  1. Yea, I think UC students are moving around more than in the past, and it's directly attributable to Uber/Lyft. I live downtown and have several grad students in my building, not sure about undergrads though. But I've spent a decent amount of time in Shadyside and it has a very similar vibe to OTR. I don't see why those retailers wouldn't want to locate in OTR.
  2. That could seriously backfire. I wouldn't consider it outside the realm of possibility that the Democrats would pick up 5 or even 6 of the 6 Senate seats between the three Californias. Yea, if you click through to the actual study you see that Hillary would've won all three Californias. Northern California and California would be the most Democratic states in the country. Southern California would be a battleground state but still lean Dem (and getting more Democratic every day).
  3. Why wouldn't an Apple Store work in OTR? There's enough foot traffic (and soon way more business employees, because of the new 3cdc offices) in otr to have an apple store be successful. If it works for Pittsburgh in Shadyside, I don't see why it wouldn't work in OTR...
  4. Lucky for Cordray, Brown will also be on the ballot.
  5. Anecdotally, this rings true. My family members who are the most fervent Trumpers also have multiple bankruptcies.
  6. DEPACincy replied to a post in a topic in Ohio Politics
True. I'm just surprised at the 53 figure. Brown "only" won in 2012 51-45 and he won over DeWine in 2006 56-44. At a time when the state went Republican the most it has since 1988 it's still a bit surprising if Brown wins in the 15-16 point range, which would be his career high for a statewide election, save for the 1986 Ohio Secretary of State election he won by 20%. The fact that there are people out there that consistently vote for Portman and Brown is insane to me. What are they basing their vote on? It tells me they know zero about public policy.
  7. It is absolutely true that we did not hear much about normal folks losing their shirts in those bankruptcies but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I spend a decent amount of time in Atlantic City. Go there and talk to locals about the effect Trump had on that town. Lots of regular folks in that town lost their shirts because of Trump's actions.
  8. I would really like to see all those lots along Culvert and Eggleston get developed. Other cities have taken these areas that are blighted with overpasses and turned the overpasses into unique features that really give the neighborhood a different feel. I'm thinking Dumbo, Brooklyn or Old City, Philly. Here is a before and after in Philly: They should demolish the Gilbert Ave. overpasses though, and replace it with a roundabout intersection for Gilbert, Eggleston and 8th (Reedy) streets. and so now you want to demolish overpasses and streets... what is that word people use to describe a woman who can't make up her mind? I think you'll have to elaborate. Did I miss something?

Oh absolutely agree with that.
  10. Kentucky does better than Ohio when it comes to school district structure but they don't fund their schools adequately either. Ultimately, we need to get away from property taxes as a primary funding source and move towards state funding of schools.
  11. But that's an Ohio problem. Other states have county schools that aren't dependent on each different street having rich people and no poors. They also don't have townships or any of these other tiny fiefdoms that the Right loves. Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Look at Maryland public schools. County school districts. They consistently rank high for K-12 education. Or Massachusetts. They consistently rank first. They used to be middle of the pack until they completely reformed their system to pump state dollars into low-income school districts. It's not rocket science. We don't need more charter schools. We need to emulate what liberal states have done, because it's been proven to work.

  13. relax. this is based on MSAs. There's nothing we can do to change it. Dallas and Ft Worth merged their MSAs; they decided bigger numbers and regional marketing would benefit both cities more than going it alone. I don't see why we couldn't reasonably have a Cleveland-Akron MSA. Including Canton might be an economic 'bridge-too-far', based on Census Bureau definitions. They didn't decide to merge. The federal government has a standard definition they use. Dallas and Ft. Worth grew together.
  14. Warby Parker will open at 1419 Vine St. later this year. Where are you seeing this? Would love to be in the retail know. Anything else coming? Apparently there is a coming soon sign on the door.
  15. I hear people complain with some regularity that Rhinegeist's beer sucks. Because it does. I still don't get why the logo is so popular. It looked like a Klansman when they came up with it and it still does. Way to express your opinion as fact, as usual. I only see people on the internet saying Rhinegeist sucks. Nobody I actually know dislikes it. Most of their beers are hoppy but that's what people like. That's certainly what I like.
  16. Anecdotally, Rhinegeist seems to be one of the most popular beers in the state. You can go to Columbus, Cleveland, Athens, Kent, Akron, etc. and find it on tap everywhere and people rave about it. I only see them getting bigger.
  17. Clifton Heights seems just fine to me. We have Walnut Hills and East Walnut Hills. Multiple Price Hills. In Philly, there is Passyunk Square and East Passyunk Crossing and also Kensington, East Kensington, Olde Kensington, and West Kensington--but people often just say Kensington to refer to the hole area plus a couple of other neighborhoods nearby so that really seems analogous.
  18. The thing about those four is that they anchor a neighborhood AND have a broad distribution. That's diversification at its finest.

  20. Another residential parking permit program is being proposed for the West End as part of the FCC stadium deal. So we will have at least four urban neighborhoods in this city where residents get to enjoy on-street parking permits. Meanwhile the OTR residential parking plan was passed by City Council twice and vetoed by the Mayor both times. How much do residential permits cost? Related, if the city is looking for a funding stream they should tax all surface lot revenue at 25%. That'll push more people to use street parking or switch to other modes, and it'll push lot owners to consider redeveloping their space into something more useful.
  21. Not saying you're wrong, but do you see drugs/money actually being exchanged? I've never encountered that kind of out in the open drug dealing in OTR. I used to see that in parts of North Philly, but not here.
  22. Yea, it's a horrible take. I live south of Central Parkway but spend a lot of time in OTR. The place she describes is not OTR. Maybe 15 years ago, but not in 2018. My girlfriend has never been accosted in the way she claims. Certainly, homeless folks ask us for money, but neither of us have ever felt threatened. My friend and his wife own a condo in OTR and they have had nothing but good experiences. I have only ever experienced what I thought was a drug deal once, but I'm not even 100% sure that's what I saw. Bottom Line: She hates cities and people who aren't like her. She's also a gun nut, judging by her other Insta posts.
  23. Worked there during a winter break from college. Can confirm, it is hell.
  24. Yea that makes sense. With the rail I would like it. Too bad we'll never have the opportunity. Rail from CVG to downtown and between the 3C's should be on the agenda though, if our state wasn't so backwards.
  25. While I like the idea, an airport near Jeffersonville would be an hour and a half from downtown Cincinnati. That's quite a ways, and I'm glad I don't have to drive that far to get to the airport.
