Cincinnati: OTR: Vine Street
I wonder what will happen to the existing SCPA building once the new one is built. I thought I remember hearing somewhere that when CPS bought the building part of the contract was to keep it a school for a long period of time, even after SCPA decides to move out.

I feel the frustration. My car got hit by a flying 40 at the intersection of E. Clifton and Vine last saturday. Put a nice size dent on the door.

Butler County: Development and News
This isn't New Urbanism. New Urbanism stresses the importance of infill development first. Fixing up and replacing what we already have (look no further than City West). Hence the word Urbanism. This is New Suburbanism. If this was really Urbanism then you would be able to walk to the transit stop, which isn't there, or walk to the gocery store, which isn't there, or maybe have the choice of walking to more than just 3 restaurants or so without worrying about the kid driving the honda civic with loud exhausts running you over with his rap music blasting. All this is is just some condos in a mall.

Warren County growth
nice. lets spend nearly half a billion dollars, and with certain budget overruns etc., we're lookin at about the same cost as what it would of been to get rail (even though the ballot called for 2 billion, but that was also for all new bus routes, bus stops, etc.). and the sad thing is the same law makers that won't think twice about giving the public funds for this project are the same ones that don't want rail. why doesn't half a billion in new highway funds ever go on the ballot?

Cincinnati: Greenhills: DeWitt Landing
Since i just finished up a 10 week study on Greenhills i have a little info on these new houses. As of the begining of this month, that was the last time i was out there, they had 1 of the homes pretty much finished and opened up for tours, they also had the foundation for 2 other homes. I'd look for this trend to continue throughout more of Greenhills. I talked to the mayor a couple of times and the village is really progressive in buying up old and dilapadated properties throughout the village, mostly those old barrick style apartment buildings, and building new affordable homes in their places. Although the quality of the new homes are not the greatest and they are rather small, i think this can turn out to be a good example of a public-private cooperation from all sides for the betterment of the community.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: University Park Apts/Calhoun Street Marketplace
No I'm sorry its not a Baja Fresh. For some reason the name Salsaritos is coming to mind. And yeah the prices for these stores are going to be a little bit too much. Why can't Taco Bell put a new store in there like the one at OU, or Hardees and Boston Market, those places I could afford to eat at most of the time. And the Chicago Gyro place at the corner of McMillan and West Clifton does have some pretty damn good food, and good prices.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: University Park Apts/Calhoun Street Marketplace
I was looking into the apartments in the new Calhoun St. development on campus side and I got a list of the retailers there. Panera Bread Fifth Third Bank Berarcat Hall of Fame Cafe Ben and Jerry's (but there's a Cold Stone across the street) Some sort of Mexican restaurant, but I forget the name of it A wrap place, but I also forgot the name of that one. And finally a UPS Store They did tell me that they had 2 more retail spots available and they were currently working on having them filled by September, but didn't give me any names. And for the pricing of the apartments. A one bedroom was around $800 a month, and a 2 bedroom for 2 people was around $600 a month per person. They come fully furnished and the price includes all utilities, including cable, internet, etc. I signed up to take a tour of them in February, so I'll make sure I take some pics.

Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
I think this recent weather would help benefit the midwest high speed rail instead of just the local proposed light rail lines. If the proposed midwest rail was smart they would advertise using the storm and the mass air delays to their advantage. Saying something like "No three day delays on the tracks, its always running" and "Your baggage won't be missing for weeks since it's riding with you." If we could just get the people to ride the high speed statewide lines then they would realize how efficent and clean it is, therefore, they would be in total support for the local lines.

Covington, KY: The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge
sounds like typical cincy thinking to me. don't try to be different, don't stand out, don't take any risks. it really wouldn't surprise me to see Liebeskind just drop the whole thing and this end up as another coulda, shoulda, woulda thing. the majority of the people in this area really don't understand how lucky we are to have these type of things. everyday i see a crap load of people from out of town walking through the daap building and the Vontz Center that aren't even from anywhere around this area not to mention we also have a pritzker prize winning building downtown. when are we gonna wake up and realize that were not gonna see any growth or progress from sitting back and building cookie cutters. Bilboa, Chicago, and Copenhagen have not become world tourist destinations over the last few years because of building structures that fit in with everything else, they took chances and built structures that cause controversy, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think cincy has a choice, to continue at the rate we've been going over the last 50 years or so, or take some risks and get this thing done quick and use this as a center piece for a hopefully continued openess to all things different and unique in this city (besides just the architecture).

Cincinnati: I-71 Improvements / Uptown Access Project (MLK Interchange)
i don't know how much of this i'm allowed to talk about but i work for the firm that just finished up all the data collection (actually the very last of the turning movement counters is sitting on my desk right now ready to be picked up) and there already is a plan for the MLK interchange. the design has been finished for quite some time now. there is room to put in an interchange without doing any real damage, all there is left to do now is find the funding. but yeah they really need an exit there bad, the traffic counts last week saw 200,000 cars on the south 71 taft exit in 6 days.

