Cleveland: Population Trends
I have spent a good deal of time on this subject and I am sure you all know it is a complex one. It is hard to value education when you have boarded and abandoned houses and businesses on every street. They know they are in the hood. It is a very survivalist mentality. Kind of the "better enjoy today because you won't have it tomorrow" way of thinking. There is no highly educated people to set an example, the schools are looked as the enemy now because of how the rules are enforced and insane way of thinking that education in these neighborhoods should be the same as the suburbs. Why would you look to education? It is a long process and takes many, many years to pay off and so and so is selling and has a BMW, which should I do? People have to survive today and in most cases that is what it comes down to. The best way I have ever seen this explained was by South Park in the "Wheel of Fortune" episode that deals with the "n" word and racism. The point of the episode is you cannot get it as outsider. You can understand it, but you cannot get it. It's just a different game in a lot of these poorer neighborhoods. Along the same lines a lot (and I mean most) of the kids running these neighborhoods are good kids, there is just no long term thinking without education. That is why "respect" is so important, you have to protect the things you do have. My very condensed answer is to change the way education is done in Cleveland (for example). All schools should be on a full year schedule. If they are behind they have to work to catch up. Give them 2 weeks off in between quarters, whatever. Have more of a focus on employable skills (being a nurse, working in a bank...) instead of photosynthesis. Start early too. Tons of small Head Start type of programs from 2 and up for free that are mandatory that have an educational focus. If it is free and easy to get to, people will use it. I also think you have to give kids an option, so at 16 kids get a choice, you can either continue your education and finish high school or 2 years service in a "public works" project (digging ditches, cleaning roads...). At least the kids are gaining skills either way. If they do neither, they cannot qualify for public assistance in the future.

Road Biking in Cleveland?
I agree with CD...Biking around the Cleveland area is extremely friendly and there a lot of individual bicyclers, just not a lot of groups to ride with. Like the map as well ExSpectator36, good find. How much are you looking to spend?

Cleveland - Abandoned and active rail
Nice set... The "subway" goes beneath the Veterans Memorial bridge. The flooded platform is located around the back end of Stonebridge. It really is a very well thought out station, I hope one day it will be utilized again. There is another stop further south on Ohio City at the corner of W25/Detroit. You can see the old leaded glass "subway" sign in the Massimo De Milano building.

DIY Micro Turbines
I have more than a sterling relationship with my neighbors (for the record, I asked each neighbor within 3 houses in each direction if it is ok and they all looooved the idea)...

DIY Micro Turbines
Currently Cleveland doesn't have any "zoning" laws for turbines, but they are going through the process right now. Currently my height restriction I believe is 25ft, but I think I am going for 30 anyway. The tower is going down 3.5 feet and won't need any guy-wires. I am going to call Monday and figure it out. Though I am pretty sure with enough persistence I will get it through legally. Anyone want to translate the code for me? :?

DIY Micro Turbines
So I decided to document this project from start to finish here. So this is the first step, my new new 35 ft tower for the turbine. The goal is to run my garage "off grid" for under $800.00 dollars. Part 1. The tower. This was donated to me by a friend. Free 35 ft tower = awesome Another view of the final resting place for the tower. She will sit around 30ft when I am all said and done. Step 1 is going to strip and paint this tower brown (least obtrusive color). Step 2 dig a hole 3ft down and cement it in. Shot of the yard and roughly were the tower will set. Notice how looooong that thing is. I plan on painting it brown and setting as close to the property line as I can to blend in the surroundings. I think that minus the actually turbine it will be hard to see the tower. Here is the tower at 20ft, minus 1 10ft section.

Ohio: Residency Rule Requirement
Eh, this is a sad day not only in Cleveland, but in government. As stated numerous times in this thread the citizens voted on this. It was something we valued as a community and it has been taken away. Unfortunately I think the people that wanted to leave probably left a long time ago, I doubt it is going to have a big impact on Cleveland. I hate when people circumvent rules and laws like this one. This case, to me, represents everything that is wrong in our country.

