  1. Good idea, but probably won't happen. There are to many barriers to opening a charter school in this state. The biggest being that you have to be an existing manager or sponsor of a current charter school to get a license to operate. There is pretty much 3-4 operaters of charter schools around here (lighthouse, whitehat, the one that operates success tech, and a forth I cannot remember for the life of me). Just another barrier to a quality education in the city.

Well, board you swayed me. I think I have decided against the iPad. After much reading I have come to the conclusion that the iPad is a E-reader first, internet device a very very distant second. :-( I do like the looks of MSI's new tablet, I it runs android and same price point I will be interested to see how that system feels on a larger scale: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/msi-shows-off-10-inch-android-tablet-running-new-tegra-chipset/ Android is an interesting OS. For what it is worth I think WebOS is a better system, minus not having widgets. I think there is going to be a run of tablets on to the market and I am kind of glad about that. They are cool devices. I think laptops are going to more or less replace desktops (minus gamers and hardcore users) and tablets will become the portable device for most people.

It will have flash: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/27/AR2010012704222.html See my problem with netbooks is that why not just use my laptop. A smaller version of a laptop is pointless to me. Again, I think the ipad is aimed at one specific use. Those people that just want to play on the internet. The HP slate is nice, but it will be 700-800 dollars. If it was cheaper, they would have said so by now, but I hope I am wrong. My biggest complaint with tablets so far has been the interface. I love windows 7 and all, but it is not user friendly without a mouse of some sort. This is just an easy interface, iphone like or not.

