  1. The first thing I think of when I go to Manhattan: Where’s the outlet mall? :)
  2. How are Tower City and the Galleria working out? Yet building Lodi near downtown will now work. This structure will be totally catered to suburbanites driving in and out. This will not be a tourist destination for people from other cities. Attractions built around it will be Burger Kings and gas stations. Some of you are fooling yourselves into thinking this will be anything urban or attractive. This is a dressed up WalMart strip center. It shouldn’t get a pass because it will create low-paying jobs.
  3. Prime lakefront property or not, this is an exurban development on the footstep of downtown. Not quite sure why this should get a pass by some on here. You guys should actually check out what Horizon builds. Mostly strip outlet centers off of Interstates. Stuff that is a notch above a WalMart Supercenter. That being said it will struggle to see the light of day. This isn’t a high-end outlet mall. It’s standard retail which is fighting Amazon and the like tooth and nail, not to mention Aurora and Lodi. So it’s probably much ado about nothing. Also a public-private partnership for an indoor strip mall? Really?
  4. If a multi-million dollar revenue guarantee helps to keep a regional market relevant globally then even re-upping the contract can still be a value.
  5. Well it is easier to do nothing, I suppose. Maryland has as revenue guarantee of $5 million+ on the daily Balt/Wash British Airways flight. They see still the value in re-upping it. Look, some of you guys are getting what you want. Cleveland is being frugal and it’s getting a warranted service level. So I guess it is what it is.
  6. Pittsburgh now has non-stop widebody service to London, Paris and Frankfurt. Two of the three Euro carriers are on full-service, global partnership airlines. PIT also has a non-stop cargo flight to Doha and even a non-stop student charter to Shanghai. Meanwhile Cleveland has non-stop service to Iceland (after Pittsburgh already had service) in an elongated 737 with hopes that Icelandair might bring an occasional 757 this fall/winter. No full service, global connections either. Clearly one airport authority is working harder to secure internatonal service. There is no denying it. Pugu is passionate but correct, it should be a bad day for those running Hopkins. Is it actually though? I have my doubts people at City Hall even know or care. It’s a bad day for Cleveland but horrific for Columbus. Hard to think CMH can secure anything across the pond now in the next few years at least.

The national media is in real denial about this mediocrity. The Lakers aren't the Sixers or C's. It's quite the bricklaying crew Magic has assembled. Trying to figure who the #2 scoring options is difficult. Kevin Love is still a better option than anyone on the current Lakers roster. Maybe one of the younger guys will shine. They will need to in order to be a top-4 seed in the West. Being the 2018 version of the '89 Detroit Pistons won't work against GSW. Hell by '91 the Bulls figured those Pistons out. I think they understand they won’t be winning it this year. But there’s at least a decent chance that 2 of Ball/Kuzma/Hart/Ingram turn out to be borderline all-stars. Then they can add someone in next year’s stacked free agent class. The Lakers will most likely be very good in 2019 and it will be very annoying. I think it's weird that Magic couldn't get it done this year. Clearly, Magic was betting on PG13 and Kawhi. Cavs in 2014 and obviously the Heat in 2010 were better than the current Lakers roster. LeBron will be 35 in the 2019-20 season. Tick, tock. National media is mostly ignoring this issue too pretending he will go on forever. We'll see. Oh, and also the NBA was up for grabs every other time LeBron left. Not this time. Magic should set up a meeting with his old coach to see how it's done.
  8. It's more disturbing Euros call it "hooliganism". Hooliganism, to me, is an 0-16 parade. No, the period was a violent mess which hurt the Euro leagues popularity in general at the time. Anyway, I'll stop, we're drifting away from MLS stuff.
  9. In Europe, particularly England, this happened organically, as access was often restricted and specific to which street your stand was adjacent to. So, neighbors at home were oft neighbors at the game, with their own chants, etc. Yeah, I just don't get why the need to divide fans following a single team. Didn't those clubs lead to the violence English football had in the 80s? It's great the Euros do this, I'm glad (outside of MLS) we don't. No, no, no. Some of them certainly partook in violence... and some of the firms were aggressive, but that violent nature actually formed some of the firms/clubs - not the other way around Oh I didn't know that. There's was so much violence and death at English games during the 80s I'm sure there was plenty of blame to go around. If the inter-team clubs stemmed from this, that's great. Looking at the DCU situation it seems to be creating more division than unity though.