DIY Micro Turbines
I have seen VAWT before and I think they have better urban applications than wind turbines. The problem now is that 1. they are more expensive than traditional turbines 2. less efficient at this point on a smaller scale. I think in 2-5 years they will be viable, but it just isn't there right now. Another intersting concept is the "wind belt" It uses ossolation to produce current instead of spinning a turbine. Pretty neat concept. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4224763.html Either way, I think a micro wind turbine is really my only option right now

DIY Micro Turbines
Update: I think instead of building I am going with a pre-built one. Mainly because it comes with a charge control and that plus a turbine for under $500.00 seems like a good deal. I am worried about the "high" start up wind speed at 5mph, but my house seems to get a steady 5-9 30ft up. Anyway, this is the unit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170320175347 I "think" I have someone donating a 30ft tower to me. All I have left to buy is a deep cycle battery and a power inverter and I think that is all for the big stuff. I figure about 800.00 for everything. I estimate that my garage averages about a .1-.2 kilowatt hour's per day. So, if this thing puts out 100W (which is the more likely power output), then I should be able to keep the battery charged for whatever I need to do. When it is all said and done and it stands the test of time it will take roughly 14 years to pay for itself, though like I said before this is more of a science experience than trying to get off the grid. On a side note, does anyone have any experience with ARI wind turbine? There isn't much on the net formally about them, but from what I can tell they put together a decent cheap micro turbine.

DIY Micro Turbines
So my latest idea is to build a micro turbine. In all actuality they are pretty easy and cheap to make. I expect when my project is all said and done it will have cost me around 400-500 for everything (tower, batteries, wiring). I know I am not going to produce enough electricity to run my house, but I want to use it to run my garage (a couple of lights and a garage door - estimate of 400-500W). This is more of a "vanity" project and I more interested in learning the concepts to apply later down the road than anything else. Also, I am in the process of rewiring my house and will be installing a new box in the garage, so switching between (wind and grid) will be relatively easy. My question is this, does anyone have any experience with this type of project or tried anything like this before?

My Cleveland Rehab
My idea behind this project was that in Cleveland if enough people buffered rain water during heavy storms we wouldn't have sewage overflow into the lake. Anyway this was my first attempt at an urban rain barrel. Cost a total of $30 w/barrel to build 1. The next will probably cost me half of that because of extra supplies. I am going to paint it to match the house sometime in the near future. Anyone else do this?

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
I am pretty sure that already happens and I would be happy that they are targeting "at risk" areas of the city. Remember, A rising tide lifts all ships... Tension yes, but it was accomplished. The citizens did overwhelming vote for it. Though Cleveland made it seem more like a power play than a consolidation.

Kent, Ohio - Part 1
That's my old fraternity house. I graduated from Kent and I grew up in Western PA (Ambridge). Most of the people I know that went to Kent were from W.PA. and Akron/Canton area. Good school, but the social scene was far better than the academics.

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
Well here is the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI) study. The W25 corridor is a major through way on the West Side and definitely needs an upgrade. Lots of potential! Ohio City Queen-Barber - I have never personally heard that this hood had a formal name or even a business district. There is an I-90 ramp. Clark-Metro Metro Health Brooklyn-Centre Old Brooklyn Dedicated bike lane AND demo of the horrible dollar store on the corner for mixed use. No new RTA and expanded stations though, this is a major area for people catching the bus and constantly has people sitting on the steps of US bank. Old Brooklyn specific projects in conjunction with the TLCI study Wild Life Way (thee zoo road) realignment and expansion of a small neighborhood park Another area for redevelopment is the Old Brooklyn “triangle” Currently a branch of the Cleveland library, various small business and the HUGE vacant RTA Westside bus garage. Another Old Brooklyn commercial district along pearl Brookpark Rd Retail District - Also currently this plaze is going to be remolded