Portsmouth, OH
Oh and I forgot to add, it was home to the Portsmouth Spartans who became the Detroit Lions, not the Packers. They just brag about how they beat the Packers.
-
Portsmouth, OH
My hometown. Ha. Thanks for reminding me Summit Street, I gotta go home next weekend for a wedding, nice job of getting the important stuff though. Portsmouth reminds me of a rustbelt town more than an appalachia type of town-minus the hicks and monster trucks running around. Riverviewer, I don't know if you know but the big-ass bridge got knocked down a couple of summers ago. Hopefully one of these days the new one will open, but its not nearly as cool looking as the old one. Grasscat, those buildings were just recently bought last year by the city to house the new city municipal building. They paid 2.5 Million dollars for that dump that has caught on fire twice. My father is a councilman and the frontrunner for the next mayorial election and is fighting hard to build elsewhere downtown. I'm kinda mixed on my feelings of Portsmouth. Part of me wants to go back home when i get out of school and try my magic to get it turned around with my father and the other half of me says that I'm too good and I have better things to do (in a sarcastic way)than to go back. Once again good pics.

Here we go again. What the hell are they gonna do about the canyon. Just rip out the whole entire island section that is left.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
i forgot to add another link for the proposed and updated passanger rail site http://ohioansforpassengerrail.com/

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
it is my dream to see passanger rail service in ohio and some form of mass transit in cincy and c-bus before i die (and keep in mind i'm only 21). but with the current list of politicans who voted down the support of rail service in ohio winning thier offices back Boehner, Hamilton Chabot, Cincinnati Gillmor, Port Clinton Hobson, Springfield Oxley, Findlay Portman, Cincinnati Pryce, Columbus Regula, Canton Tiberi, Columbus Turner, Dayton i don't see this happening anytime in the foreseeable future. by the way didn't you forget that bringing passenger rail will just bring all the the violence and people in the inner cities to the suburbs.

Metro Cincinnati: Road & Highway News
This is kinda off-topic but traffic counting sucks bad. I currently have to do them right now cuause i'm the co-op. Nothing sucks worse than siting in your car for 2 hours and hitting a button 6,000 times.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
I don't know if I'll be able to attended or not but the next Fountain Square meeting with the unvailing of the new plans is tonight at the old Crowne Plaza. Hopefully we can get some new renderings here on the board in the next few days. Urbanists and 3CDC An Evening with Stephen Leeper on the Future of Fountain Square [email protected] A year and a half ago, the Urbanists introduced to the public John Alschuler's Center City vision. With the help of organizations like Cincinnati Tomorrow, Downtown Residents Council, Build Cincinnati, the Cincinnatus Society and the Urbanists, Alschuler's vision has lead to the formation of 3CDC and the recruitment of its first CEO, Stephen Leeper. This new development corporation caused quite a stir with plans to redesign Fountain Square and Washington Park, two of Cincinnati's most cherished public spaces. Now, after incorporating feedback from two very public forums on the new plan for Fountain Square, 3CDC is ready to unveil the revised Fountain Square plan to the Urbanists. On September 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the NEXT Hotel (formerly the Crowne Plaza), you'll get the first chance to offer insights on, or ask question about, the new plan. Who should the square be designed for--urban dwellers or tourists? Why do they have to move the Fountain for $2.3 million (it's not for aesthetics)? Would you rather see retail or al fresco dining on the square? What are the plans for the Westin atrium--wouldn't a big bookstore/cafe be nice? Whatever your passion, come connect with other Urbanists and share with Stephen Leeper your vision for the heart of our downtown. Christine Schoonover has generously offered to provide complimentary food and drink so we can settle in for a nice chat with Mr. Leeper. We hope to see you all there. --i-- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHO: URBANISTS MEETING An Evening with Stephen Leeper of 3CDC TOPIC: Discuss the Future of Fountain Square DATE: Wednesday, September 29, 2004 TIME: 6-8 pm LOCATION: NEXT Hotel and Residences 15 W. 6th St. DOWNTOWN Cincinnati, OH 45202

Metro Cincinnati: Road & Highway News
This is really starting to make me sick. Why should my hard earned pay check that is being taxed go toward the freakin burbs. I'm all for taxes and raising them if it is for the betterment of society, but how does this better myself and the other 1.9 million or so people that don't use that stretch of highway. I know people around me are getting tired of me saying transit this transit that, but come on by 2008 the traffic will be back to where it was before. People and new businesses aren't attracted here because of a new 20 lane highway highway in suburbia, they're attracted to quality of life things like transit or a crazy new bridge designed downtown the is actually NEEDED or maybe the roof over Ft. Washington Way to hide it. And why should we be paying for walls in the backyards of people's houses. I have loud neighbors so I think the people in West Chester should pay for a wall to be put up in my yard. If its too loud you shouldn't have moved there.

Where did you find Urbanohio????
I was doing a report on the Cincinnati riverfront transit center and the Fort Washington Way reconstruction when I came across Cincinnati Transit. From there I saw the links to CincinnatiUprise and came across SSP. Although I never really posted much on SSP I still checked it out quite frequently and came across this place when it opened up.

City Nicknames
this topic made me think of some of the nicknames for the colleges in Ohio: Kent read, kent write, Kent State Wright State, wrong college bgSTDu UC=University of Convicts or Under Construction OSU people say Ann Arbor is a whore so the Michigan people say Columbus is a fag, but I think that's a pretty stupid one.
