Cincinnati: Schoolhouse Lofts (E. Walnut Hills)
This is some great news. Since my move to Cincinnati a couple of years ago I've always found East Wallnut Hills a very promising place. The Woodburn business district has some very great buildings and I believe it will soon be the new trendy place to live in town. By the way do any of you know if Desalles Plaza is done yet. Last time I drove by it looked to still be under construction and I'd like to try some of the restaurants there.

A few crappy pictures of Portsmouth murals
Thats not really an infill project but whats left of the building after they had destroyed most of it. All of the buildings around it are now all connected as a retirement home. The building that was there was in too bad of condition to save it so they just build a courtyard there and kept the facade to contine the asthetics from the steet. I think of it as a pretty good idea myself, unlike just tearing it down and putting a parking lot there.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
This is my first opinion on the new Square and I am very pleased at the prelimenary sketches. The new Square has some of the qualities that many well-used parks through out the world have: movable chairs, playful sculptures, touchable water features, and small cafes. These amenities support human use and encourage it. The best thing I saw in those sketches, even though many would say it's just a small thing, is the the movable chair. Movable chairs allow people to choose where and with whom they want to sit, giving them a sense of freedom. People feel more at ease in places that give them such choices, and they will choose to use those places again and again. The new Square does not seem to have the qualities of parks that are never used such as trying to achieve excellence in architecture and public space. Many of the new parks seem to care more about "design as art" instead of the people which make the park.

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
Personally I hope they don't do anything at all. I know that sounds really bad but adding new lanes or a new bigger bridge will not make traffic any better, only worse. There was a recent study done by UC-Berkeley and it found that for every 10 percent increase in roadway capacity, traffic increased 9 percent. People will see the new bigger roadway and start driving on it if they haven't before, leading back to where we are now. My ideal solution is just take the money that it would cost to add a new bridge or lanes and invest in alternative transit such as rail or carpool lanes. The alternative transit solution would also create new jobs. For every billion dollars reallocated from road-building to transit creates seven thousand jobs. The proposed plan is asking for $750 million that would equal to roughly 5,500 new jobs to Cincinnati's economy and tax base. Oh well, I know it will never happen this way because the people in Indian Hill that controll this area will never give up their SUVs and ride the train with the poor people from downtown. It's time for me to shut up now.

Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame
The new dugout shop is now open in the same building as the muesem and its quite impressive. Most of the store has 3 storing ceilings with alot of old relics in it. You can even purchase some of the old equipment. I can't wait till the rest of it opens along with the banks, then we'll have one of the best parks.

Cincinnati: Ohio River Bike Trail
This really doesn't have much to do about Ohio's bike trails but there was an article on cyburbia not to long ago about a bike trail that goes from the northern tip of Maine all the way down to Key West. Talk about a bike ride. I also wonder if the new bike trail will connect to the Loveland bike trail that runs along the Little Miami.

My hometown PORTSMOUTH
Jeff, u hit the nail on the head with the description of P-town. My family actually attends the big old church you discussed and I grew up in the small mill town of New Boston. I'm going back this weekend so I'm hoping I can find some time to take some more pics of the other small towns nearby. Maybe some Ironton and Chillicothe? I'd also like to see that book of Portsmouth architecture MU made someday.

My hometown PORTSMOUTH
thought i'd post some pics of my hometown. yeah it looks like a little shit hole but we have alot of history there, and as much as i love cincinnati my heart is still in portsmouth. just a little monument dedicated to all our veterans the building in the middle use to be my grandfathers meet store. damn i wish he still owned that place. same block just across the street old washington hotel. now a retirement home. lucky old people. these next few pics are from our flood wall murals. they really are a work of art and stretch for over 1500 ft. if your ever in p-town you should definately check them out my little bro in the pic i've spent many a nights cruising up and down this street the souther ohio art museum the old columbia theater. it was the last theater that was owner by columbia pictures. it closed in the mid 70's and now is being restored to a music hall. the Mohr Family Housing. dorm projects on the campus of shawnee state university. named appropriately after my family some shots of the shawnee state university campus the once pride of Portsmouth. why did they have to move? and last but not least a view of the enormous portsmouth skyline

Cincinnati: OTR: Gateway Condos/Kroger Garage
well it appears the construction is now underway for the kroger garage/condos. the last time i was down there(last week)the fences around the perimiter were going up. it actually looks like this thing is finally goin to happen. anyway i just thought that i would post a couple of the other garage designs that were not choosen that i promised to show earlier. current site of where the garage will be located some of the propsed garage/mixed use structures this one was my favorite design and i really wish the city would have choosen this one. it seems to really fit the urban fabric of OTR, unlike the final design, but hay thats politics. and the final design to be built there

Cincinnati: OTR: Gateway Condos/Kroger Garage
iRhine.com has an article about the Kroger Garage and a picture of the garage that was chosen to be built. http://www.irhine.com/index.jsp?page=home_kroger020804 I for one hope that they do not use this design for the Kroger garage. The Vine Street and Central Parkway corner is a gateway for OTR. They need a building that is going to attract people there. The current proposal would look nice on Biscayne Bay in Miami, where the designers are from, but we need something that fits in with the historic urban fabric of OTR. I have pictures of the other two proposed garages, that are from local designers, but I'm stupid and have yet to figure out how to post pictures.