I am not a mac person by any means. Blame it on bias, performance, stupid commercials, whatever, I just flat out do not like them, PERIOD. I will never buy any of there desktops or notebooks. I heart how windows/linux is set up, to me it is common sense, easy to use, and completely customizable. With that being said, I think I am going to buy one of these. It is kind of perfect as that in between piece of tech. I am never going to use this to type papers or do hard core work on, that is what my laptop/desktop is for. I am not going to carry it everywhere, because that is what my pre is for. By the way, LOOOOVE the palm pre. Though, this is perfect for sitting on the couch and surfing the web (which I loooove to do) and doing simple interweb things. Also, to me reading paper books hurts my eyes, I find it waaaay easier to read a screen. I also want something light and small, not concerned with USB connection or anything else. I think it is pretty cool, even though it is a big iphone. The only other tablet I like out is the IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook: http://www.slashgear.com/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-notebooktablet-hands-on-0567892/ Great concept, but seems more like a replacement laptop and starts at around $1,000. To high of a price for me. The ipad at 499.99 is what is selling me and why it can function as in between tech. Sure there are a lot of negatives like no multitasking, but you can jailbreak the touch, and I assume you will be able to on the ipad as well. I will probably be one of the nerds lined up waiting for the doors to open.
  5. 30 rock made a little jab at Cleveland's RRHOF in last night episode "winter madness". In case anyone is curious, here is the full episode: http://www.nbc.com/30-rock/video/episodes/#vid=1195631/?__source=recent-eps-module
  6. From an email I received about a public meeting on this site in regards for use with the towpath: Harshaw Chemical Site Update Background: From 1944 to 1959, the former Harshaw Chemical Company was contracted by the Manhattan Engineering District (MED) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to produce uranium for isotopic separation and enrichment in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Earlier operations at this site included the manufacture of acetone, hydro-fluoric acid, sodium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, and nickel and cobalt salts. Current plans to extend the Towpath Trail north from its current terminus at lower Harvard Avenue involve this property. The Army Corps of Engineers completed a Preliminary Assessment of the site in 2001, which concluded that although there was no imminent threat to human health or the environment additional investigations to determine the extent of contamination were warranted. A Historic Photographic Analysis Report and a Remedial Investigation (RI) Report were completed in 2006. The Corps identified the presence of another radioactive element (Thorium) and obtained additional historical documents which indicated other MED/AEC processes may have taken place at the site. Additional investigations were performed. The 2006 RI Report was revised in 2009 to include the additional data collected to define the nature and extent and risk posed by the radionuclides not included in the original RI Report. The Corps of Engineers is now entering the Feasibility Study Phase of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act process to identify and evaluate potential remedial alternatives to eliminate risks to human health and the environment appropriate for the future land use of the site. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has completed the revised Remedial Investigation (RI) Report for the former Harshaw Chemical Company Site in Cleveland, Ohio. The RI Report is now being released to the public and the Corps will be hosting a public information session in Cleveland from 7 to 9 pm on January 20th to summarize the findings of the remedial investigation. 7. Anything happening here? Anyone know the process/time line this has to go through?
  8. Thanks for the info, good post KJP...
  9. From what I understand a "gentleman", MAHDI AND ASSOCIATES LTD, bought it with the hopes to turn it into a residence in 05. Though apparently they/he was involved in a mortgage scam and the house went back into foreclosure, from there I am unsure as it what is going on with it now. It is listed as being owned by DONSHIRS DEVELOPEMENT CORP, I have been unable to find any info about them. From the looks of it, the gentleman committing fraud, Mahdi, has turned over deeds to numerous properties to this company. Anyone know anything about DDC? Also the warehouse is on Carnegie, not Euclid. Good catch...
  10. I have been on search for interesting structures for sale in Cleveland. This property is going through foreclosure. The previous owner bought it for 115,000 in 05. He defaulted on it around 08 after some mishaps with mortgage fraud, now it is back in foreclosure. History: The Warner and Swasey Observatory is the astronomical observatory of Case Western Reserve University. Named after Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey, who were precision equipment manufactures and owned the BIG abandoned warehouse near the Cleveland Clinic. They built it at the beginning of the 20th century, and gifted it to Case. It was used up until 85 when it was abandoned, because of light pollution, and has been empty since. It is located on Taylor Road on the Cleveland/East Cleveland boarder. Not my thread, but a lot of neat pics from inside the Warner Swasey Company on Euclid Carnegie Ave: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,21538.0.html Floor plans of the building: http://www.flipline.com/wso/floorplans.html Minus a lot of broken windows, the opening is also open to the elements. I think the dome would make a great library :-)
  11. Isn't there another company that could run the medical mart? There are other competing cities, so someone also does this. If it is such a good idea, someone has to jump on it.
  12. Well I started a webpage detailing the project and other similar projects I have done. I wouldn't mind some "constructive" criticism from the UO community. It is still very under construction. Be nice... www.clevewind.com
  13. Just software for creating a website on my computer then uploading it. I haven't created a website in a loooong time. I am just looking for something basic, I don't want to do anything fancy.
  14. Just like the title says. I am trying to get back into web editing (just as a hobby) and wanted to know if anyone has any experience or recommendations for a good free or reallllllllly cheap web editor. Thanks
  15. They are starting to produce power tomorrow at the Pearl Rd junk yard. Cannot wait to see that thing spinning. Wind turbine to start producing energy from Pearl Road Auto Parts in Cleveland Pearl Road Auto Parts began recycling junked cars 82 years ago. Today the fourth-generation family-owned business in Cleveland expects to begin "recycling" wind into electricity. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2009/11/wind_turbine_to_start_producin.html
  16. :? Is there even another medical mart developer out there? I am starting to loose faith in MMPI and their ability to make this project move forward... Med mart change stuns city, which must OK new location Proposed for the northern edge of downtown's Mall C, the design is the best alternative for a $425 million convention center complex, said developer MMPI, which last week abandoned plans to incorporate historic Public Auditorium into the project. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/med_mart_change_stuns_city_whi.html

I am in Old Brooklyn, on the west side. Jillan's is a great idea, I'm going to give them a call later.
  18. I am looking for a bar in the greater Cleveland area that would or might show the upcoming Cotto fight. I have called a couple of places, but no luck. Any ideas?
  19. Welcome to the neighborhood. I live over by Rhodes. Mind if I ask what you bought? Good pics...
  20. I am very confused by 5/6. I feel that the current system isn't that bad, just some of the people in it are. CD is there any negative to voting down both of these proposals?
  21. I think the owner your thinking of sold the place a couple months back. They had a "change in management" sign up for a month or two right around the time they from being open 24/7 to regular restaurant hours. Either way it is very sad to see that place closed
  22. Also, the "pearl wind" turbine is up, but not running yet at the corner of Pearl & Fulton. It is pretty neat looking. I am going to try and take a picture of it today.
  23. The expressway diner in OB is officially closed. Word is the owners stopped paying their bills... Sad to see, it was one of my favorite places to eat. I hope someone else buys it and reopens it...
  24. Thanks! Yep, runs my garage door opener. I don't have a way, yet, to monitor actual electricity produced.
  25. :) That's me, it's already up, there is a thread about on UO...The zoning board did approve it this morning... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,19258.0.html
