number of new businesses.) Maybe it's off topic, but I think the health of EWH's NBD will have a huge effect on development in Evanston.
  2. I don't see this at all. Evanston (or the bulk of it) is completely cut off from the Wasson Way right-of-way by I-71, and even if it weren't I think the impact of a bike trail on development fades pretty quickly after you get a couple blocks away from the trail. I think Evanston will continue to see development, as the EWH business district improves (assuming it can keep businesses open; it seems like the shakiest NBD in the city) and people are increasingly priced out of using Oakley as their Hyde Park alternative. Note: I'm not trying to be a downer on EWH, but there seems to be an issue right now of people opening businesses there that can't be sustained. Like a lot of people want to get in early before the neighborhood catches fire, only to find that there's not enough fire yet to keep all these new businesses open.
  3. It seems like a massive troll. Like, Cincinnati is trolled because the metro obviously prefers Skyline. And the rest of the state is trolled because it's a Cincinnati chili chain (which itself would be controversial) and isn't even available in most of the state. A+ trolling, Food & Wine.
  4. These places sound ~iNtElLeCtUaL~ Will we finally unify mechanics and relativity? Are butchered cows behind the big bang? Can't wait to find out.
  5. Wonder how long until the arena needs to remove the US Bank brand from its website and social media.
  6. If you can use SHPs, you can get the MSA ones here: https://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/shapefiles/index.php?year=2010&layergroup=Core+Based+Statistical+Areas
  7. You can combine the areas of constituent counties.
  8. Do you mean in their statement of where it's sourced? Or??
  9. ^ Yeah, Top Gun opened during the few-years stretch that my family had season passes to KI. I rode it the first day it opened, and it was really disappointing. The Raptor was not disappointing, which is probably why I convinced my dad to buy our pic, lol. I think the Raptor was my favorite ride at CP as well, although I remember being impressed with the Magnum. Lots more negative-g sensation than I'd ever felt before, combined with the visual effect of looking almost like you were dropping into the lake made the Magnum really exciting.
  10. I was doing some spring late summer cleaning yesterday, and I found a ride picture of me and my dad on the Raptor from the mid-90s. "Kick the Sky!!"
  11. Pretty sure the last time I was in there it was still Riverfront Coliseum. I say let's keep monitoring this, and if no big corporations bite we can pool together the meager funds to give it UrbanOhio branding. "UrbanOhio.com Presents: Riverfront Coliseum"? Or do we need to throw an @ in there? Or Ye Olde or something?

There are also very few businesses catering to 2nd & 3rd shift workers in Europe.

Drive-thrus lead to more and often wider driveways (a business which might only have one driveway instead has two), leading to more potential conflict points between cars and bikes/pedestrians. The more driveways a street has, the more dangerous it is for vulnerable road users. They also encourage idling vehicles, which is terrible for air quality.
  14. In my neighborhood in Dayton last summer, they did water maintenance, gas maintenance, and then repaved almost every street, all within a few months. It was painful while they were doing all the work, but in the end it was pretty great to get smooth streets all over. Northside is an absolute disaster. I have family members that live in Northside on one of the streets @NsideProp listed and up the hill on Hamilton. There was no effort to make Hamilton smooth after the utility work a couple years ago; there are just long bumpy paths where the pavement was cut to access pipes. After the city took on a bunch of debt to resurface streets, you'd think the whole city would be smooth.
  15. The Oakley Station developers are going to tear down and redevelop the Millenium site? Oh my.
  16. I've always felt like they were shooting from the hip. The variety of beer they package and distribute is insane. And while I've had some really good beers from them, I've also had a couple of the very worst beers I've ever had from them. I won't buy AB unless really in a pinch, so I doubt I will be buying much Platform anymore. I wonder if they'll still get the same collaborators wanting to work with them (e.g. Streetside in Cincy has collaborated with them a number of times).
  17. Being restricted to two parties sets the groundwork for creating a menu of wedge issues to cobble together a winning coalition. Neither party is going to adhere to a coherent political philosophy (certainly not for a sustained period of time, anyhow). We would need to reform our voting system to something other than first-past-the-post, and possibly move toward proportional representation, to develop an actual conservative party. For now, what passes as "conservative" is whatever the Republican Party and right wing media decide to call conservative.
  18. I didn't intend for my list to be exhaustive.
  19. What even are the terms Trump wants China to abide by? Has he articulated them? All I really see is a vague notion of "tough on China" and "America first" which is more Reality TV than reasoned policy. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to tariffs if they were conditioned on things like abiding by environmental and labor standards.
  20. I know it's not really in the language of city, county, or state engineers, but if they wanted to turn the parking lanes into bus lanes they could change the grade of those lanes (at least between intersections) to be halfway between sidewalk- and street-grade. That would probably calm traffic to an even higher degree than the permanent parking lanes. And given that buses aren't all that frequent, it would be sort of like having bumpouts. I don't think anyone should spend time worrying about losing the parking lanes, though. It's hard to imagine a serious proposal to get rid of all those parking spots.
  21. I'd guess tariffs have lowered imports, which would lower freight hauling, which would lower railroad traffic.
  22. BBC says it's willing to support a full repeal of the earnings tax if it's replaced by a sales tax of .7% or greater. Is there anything in this charter amendment to enforce that >.7% demand? Additionally, is that .7% exclusively for Metro/bus service or does it include the infrastructure bundle that has had some buzz? If it's bundled, then that's what, maybe .5% for bus service? Is that even an improvement on the present funding situation? I'm worried BBC is getting taken for a ride, so to speak.
  23. We also lost The Dock night club.

I'm feeling rattled by the Dayton shooting. I live a few hundred feet away, and it woke me up. Fortunately I decided to call it an early night instead of going out. A friend of a friend was injured, but apparently not life-threateningly. Hoping I don't hear anything worse as far as personal connections go over the next several hours/days.
  25. I don't even understand the point of keeping the old structure if you're just going to drain it of all its character. I thought they wanted the Anna Louise Inn because it was a nice old building that would make for a quaint hotel, but there's nothing quaint about any of that mess.
