  1. Just a guess, but those big cranes are generally used as pile drivers or as a vibratory pile extractor when they aren't lifting stuff around. I thought I read in this thread they had approval for infrastructure work.

Old Brooklyn got a 62 out of 100 for a "somewhat walkable neighborhood" I would probably agree with that assessment. They did have me walking an extra mile to go to "Jeremiah's Food Mart"? instead of the Giant Eagle a half mile from my house that is technically in Brooklyn...

I am in...I can do whatever day or time...
  4. Nice pictures...Good representation of beautiful O.B.
  5. I commute to the suburbs for work...The cross commute is pretty easy...Like another poster pointed out the 480/77 interchange and Rockside Road exit gets a little hairy around rush hour, but it isn't to bad...Though 480 East is where a lot of the westsiders come in from so technically that stretch I wouldn't call a cross commute... I know it's not as walkable as the other neighborhoods, but Old Brooklyn has a 480 exit / 176 exit, very convenient and centrally located to everything, very safe and a lot of nice affordable houses... Tremont has a 490 interchange that can get you on 77 and 480 pretty quick as well...
  6. I work for NRHS...This project was supposed to help the schools out tremendously and save the district from putting the current levy up (hence the sale of the Abby road property to make way for this)...Ah well... I don't think you can do much with downtown NR...It is just a mess of buildings (with crazy setbacks and such) no real plan to any of it...The only good thing they have done was demo that old century 21 building on the corner of 82 and ridge...
  7. From what I have heard most of the town center business plan was fabricated by the previous Mayor Luks...When the new mayor had taken office they found there was no businesses that committed or even showed interest in the project...Hence why this project is dead...For the record I am glad it is...Even though NR needs to rethink their downtown, there is to much retail around the city as is now (Strongsville, Parma, BRUNSWICK)... http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/07/north_royalton_rethinking_down.html EDITED DUE TO COPYRIGHT POLICIES
  8. I may be taking this out of context, but name one thing the teachers union has won in Ohio in the past 5 years... OEA has fought for school funding change...That hasn't happened...We even present several alternative ideas to Columbus... My fees to renew my license went from 45 dollars every 5 years to 350 dollars every 5 years... Or how about my coaching pay check is taxed at 45 percent... Or how about to get rid of the OGT (for the record I think it is a good idea)... People like to blame the teachers union, but the facts are the facts...Minus a strike here or there, they really have no power at all and haven't even protected their own members... For the record a lot of the things the union gets blamed for are the legislators fault...And for the "they protect lazy teachers" argument, It isn't easy to fire a teacher, but it isn't hard either...It just requires documentation, which I believe is important, otherwise any kid that complains a teacher is "bad" because they are "hard" would get fired...That is a far worse scenario than what is in place now...AND you can fire a tenure teacher, again all it requires is documentation, I have seen it happen a couple of times in my teaching experience...It is on the administration to do their job...
  9. Has anyone seen the Lebron vitaminwater drink commercial where is he is a lawyer? There is a scene outside the "courthouse" that looks like it is filmed in front of the old court house on Lakeside...Anyone else see this or am I crazy?
  10. Take an average per region (divide the state up)...It makes the current system (which isn't going to be fixed) more equitable and less dependent on local property taxes... Nope, not exclusively, but it is part of the problem...There is no such thing as a "special education" magnet...There are schools with high special education (sped), for example, Springfield schools in the Cleveland/Akron metro area has the highest population of sped students at 12 percent and there per pupil spending is much higher than any of the accompanying school districts...It is expensive to hire teachers for 5-8 students and still have them use the generally ed teachers as well...Check the numbers, sped = higher costs of money for districts...This are just my ideas of curbing spending in schools for the tax payers...For what it is worth I am a teacher....
  11. Repeal H.B. 920, This lets schools cost increase with property values without going back to the voters, schools spend millions trying to pass / renew levies... Figure out what it costs to educate a student in Ohio and pay that, not pay all the bills and divide what is left over by the number of students and pay schools that number...This is why school funding is illegal, because individual communities have to make up that cost and it is unfair because some communities can provide the money and other cannot... Reform ligation against schools, it costs schools millions upon millions a year on frivolous law suits... Reform special education in schools, it is by far one of the most expensive part of a schools budget (this has more to do with NCLB, but a lot can be done on the state level) Have districts merge purchasing with other districts and buy in bulk... Make students take the bus, transportation costs are another large portion of the schools budget...If they have to provide it, then make the students use it...Buses at the higher levels are generally near empty when running their routs... The higher cost in urban districts is due to the larger population of "special education" students and the higher need for remedial education...It is just like rehabbing a building...The worse condition it is in, the more little things you need to do to modernize it...

I was a Delta Chi at Kent State... O, I had a lot of great times at that place...Overall it was pretty good and positive experience...I meet a lot of my good friends there...
  15. Union vs. Non-Union generally doesn't mean much outside of Ohio / the north...Though problem here is that to receive the training to be a "quality worker" you almost always exclusively have to go through the union's apprenticeship program (which are very good for the record)...There are other adult ed / evening classes you can take, but those are generally for retooling than educating from scratch... Do I think it makes a difference? I think that you always get a better quality of craftsmanship from union workers, though it is generally more expensive and adds a little time to the project (That is mostly do to over-regulation and the giant amount of guidelines they have to follow, not because they are lazy or slow)...Problem with you trade workers, much like the steel and auto industry, is that they are pricing themselves out of the market...It is nice to have the best, but that isn't always feasible... A lot of the union v. non-union rhetoric comes from that competition...We have better training so we deserve higher wages / They are lazy and take longer to complete projects....Like any profession you have your good and bad... For the record, I hate that stupid rat and it never made any sense to me...Protesting is one thing, name calling is another...
  16. That just is not true...I have spent a lot of time going in and out of foreclosed and abandoned homes in the worst of the worst areas of Cleveland and I am about as white as the come...In 4 years I have never been harassed, mugged or even had anything stolen out of my truck (which has A LOT of tools in it)...Usually I get, "are you guys looking for workers"... Even though I have never done ANY research into this, I would bet 85% of murder's and violent crimes are either domestically or drug related (But that probably is true for most cities) in those hoods...If you're not looking for trouble, trouble won't find you...
  17. The lot that is bound by Frankfort and W3rd right? Edit: Thanks mayday & MTS
  18. Does anyone have a picture of the lot in question? I always get the PS lot confused with the ones that are technically in the warehouse district...

I went by and under the bridge the other day and I think it's progressing quite quickly...All the bridges main supports are up (and massive), the entry ramps on both sides are complete and they have about ¼ of the arches up...I don't think you could move any faster... I did have a chance a couple of weeks ago to talk with one of the architects who designed the bridge and he said that it is on schedule for the Nov. 09 completion date...
  20. Good set... :-D

This might not be the best place for this, but I thought it was just a little to off topic for anywhere else... Anyway, I moved to Cleveland 3 years ago from out of state and with all the talk of the redevelopment of the flats and the stories from "its heyday". I was wondering if anyone has any old pictures of the parties and "insanity" of the flats back in the 80's and early 90's...Google has been no help...
