I'm always so amused at what you think life is like for young people in 2023. It might not be possible to be more out of touch. News alert: Young people still like to drink cheap beer and you can go to any college or twenty something bar and see them drinking lots of it.

It would be really dumb to say "we want this money designed to help projects get off the ground but even if we don't get it we're good." You have to pretend that you can't make the project happen any other way.

Convention Center hotels are rarely viable on their own. They almost always need subsidy.

I think this overlooks the fact that there are very few Rs left in the city. It makes no sense to build an ad campaign around appealing to 10% of the electorate. Also, I'd reject that Rs necessarily hate Aftab. He's popular with several Rs I've talked to. I hear progressives complain about him more.

Point of clarification, the S in NS is for the Southern Railway, which was another rail corporation that merged with Norfolk and Western. It is not for the Cincinnati Southern.

I think the key here is that: 1. 5.5% is extremely conservative. The S&P 500 has returned more like 10% over the long run. And... 2. The current inflation of 3.7% is much higher than the long run average. There's no reason to believe it will be higher on average. In reality, in most years it'll be more like 2%.

To be clear, there is nothing in the language that would stop the city from using the money to maintain or expand the streetcar. Rehabbing city streets could very well include adding bike lanes, bus only lanes, or even streetcar tracks. The money would be used for the exact purposes that the current railroad fund is used for, and that is to maintain city-owned infrastructure. Nothing about that would change.

Berding is Chair of the Visit Cincy board and has been one of the biggest advocates for the new convention center. I don't think he'd be interested in throwing any sand into those gears. Also, jabbing 3CDC would not be in his interest at all. Their board is made up of people he needs to maintain good relationships with.