  12. I don't get it either. I mostly go to NBA games where there are no fan clubs. Those MLS clubs acquire large blocks of season tickets though so it's nothing ownership can ignore. As for DC, Captials fans are worse than DCU. My daughters plays at their practice facility. Fans soooooooooo smarmy and uptight. It's like no laughing or fun is allowed. Why I attend Wizards games. A completely opposite experience except when LeBron rolls to town. :)
  13. Well, DCU is driving away the Latino community by forcing the hand of their two largest fan clubs to come under the umbrella of the club that caters to a much whiter community. Those clubs -- the District Ultras and Barra Brava DCU -- had a march before the opening of the game at Audi. This can't help attendance going forward. I do notice some MLS franchises are going to war a bit with Latinos about general rowdiness and off-color chants. The league needs to be careful how they thread this needle if they want attendance numbers to keep climbing.

Wow, Popovich, wow! He put the screws to the Lakers even if it's just for one year.
  15. The old Parmadale orphanage complex is coming down to create a large park in the center of the suburb. https://www.cleveland.com/parma/index.ssf/2018/07/cuyahoga_county_awards_13_mill.html Also, saw this in the article: The (Parma) Board of Control's recently awarded funding amount also includes the demolition of four blighted Parma properties located at 7259 Ridge Road, 11599 Kader Ave., 4418 Pershing Ave. and 7407 Dorothy Ave Haven't had a chance to look to see if any of those properties are little gems. Note: Looks like this belong in the Beyond the 3 C's: Demolition. My bad. Mods feel free to move.
  16. IKEA seems to be done constructing new Super Wal-Mart style box stores, at least in the US. I doubt it's them too.

As a Clevelander who had a Croat step father: Vive la France! 8)
  18. Indians up 17-0 on the Reds in the 4th. Can the bullpen blow this lead? I say there’s a 30% chance! :)

That would be interesting, but a problem I see occurring is that if the goalie was removed from the game, you would have field players who are acting as goalies. This would inevitably lead to those players using their hands when they can't stop the shot with their feet or heads, so you would give up a PK. Then what? Do they get a red card, get sent off, and then have a another position player come in to try to stop the penalty without using their hands? Either way, the games would probably often end with a hand ball in the box penalty kick. Rules would have to be changed a bit especially for balls that go out of bounds around the goal but I'm not quite sure why players would need to use their hands. When a goalie is pulled in hockey, nobody plays goalie, that's the inherit risk of pulling the position to add the extra offensive player. If it's too complicated then remove the (typically) three defenders and play seven-on-seven. I know I'm making this sound too simple but there are ways to adjust the game to increase scoring within those 120 minutes. I'm all for changing the rules to encourage wins brought about by on-field success, and not the penalty spot. But there's a huge difference between hockey and soccer. In hockey the goalie only leaves his spot when they are down a goal with less than 2 minutes left (usually much later in the game: 1 minute or so left). He doesn't leave in overtime and just let 5 v 6 all OT. Another goal against them in the waning seconds of the game doesn't really matter if they are going to lose anyway. Soccer employs the same tactic. If there is a corner with less than a minute left, and the team taking the corner is down 1 goal, they will pull their goalie and have him try to score a goal. I totally understand your point. My point is that no one actually plays goalie while the goalie is pulled. Again FIFA would have to play around with the rules a bit to eliminate any incentive for someone to be a "goalie". This is never going to happen anyway! ;D

Sure there's pressure, no doubt. I agree there is skill but I think it's more akin to reading into a poker player eyes because reaction time to the set kick is almost zero. In a lot of ways the goalie and player are just guessing, guess the wrong way and you lose, so it is mostly luck/randomness. Maybe you would prefer both teams shooting on an empty goal from like 70 yards away? That would be kind of cool. Or play the 2nd OT with no goalie.
  22. AmrapinVA replied to ryanlammi's post in a topic in Sports Talk
Right, they play 120 minutes of nip and tuck soccer just to hope a goalie falls into the opposite direction of a set kick. Truly an awful way to end it. Hockey has experimented with three on three in OT to open up scoring chances. Not quite sure what the solution for FIFA is but PKs are just lame. Lame? PK's are freaking exciting as hell! It’s exciting because the result is almost completely random. But what’s the point of playing the previous 120 minutes just to decide a result by randomness? To me, lame. I can tell you though it's not random. It's skill along with, more importantly, who can handle the pressure. I can assure you that the PK situation at that level is an insane amount of pressure. Lame was too harsh a word and I apologize about this. My comments weren't meant to troll. I enjoy the Cup except for PKs and it's increasing Eurocenticity come playoff time. I'm an old dude who can remember when the World Cup playoffs included a bit more of the world back in the 1990s and early 2000s. I know the Final will highlight some of the best players in the sport but France vs. England is akin to Mets vs. Yankees or Dodgers vs. Angels. Also, the chart about mileage isn't really a complete metric. Basketball players only travel 2-3 miles but they spend almost the entire time running at all positions. It's such a workout that if a NBA/FIBA game lasted 90 minutes nobody would play the sport. It's like comparing the marathon to a 500-yard race. Both are equally athletic but in different ways. As a side note, I highly doubt the goalie gets close to 7 miles in a game.
