  1. Overall I wasn't overall impressed with the speech, but some of his ideas were interesting, particularly on education. I like the idea of shifting focus from OGT to ACT. Should save the state a lot of money in testing. I doubt they will get the school year extension passed. I personally would like to see a full year schedule implemented. http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/ohiopolitics/entries/2009/01/28/strickland_unveils_sweeping_ch.html
  2. Concept is interesting... http://www.freep.com/article/20090113/MULTI/90113001/1007
  3. I thought a little good news would be nice. http://realtrends.com/go/view_media.php?mp_id=7721&cat_id=1263
  4. Do we have a restaurant review thread? I couldn't find one so this seemed like an appropriate place to post this: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2008-12-04-speakeasies_N.htm
  5. There were roughly 90 schools in Ohio that were recognized out of approximately 800 PUBLIC high schools in the state (940 Public and Private for the record). So Cleveland represents roughly 10 percent of all High Schools in the state that received recognition. Pretty good for me.
  6. Like its traditional college rankings, U.S. News & World report now ranks American high schools, judging 1,900 schools. The gold are the top 100 schools in the country, Chagrin Falls High School is the only school from NE Ohio to make it. The following are ALL schools in NE Ohio that received awards for their academics. Notice how many CLEVELAND schools are on that list and how many SUBURBAN schools are missing. Seems like what they are doing is starting to work. Good job CMSD. Silver: Aurora High School, Avon Lake High School, Bay High School, Beachwood High School, Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, Cleveland School of the Arts High School, Highland High School , Hudson High School, Kirtland High School, Revere High School, Rocky River High School, Solon High School, West Geauga High School, Westlake High School Bronze: James Ford Rhodes High School, Jane Addams Business Careers High School, John Marshall High School, Lakewood High School, Lorain Southview Pride High School, Martin Luther King Jr. High School, Max S. Hayes High School, Mayfield High School, North Olmsted High School, SuccessTech Academy School Charter School, Whitney Young High School (PD missed this one), Woodridge High School http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/12/chagrin_falls_high_school_retu.html

  10. I wrote him, did anyone else?
  11. I completely agree. The last several weeks have not been good for Cleveland. Damn

Not that needs to be discussed, but I am almost pretty sure North Royalton got its name in reference to another "Royalton" in southern Ohio. http://www.cleveland.com/northroyalton/index.ssf?/northroyalton/more/sa/northroyalton01.html Also, kind of on this topic that I also find fascinating is how local high schools got their "team" name. For example, The Medina Bee's came about because of the candle factory and wax. Brecksville-Broadview Hts Bee's because both towns start with B's, hence the Bee's and to end with the town I started with, THE North Royalton Bears who used to be the North Royalton Indians, but in the 40-50's a gentleman from the town used to come to the home games in a skinned bear costume to scare the other team, so they changed the name to the Bears. How about that for useless knowledge.

    I am in...
  14. Close, it is a school. North Royalton Middle School
  15. You know one of the largest public geothermic heating buildings in the us is in NE Ohio. Anyone want to guess where it is?
  16. Interesting list...Where is North Royalton? Honestly, Solon is pound for pound one of the best school districts in Ohio, if not the country. Ask any teacher what school district they would want to work for OR send their kids to and Solon is always on that short list. Great sports, facilities, extra curricular's, cost efficient, academics, student population. As a teacher I always impressed by their school system. Truly one of the best. Congrat's Solon... I honestly do not know anything about Chagrin Falls, anyone have any experience with them or any schools on this list?

I think a couple of people might try to bike this Friday for "critical mass" in Lakewood. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,16181.0.html
  18. This is a great thread. I like old terminal tower pictures, does anyone have any close ups of the construction of the top? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYqtmDmfZkk
  19. Hard to stay positive about this one. Huge loss to the city. I bet Beachwood is giving them a nice tax free incentive. Regionalism at its best. F'm Time to add Eaton to the boycott list.
  20. I assume the extra amount of RTA coaches was because the rapid wasn't running. I went down to tailgate for the game and didn't want to drive so I figured I would take a ride into the city. When I was leaving around 7:30 I was told "rather ignorantly" that they were not running and they wouldn't before some time and walked off. I bet there was a lot of people from the burbs that were not happy to hear that. On top of that on my way down a group of about 150 of us waited for an hour because some crazy guy was running on the west bound tracks in TC. Not a good transit day.
  21. Arlington Commons wins BZAP nod Tuesday, August 19, 2008 By KIM TOLLEY, ThisWeek Contributor The Upper Arlington Board of Zoning and Planning unanimously approved a developer's application for the construction of Arlington Commons at its meeting Monday night. For weeks, homeowners have expressed reservations about three structures that include a 2600-square-foot, two-story building. Many said the development would be an eyesore and bring down property values in the area. After abutting property owners complained about the location of dumpsters in the initial plan and potential noise from customers using a patio at a proposed restaurant, the developers relocated the dumpsters closer to the building on Brandon and moved the patio to the front of the building. Metropolitan also changed the design of an eight-foot fence, scaling it down to four feet as it approaches the front end of some residents' homes. The development has also expanded from .68 to 1.06 acres. MORE: http://www.thisweeknews.com/live/content/upperarlington/stories/2008/08/13/arlington_commons.html
  22. So I cannot make it to the meeting next Wednesday, does anyone know what this "open house" entails or who I could contact to get involved? The many different bridges of Cleveland to me is what makes Cleveland so beautiful. I understand why, but it is a shame they have fallen into disrepair. I would hate to see these marvels slowly go the way of the Hulett's. :-(

That has to be the greatest name for a strip club ever. I hope it was decked out in red/white/blue and the girls had to strip to the "top gun" soundtrack.
